I know that they can make it into 3 dozen films as far as I am concerned as long as they are as entertaining as the first part is. Hobbit part 1 was better than at least 95% of all other 2012 releases so more of a good thing is not bad at all when it comes these great and fun films.

[Show spoiler] I was surprised that Bree wasn't in the movie. Also the name Gloin was mispronounced.
The lack of major landmarks along the way was also a surprise to me. Perhaps the biggest surprise was
[Show spoiler] lack of seeing young Aragorn or any one of a number of people and things at Rivendell.

Yeah, way less material added back than ROTK. There was a story the other day confirming the extended version of the first one for later this year, with Jackson saying 20-25 minutes added.

Is Smaug going to be in the second film or is Smaug and final dwarf/elf/people vs orc battle going to all be in third film?

It appears the story of the The Hobbit will end with the second movie, and the 3rd movie will be compiled of the appendixes and lost chapters. I could be wrong. I find it interesting that they are not waiting until the end of 2014 to release the 3rd film, but only waiting until may of 2014 to release it. I wonder if it will be much shorter?

That's not correct. Film 3 will at least contain the Battle of Five Armies. But what's unsure at the moment is whether Smaug will
[Show spoiler]meet his demise
in Film 2 or Film 3.

Are you saying that because the first film appears to end halfway through the book?

First film ended alittle over 1/3 of the book, but at halfway stage.Would be strange if the first two movies run to little under 3 hours, and the last one will be a normal 90min movie...

I really don't think that is going to happen. If the 3rd film clocks in at a mere 2.5 hours, then so be it, but what intruiges me (and i'd be delighted to have opinions from the more Tolkien-knowledgable users here) but the first image from TDoS shows Bilbo on a pile of gold, suggesting that we are going to have events in the second film taken up to 'Inside Information', which is page 196 of my 1975 edition of the book.

And here's the conundrum: Jackson felt very uncomfortable crowbarring the death of Saruman into the start of Return Of The King, so the idea that the
[Show spoiler]death of Smaug
would take place at the start of the third film doesn't really work.

I genuinely think we will have Film 3 feature the
[Show spoiler]Assault on Dol Guldur and the battle of the 5 armies.
That is more than enough for a 2-plus hour epic. Ending film 2 with
[Show spoiler]hordes of Goblins, Orcs etc moving towards the Lonely Mountain after the death of Smaug
would be one hell of a cliffhanger for the 3rd film!

Saw this yesterday on a whim. LOvED it! I was worried because I remember loving the first 3 but have not taken much time to rewatch them because they are so emotionally draining, but after seeng this yesterday I am re-energized to watch the first ones again...I have yet to even put the blurays in my player. Same with Star Wars.

Where could they even cut Smaug between two films? I could imagine Film 2 would be Bilbo talking to Smaug in the mountain and once he runs out of the mountain, they would end the movie with Smaug flying out of the mountain with Bilbo and co. looking up at him in the sky (like at the end of Mortal Kombat when all the characters go into fighting stance when Shao Khan shows up in the clouds). That would suck though and wouldn't make sense. The whole Smaug scene should be one long built-up scene with Bilbo teasing and annoying Smaug in the mountain until he riles him enough to fly out of the mountain and get killed by Bard. Cutting that in half is like tv producers slapping a commercial down right at some huge emotional, intense scene.

That's what i was talking about. I really believe that all of the Smaug action is going to be wrapped up by the end of film 2 so that film 3 can concentrate on the Dol Guldur and Battle of X Armies sequences.

Yea but however.....

in a youtube interview Jackson states that the
[Show spoiler]White Council gets to kick major ass in the second film.

Sooo...that means for the final 3rd film there is NO Dol Guldur but we get to see the Battle of the Five Armies
last about half of the film.

First thing is first, Radagast, you were correct. Thank you, I revisited the local theater Saturday night and watched the HFR version as I THOUGHT I had the first time. Apparently, the one they were showing on the IMAX screen was the 24 fps version, which is why I didn't notice a difference. I just kinda figured it would be the HFR version. I thought it was interesting, but I don't think I would want my home movies to look like that... just give me everything on a 24FPS blu-ray that I love

On another note, since I did go see this again... I enjoyed it much much more. I tried not to think about my issues with the Radagast character in the movie and enjoy everything around it I can't wait to see more now!!!

Now, maybe Grand Bob or Radagast can answer this one for me, or maybe its just a plot hole. But,
[Show spoiler]in LotR, when they show up to Moria, Gimli is incredibly surprised to find that his kinsman are dead, and that orcs run rampant throughout Moria. BUT, in The Hobbit, it says that after Smaug runs the Dwarves out of Erebor, Thror or Thrain, can't remember which, tried to take Moria back from the Orcs? Shouldn't Gimli have KNOWN at the time of the War of the Ring, that Moria was infested with Vile Creatures???
I have a terrible memory for remembering things, which is why I enjoy watching movies over and over :P Is this just a plot hole in the movies or is there a better explanation for that in print? Thanks fellas!

Just saw this yesterday. Very surprised so many people thought this was a 4 or 5 star movie... I thought it was nothing like the first 3.. Very geared toward kids i felt, Dancing and singing in the movie? Corny humor that seemed to ruin scenes that could have held a serious tone... not what i had hoped for.. many things seemed the same from the first movie, just redone here and the story resembled the first LOTR movie very much I felt...

3 stars for me, and thats being generous...

Cate Blanchett, Hugo weaving, Christopher Lee, and Gandalf are all going to be kicking ass?
