With CRTs with their infinite contrast and voltage of course you can set 235 as the reference white level with no detriments and any peaks over.

Setting white specular highlights on video at 235 already gives you about up to a half an f-stop of specular highlight to diffuse highlight headroom the way most films are encoded and at the level their diffuse white points are set on the signal, which is normally about what people expose on most slide film and we don't see people complaining about loss of highlight color on those.
You will get an increase in contrast by setting your white clip point at 235, but most digital displays actually have MORE banding when you set white there as opposed to not clipping.

The newer Panasonic LCD front projectors have a analyzer built in to them where you can do measurements of the video signal on screen. You'll find plenty of above white information (especially in color). Below black as well.

Quote:
Why do the screencaps on the Blu-ray.com site have the black bars at RGB 0,0,0 (eg. Transformers, The Hunt for Red October)? Are the screenshots on blu-ray.com changed/scaled from 16-235 to 0-255? and if so, wouldn't that lose info that was below 16 to start with? If there is info below the reference black (16), then wouldn't you want to make the black bars even darker so that no matter how much I altered the brightness the black bars would always be the blackest thing on the screen so they are as un-noticeable as possible?
They are converted to PC levels by stretching, which causes its own issues. The information below black is not intended for viewing, but it does define a clip point for setting brightness. There are quite a few reasons for having that toe room though.

I posted this in Sir Terrence's thread, but he has not visited in awhile. So I will post here:

This comment is from Joshua Zyber, commenting on DD+ and Lossless:

"They are not technically identical in bit data, obviously. But audibily, if you can submit yourself to a legitimate double-blind listening test under properly controlled circumstances and consistently tell the difference between a DD+ track and a lossless track from the same audio mix, I will give you $100.

My money is safe.

The high-resolution Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution formats are lossy, but use psychoacoustic modeling to remove frequencies beyond the range of human hearing. Do you believe yourself to have better hearing than is physiologically possible for a human being?

DD+ and DTS HR are much more efficient and transparent than traditional DVD quality Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1, which are more highly compressed and remove frequencies within the range of human hearing. There are audible differences between low-res DD 5.1 and the original master. But a high-res DD+ track and the master? Not so much."

Comments?

Yet he wouldn't accept an invitiation to go to Richard Casey's sound-off test.

Come on, we don't need to talk about Josh Zyber here - he is a fool.

psychoacoustic modelling...information is still missing in that, the higher frequencies are compressed far more as they are less likely to be heard, the human ear can be fooled very easily. However those missing frequencies can add air and feeling to a piece

this is a good explanation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoacoustics

its all about fooling someone into thinking there is more than there is.

Zyber continually takes subtle swipes at Blu-ray, so his defending of DD+ is no surprise since so many HD DVDs contained those tracks.

That guy is a complete ass, and his "employment" by Home Theater Mag continues to show their bias towards HD-DVD. Another example of "experts" picking the wrong horse and trying to save face. Someone should ask him about his review of Traffic and those infamous photos of his "home theater".

Funny, a lot of our readers are chiming in that we are covering Blu-ray too much.

DD+ did an outstanding job as an audio format, regardless of the format used. Filmmixer is going to be doing blind controlled testing sometime soon down in LA that should put some naysayers to rest on "perceived" differences.

But honestly, why not just use lossless all the time and be done with it, it would save us all these stupid arguments.

It's too bad since I like HT magazine. I couldn't believe it when they hired Zyber.

Probably former HD DVD supporters.

That's sad.

Except, Filmmixer is going to specifically not save us all these stupid arguments. What's the point of the test if everyone agrees lossless is the way to keep everyone happy?

It's all about perception. People perceive that players should be BD-Live, and wonder why Blu-ray doesn't support deep colour. And, the big challenge facing Blu-ray is seeding the perception that consumers need the extreme-HD that Blu-ray can deliver.

Another camp wants people to perceive that 10Mbps or less video + DD+ downloads are transparent to the associated masters.

Hmmmm.......Ireland is not part of the UK Penton

And I think that's a spoof commercial, I'm sure I read about it in the newspaper a couple of weeks ago, Diageo (who own Guinness) were none too please when they saw it.
