It's sad but that that genuinely means a lot, especially coming from you. What can I say, I'm a sucker for praise from people who actually know what the hell they're talking about.

Was this production really of such notoriety? I had assumed it was a fairly low profile release. I see I got the manufacturer of projector wrong, but in fairness I was using B&H to reference back to those glorious days in school when we'd waste time watching a film on 16mm instead of, you know, lernin.

Again, not knowing -any- of the drama behind this disc, I did feel a bit when watching the "preservation" demonstration like when I saw the Baraka "THIS IS THE BEST TRANSFER IN THE HISTORY OF EVER" extra (ie., why are you selling me on buying the disc after I've already bought it).

Criterion often puts in lovely before/after bits without the same hyperbole, and were certainly my first introduction to the art and science of film restoration.

All this talk of restoration brought me back to the '98 TIFF screening of Touch of Evil - I got a chance to see Janet Leigh there (she looked absolutely radiant), projected at the marvellous (and now demolished) Uptown. I honestly had it in my head that that's where I saw RAH in person, but it seems that Uni, along with Murch and co. did the work themselves.

So hard to keep track...

And in other news today, Taschen has announced a new film-related book that looks pretty awesome: The Godfather Family Album written by Paul Duncan with photos by Steve Schapiro. It's available in a couple different versions - a standard hardcover (SRP $69.99, but just $44 on Amazon) and also a special Deluxe Edition (SRP $1800, but $1400 on Amazon). Taschen sure know how to make great (and EXPENSIVE) film books! I wish I'd had the funds to drop on that amazing Stanley Kubrick book they released last year - Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon: The Greatest Movie Never Made. It sold for $1500 at the time, but it's now out of print and selling for $5000 on Amazon. DAMN. Hey, at least that standard edition of the Godfather book is affordable.

Oh, man, that looks awesome.. but I HAD NO IDEA about the Kubrick Napoleon book! That's just CRAZYPANTS...

P, if you don't own the Kubrick Archives you're missing out... Hell, I got a $130 (unpaid) parking ticket at Strand in NYC picking up my version (there's a cheaper/smaller one available now). My slice of 70mm film is some random bit of slitscan footage from the conclusion, fwiw.

That Godfather book looks purdy... sigh...

If you want something a little more affordable, if you can find one, Fine Molds in Japan released a Millenium Falcon model kit that is literally that. They molded every little geegaw the modelers used to add detail seperately. You get a plastic shell out of the box essentially


It's awesome even if it is $300

Penton, I love the job that Sony has done on bluray but I do have one peeve that they are getting into an annoying habit of doing and I wanted to politely let you know about it.

SPE has a habit of only releasing the first film of a films with sequels that are good, almost as good, or maybe even better than the original. Examples include:

Men in Black, but no MiB II
Ghostbusters -was majorly disappointed that II wasnt released last year as well.
Bad Boys- After The Rock, the 2nd Bad Boys is my fav Michael Bay film.

Not to mention- No Karate Kid 3 on bluray, but I cant say Im too upset with that omission.

Im just failing to see the point of releasing the above films without their sequels.
