Good coaches realize that winning isn't what's it's all about. Helping the kids learn to play as a team, respect each other, and play the game right are what needs to be taught. If they win, then that's a bonus. I would prefer a team that loses with dignity and plays hard than a team that has a bunch of "attitudes" and wins, but that's just me.

PS Penton, I was in Dallas this week and watched the Arsenal match on Fat Tuesday in a Cajun Bar...sadly they didn't look good at all. Barcelona outplayed them virtually the entire match (although I think the penalty kick was total BS).

not as BS as the second yellow for "wasting time" (ONE SECOND!!!)

anyhoo, saw 35mm prints today of QUADROPHENIA and TOMMY - Quad was a rough print, but still a pleasure to see projected. Despite lots of trying, the only print in the world that could be found was in a private collection in Australia - some colour fading/magenta push, but not horrific.

TOMMY was an archive print, and looked and sounded FABULOUS. Just ridiculously amazing, like a brand new film, but with beautifully intact grain, rich colours, and lavish production. The BLU is a treat (save for the utter lack of compelling extras, easily found on the R2 DVD), but to see the film projected on celluloid with the Quintaphonic soundtrack was rockin'

I didn't catch that one! Granted, I was probably distracted by the festivities of Fat Tuesday and the $2 draft beers. Man it was rough waking up the next morning for a 9 hour meeting!

Thanks for expressing your concern. So do I, and for that matter, everyone in Japan. It seems the next worries are with the nuclear reactor, more waves and after-shocks. They're definitely having a tough time of it over there.

It certainly is yet another wake-up call for all us Californians to be as prepared as we can be for the BIG one as I think the earthquake people predict something like a > 90% chance of us being hit HARD within the next 30 years...and we don't have a warning system like Japan.

Well, I wasn’t that disappointed as it is very difficult to control or beat Barcelona when playing in their house.

The upsetting thing is that if memory serves, they could have avoided this confrontation (at least at this stage of the Champion’s League) if they had just won their group.

I haven’t watched the FA Cup yet and probably won’t do so until this evening or maybe even tomorrow so, please no hints from anyone. I just hope at this point, we bring some/any silverware home this year. It hasn't been looking good so far. *In it but not to win it*.

I have the BD for the 2009 race, so that's probably enough for me (especially at their price), but some great scenery in the trailer.
Speaking of which, I just returned from a long mountain bike ride (local). So, the post-exercise adrenalin high is still in effect.

Thanks for the heads-up . I shall make the purchase as it will surely ignite memories from the time I did the race. I keep some number plates as mementos of the more memorable events (see below and to the right of the green Penton sticker). One of the highly anticipated titles on Blu-ray. It apparently has been announced for release in France on June 11, Amazon does not show any release information for the US. If I were a very rich person I would hire an ensemble and do a new recording of the musical score, vocals and sound effects. They would have to be able to duplicate the original in terms of performance . Since I am not a very rich person it is hoped Paramount shows some TLC towards this movie.

Thanks for the information pertaining to film restorations process.

Well, certainly not about Arsenal as I’m beginning to believe someone put a voodoo curse on them this year. However, lest we not totally neglect your passion(s), a caring colleague sent me this link this morning for you to embrace (not one but two! ). Enjoy - http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2011/...-in-one-night/

b.t.w., given the Nordic nature ^ of the broadcast location, if anyone desires a recommendation for fine dining in Copenhagen, might I humbly recommend ‘Noma’. Perhaps, KubrickFan has also been there and can confirm.

You’re welcome . As you’ve knocked my ego up a notch on a morning in which I’m still disheartened over Arsenal getting booted out of the FA Cup competition, allow me to revisit one of your recent past posts. One moment while I search for it….

I think I can safely say, without stepping on anyone’s toes in another dept. that….it is being discussed but it’s not ready yet.

Very cool.

Hopefully it will include patterns that can be used to quantitatively measure crosstalk/ghosting levels in displays and eyewear.

At least they're playing, American football owner and players can't agree how to split 9 billion dollars. Wish I had that problem.

At the basic science level, there is both black as well as white crosstalk/ghosting and even more esoterically, both can even cause color changes (shifting), which is likely unbeknownst to many consumers. It is all rather complex and quite a challenge to distill into an accurate consumer friendly ghosting measuring test chart or ghosting suppression level test chart which a typical home theater owner can use without feeling tremendously overwhelmed by the process. A consumer friendly version is the ideal.

Of course, for the pros out there, spectroradiometer measurements of crosstalk correlate most accurately with perceived ghosting but it’s not like Joe 6Pack has these types of optical sensors at home.

As an aside, on a theatrical exhibition note, RealD is quite prone to ghosting, so much so that it actually needs a special visual effects pass to control it, which in essence, is a ghost suppression pass. It works by evaluating the crossover level and then pre-compensates for that by subtracting from each eye the known pattern of light expected to leak from the other.

P.S.
b.t.w., to those 3D neophytes amongst us who may be a bit confused, for practical posting purposes, JamesN and I have used the term crosstalk/ghosting as being essentially the same thing which is why we have ‘ /ed’ it. Both terms are commonly used synonymously and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.

To be absolutely technically correct, ‘crosstalk’ is a physical thing and can be objectively measured, whereas, on the other hand, ‘ghosting’ is a subjective term and is the perception of leakage (or crosstalk) of one channel’s information into the other channel’s eye….because of the imperfect separation of each channel. Due to the fact that ghosting is asymmetrical, viewers are quite sensitive to it and it can produce significant retinal rivalry and thusly is one cause of 3D viewing annoyance…or, if severe and prolonged enough, actual physical discomfort can be induced. Now I’m all ghosted out, so please no ghosting questions for awhile.

So, in summary, as with a human’s urinary bladder, leakage likewise aint good for 3D displays either.

I've read about their process, which I believe they call ghostbusting. SPHE should sue.

Hi Penton, as above but in advance.
I read the question and answer with Grover concerning Taxi Driver and I don’t understand something at all. Grovers says and I quote “By process, I mean a full 4K workflow with no downrezing. Especially scanning at 4K, it preserves the essential resolution of the 35mm negative. The resulting HD master used for the Blu-ray authoring was derived directly from the final 4K files.” That answer makes no sense to me. When you go from 4K to HD (1920x1080) that in fact is downrezing and he says “no downrezing”. I don’t want to sound beligerent but what does he mean exactly or was he misquoted? Also he says and I quote “There were enormous scratches running through some scenes that were difficult to remove. It almost never fails that when a film is scratched, it is right down the middle of a character's face - never way over to the side of the frame as you would hope. So, those kinds of things are difficult to achieve without altering the underlying structure of the emulsion. This film had several things like that wrong with it. Thousands of instances of minus density dirt specs were embedded in the emulsion of the negative, some of which can be removed easily and most not.” My question to you is what specific tool did they use to fix all these scratches and is it something that someone like I can buy or is it some kind of Sony proprietary tool?

Thanks again, Eugene.

I'm not Penton Man, but it simply means that the entire restoration was done in 4K, instead of scanning the movie, and then down-rezzing it to perform the restoration in 2K. So the final master exists in 4K, instead of 2K. That a Blu-ray has a lower resolution, is besides the point.

Correcto-mundo and Thanks.
I’ll just elaborate a little more in case our new member has further questions as to its significance, etc.
