Well according to governor Newsom, everything regarding reopenings is going to be controlled to the point that a certain level of infections will be allowed, but above that, things will get more restrictive again. It's going to be a back and forth between economy and cases. There will be social distancing and many other mitigation measures in place until herd immunity is achieved.

It's not like there's going to be capacity crowds at Chase center for a Warriors game this year, or a 30,000 field international marathon with another 10,000 volunteers. Or even (hopefully) packed churches or casinos. The conditions which set off the explosion of cases won't be there even with the economy mostly reopened.

The question is, why weren't we better prepared the first time? We knew about this virus long before it hit the U.S. and it should have been pretty obvious that it was only a matter of time before it does hit us. Everyone was just sitting back and laughing about what China was going through without even thinking of the remote possibility that it will reach the U.S. And lo and behold, it did!

Back in January, all of my colleagues at work were like, "Ah, more people die of the flu. The Coronavirus is nothing!" Now I can't wait to punch them in the face the next time I see them.

New York Times reports (as of ten hours ago):
TOTAL CASES
23,077
DEATHS
718

for a country where the population is 1.366 billion that's surprisingly low
I suspect that being in a tropical climate is helping some to keep cases down. But also it's likely the cases and deaths are much worse than being reported.

If any members here fit into that category, I would strongly caution against self-medicating like that because both agents can cause rare and serious adverse effects including neuropsychiatric effects, hypoglycemia, retinopathy and most notably QTc prolongation with potentially dire consequences as cited - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...a#post17508839.

At the minimum, baseline electrocardiography to evaluate for prolonged QTc is advisable prior to and following initiation of these medications because of the potential for arrhythmias especially in those also taking certain other concomitant QT-interval prolonging medications.
Follow-up.

hence my second comment:

"obviously these numbers will rise, but it's surprising it's not spreading like wildfire (yet), unless there's a lot of undocumented cases going unreported."

the overcrowding mass population in the slum districts the virus infection can and highly likely be catastrophic.

Yes, because it angers me to no end that we even had this pandemic to begin with. It was something that could have easily been avoided had people kept their eyes open. If there is one thing that irritates me is when people can't do the simplest things in life. And preventing this pandemic was really simple. Stopping it now... not so simple.

Honestly, I think if we go through a second wave, it's going to be bad. I don't buy into that "we will be more prepared next time" crap. If we weren't prepared now, then we never will be. Sad, but true.

Still, don't underestimate the effect of climate here. It's springtime going into summer, and India's largest cities have some of the highest heat indexes in the world. And the poor don't have air conditioning.

Trust me, it was easy. It's just that everyone looked the other way and didn't think it was going to become this serious.

Thank you Providence Saint John’s.

Consider that ^ investment as to providing N95s as getting off easy….because an excellent argument could be made with regards to all physicians and other health care providers on the front lines in the E.D. or ICU when doing procedures for providing them PAPR rather than only N95 protection and open face shields.

A large group of people have gathered outside of Civic Plaza protesting the governor’s decision to continue the stay at home order and keep many non-essential businessses closed.

Many people at the protest have American flags and are wearing Trump shirts. They say they need the state to reopen and still adhere to social distancing.

Friday’s protest was organized by some people who are running for office. One man is running for Congress.

The majority of the individuals protesting are asking for restrictions to be lifted so they can go back to work.

“I have a small business and my business deals with essential oils, plants, flowers and so for me and my business it is hard because everything is closed. The way I promote my business is by going out and showing people letting them try out what I have,” said protester Nevaeh Aguilar Rivera.

There were other small business owners at the protest as well. There was also a nurse counter protesting saying hat the virus does not choose who it infects based on political parties.

Despite the protest being across from the police department headquarters, there were no police at the gathering. There are two security guards blocking the Civic Plaza garage.

The protest is expected to go on until 2 p.m.

It could turn out that way, viruses are inherently unpredictable and can mutate unexpectedly.

The second wave of Spanish flu killed more people for a number of reasons, including that a more virulent strain appeared in August.

that's debatable, as WHO stated:

"From the evidence so far, the COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in ALL AREAS, including areas with hot and humid weather"

I never said it couldn't, just that heat and humidity are mitigating factors. It's all physics if you want to google it.

Yes, remember that when this started it was summer in the southern hemisphere.

Hopefully Lacit is right, and that future mutations will be less severe, not more.

Yeah, and just think how bad it could have been in a cold climate like New York.

It's a fact that viruses don't survive as long on hot surfaces and that aerosols are much less prevalent in warm and humid weather. Not to mention that a cough or sneeze won't travel as far in the thicker air.
