I called it the "Sony profile" for shorthand, though people may recall it was said that this was a Dolby-led development so that they could later deploy it for precisely this sort of gaming usage, needing to generate metadata on the fly in the player. I'm quite sure it's been tweaked to specifically run on an Xbox in a gaming environment of course, but the end result is the same: player is doing more of the donkey work and certain TVs aren't compatible with this player-led scenario.

P.S.
Don’t assume that all filming locations for Top Gun: Maverick have been restricted to Coronado and NAS Lemoore.

the significance?
the patch would provide a little history as to where Maverick’s been since Miramar

These things ^ form the basis or DNA of consumers’ devices and the importance of the work in these various groups can not be overstated, thusly they are presented here for insight.

Saturday Op-Ed…..

I see a lot of whining on the internet regarding firmware this, firmware that, with this or that brand TV or Ultra HD Blu-ray player and *issues*. Keep in mind that *issues* are not confined to hobbyists’ toys. At the highest level of R&D, including strictly controlled clinical trials with many, many participants, over time unforeseen *issues* can later become apparent, e.g. - https://www.medicaldevice-network.co...global-market/

Bottom line. Yes, some video related screw-ups by companies are inexcusable, others….not so much, given the resources.

shooting footage for Top Gun: Maverick just west of Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. Pictured in the background is the Sierra Nevada mountain range (and as an aside, just over those slopes is the Sequoia National Forest where portions of Wild (2014) with Reese Witherspoon was filmed.

Perhaps a deep dive into Digital Cinema that only the likes of darinp will be appreciative and a handful of others, but I'll post a link anyway for those who may have interest -

“One of the key differentiators for a premium image quality is good contrast (or a deep black level) which, in combination with a higher 2D brightness, paves the way towards true cinema HDR.”

Shout out to Ralph Potts, reviewer over at AVS, but I’m told, also occasional reader of this thread in order to stay cutting edge. Can your former homies from the New York State Police match this ?

P.S. In the YouTube clip, the quickie showing the ‘To Set’ sign is on the bayside of Peohe’s Coronado.

For those dining at Peohe’s (and if you don’t fill up on sushi first) my wife recommends the Chilean Sea Bass Pinot Noir, whereas I’m kind of partial to the Halibut Mai'a.

I haven’t gotten beyond about the 7 min. mark of the presentation because I’m hitting the sack early tonight, but I assume he’s referring to 5G’s benefits related to future 16K commercial rather than consumer displays. Anyway, so far nice videoclip describing how 5G will be revolutionary in terms of changing peoples’ lives not only regarding media & entertainment, but other things too and I'll save the clip for later watching.
Earlier this month there was an IEEE Broadcast Symposium held in Arlington, Va. (just over Key Bridge) of which the Technical Program included a host of items such as ATSC 3 and UHD, 4K HDR Workflow, 5G, etc. - https://bts.ieee.org/broadcastsympos...l-program.html

With time, some of the slides and or videos from the presentations may show up online, but until then with regards to 5G, see - https://5g-xcast.eu/2018/10/15/5g-xc...ymposium-2018/

Also, note on that ^ page is a link to slides of Dr. Prasad’s talk which, if I recall, includes plans, timetable and such.

^ addendum in terms of speakers on the 5G subject with regards to the upcoming SMPTE Tech Conference beginning tomorrow in L.A. I’m not much into autonomous cars at this point, but I think many attendees are interested in its advanced video applications for motion picture entertainment,

so scroll down to Mauricio Aracena (who also recently chaired the definition of commercial requirements for HDR dynamic display mapping for UHD-1 Phase 2 additions within DVB) on the list of speakers - http://www.cvent.com/events/smpte-20...7ed05d306.aspx
and hopefully at least a little of that application of 5G will be touched on by Mauricio or others.

Meanwhile, as for me, along with rooting for the Dodgers , I’ll be following the signs and trucks down in the environs of San Diego..

Among other things, in order to keep Agent Kay, alexanderg823 and others as well informed as possible -

Default HDR10+ and Display Mapping / Adaptation

"HRD10 and HDR10+ are open standards, so lack the relative guarantee of image playback, with each display manufacturer defining their own internal HDR processing." [Light Illusion]
https://www.lightillusion.com/hdr_calibration.html

Is it true that each HDR10+ display manufacturer can define their own internal HDR processing?

Look quite different on each HDR10 TV (i.e. a very loose interpretation of the original creative intent), due to lack of display mapping standardization across manufacturers.

That's sounds sad.

Just for fun, I like the center row bottom image on the image in the right side column middle best.
