Contact AMPAS (although not officially listed as one of these projects - http://www.oscars.org/science-technology/projects ) and if you’re nice they’ll send you samples of the test(s).

P.S.
Not a “killer app” but a very helpful ingredient to the total recipe for UHD.
See I think that the photochemical way of doing things like ENR is miles better this is just a new way to sell TVs

Not solely to sell more TVs. There is genuine interest much further upstream than that, e.g. DPs are quite excited about HDR, read Day 1 - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...r#post10412190

Penton man, this link relates to your Aston Villa comments in the sports section. Check out the painting. Thought it might be of interest.

Sorry for being off-topic but I know you sometimes avoid spoilers until you catch certain games so may miss it.

Unfortunately most of those worldwide sales come from China, and in that market it's a race to the bottom.

They are buying Seiki's, TCLs, Changongs etc in droves. It's a competition to see who can make the cheapest, crappiest panel possible.

Very cool history.

I was quite amazed this week when one of my friends (Aston Villa supporter) informed me how close the Liverpool and Everton stadiums are (separated only by some city park says he, my goodness there must be different club supporters within peoples’ own families in that region of your country)…and I had thought (by Tob’s pic) that Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur were close by each other.

I love English football (soccer), the grounds, the history, etc. I wish I could visit the Prem thread more often but those guys are almost real time over there with results and such.

Well varg, I don’t care where or who drives consumer electronics companies to manufacture more 4K sets, be it the Chinese population in China or the polar bears in Antarctica. All that’s important to me is that there is incentive to do so. Just like I don’t care if all the rich people all over the world enable LG to make a successful go of it with OLED, as long as someday large 4K OLED displays become more pocketbook-friendly to the typical consumer and that particular display tech doesn’t end up being a failed endeavor or bridge to nowhere.

Anyway, one of the goals of the UHD Alliance is to guide consumers by setting some sort of minimum UHD standard(s), as well as interoperability. Excuse the accent –

Plus, it would help if Deluxe were a member too because they’re doing so much of the work behind-the-scenes for these UHD Alliance members anyway…..think the deliverable brains behind the UHD operation, so to speak.

Is there some coordination between BDA and UHD Alliance?

You should care because the people who drive the majority of sales will determine the direction of display technology. They will determine the companies who go out of business and the ones who don't.

So you should most definitely care about the people who buy 75% of 4K TVs, you should be interested in who they are and what their motivations are when purchasing a new TV set.

Much of the topics frequently discussed in this section - improved dynamic range, temporal resolution, bit-depth, gamut etc. They all become largely irrelevant if the display market becomes dominated by Chinese companies making crappy $200 panels.

Much as I despise Sony's "Mastered in 4K" line of Blu-rays for making people think they are actually 4K resolution releases, surely these are prime candidates for UHD BD launch titles.

Im also hoping for a UHD release of Baraka, which according to my 2008 BD packaging has "Scanned at 8K Ultra High Resolution from 65/5p film elements, 16/1 oversampled digital intermediate to 1080p High Definition 16x9, VC-1/Max Bitrate 35Mbps". It looks spectacular upscaled to UltraHD.

I can’t speak authoritatively about that as I’ve never attended a UHD Alliance meeting nor been involved in any such formal discussions, but I would venture that the Ultra HD Blu-ray specs would be something that the UHD Alliance would aspire to, if they could, rather than vice versa.

I should eat more broccoli too.

I see your point, but I think we’ll still do o.k. here in the U.S. as well as folks in the U.K., Europe, etc., no matter what the quality of the Chinese manufactured 4K products sold in China. If I prove wrong, I'll allow you to force feed me broccoli.

Jono, unfortunately, something the packaging doesn’t reveal to videophiles is that the 8K scan files were never saved (only an HDCAM-SR master); therefore, if people are looking forward to a true 4K UHD Blu-ray version of that flick, the whole movie would need to be rescanned again.

That's a shame. There's a great Restoration bonus feature on the disc detailing how they scanned the 65mm film at 8K and it took ~30TB of disc space etc and how great it looks.

Any idea if Samsara has the same fate? According to the feature on the disc it was again shot on 65mm film, scanned at 8K, then mastered in 4K before producing the HD version for the disc. Hopefully then kept the 4K files...

It’s da DI step in the process that’s the stumbling block between the two productions to fulfill greatest potential for an Ultra HD Blu-ray product.

Baraka 8K scan -> HD DI [never mastered at a rez above 2K...and 8K raw files not saved (cost)].
Samsara 8K scan -> 4K DI. Ergo, you should be fine for Samsara.

any thoughts or information on why the scan files were never saved?

Hillary charges outside interests steep fees for data storage on her at home servers?....j/k (I’m a little exuberant over the FA Cup match played last night at Old Trafford).

Seriously, the ‘why’ I think would best be answered by the producers themselves, out of due respect to all parties involved.

I'm just wondering because I heard "cost" mentioned, which does not compute. 30TB of storage sounds like a lot, but actually in an IBM tape library would cost about $500.

I see what you mean. Maybe unclear wording on my part in the response to jono above. Much of the ‘cost’ of producing a higher rez master (be it 4K, 6K, 8K) over that of just an HD master is incurred by data storage.
