But due to practical constraints and legacy issues, another approach is to choose a transfer function curve that goes part of the way to being a PQ curve but retains at least partly the shape of an SDR curve so it can be used on SDR or HDR sets without metadata, soooo we have the hybrid log-gamma (HLG) curve approach. HLG advocates touting other advantages to that system, as another Richard ![]() |

Before that, an independent non-profit group already has its sights on doing an HDR shootout (at a professional scientific testing level) with different displays and content coded with different standards. This should provide some guidance.

So, while we await the next 4K content to come down the pike, here’s a few clips to keep folks 4K occupied……

Not that I'm optimistic about this format being a success, but every home media release had kind of a spotty launch. Couple of brand new titles, couple of random catalog titles, and at least one or two kids movies.
I still remember some electronics trade show where they were promoting HD-DVD before release, and one of their primary "show-off" titles was Doom. Freaking Doom! I remember somebody mentioning that they purposely release some of their mediocre catalog at launch because they know early adopters will buy it anyway just to have content and show it off. For example, I remember a lot of people picking up titles on Blu-Ray early on like Ghost Rider and Swordfish. Not because they liked the movie, but because it was cool "demo material." Remember when everyone was picking up the movie "Click" because it was the first BD-50 release? ![]() |

Freaking Doom looked good to!
![]() I bought Click & my only memory of that is it had troubles loading on the launch Sammy. After an hour I got it to play. Oh & Swordfish was a fun movie. Honestly it didn't look great throughout Imo. Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & King Kong are the last movies released I remember to have seen that are/were flawless. Dunno if these two were 2K or 4K, I'd still buy the upconvert. |

You be the judge.

b.t.w., D-Cinema people can see from the file name above ^ that it signifies the rather typical interop DCP as the transition to SMPTE DCPs by the studios remains a slow process; however, I can inform you that next January, Walt Disney Studios plans to issue (the finer) SMPTE DCP format for a movie about the Coast Guard rescuing shipmates from the sea.
