I quite like him too and I think it'd be interesting for him to return to the role that really made him the star he is today.

Yea, I agree This is definitely the role I'd like to see him reprise. can't think of any of his roles other than Ethan Hunt I'd really like to see him play again. So I hope this happens

I may have to actually watch Top Gun properly now, because in the past I haven't done.

Tony Scott Wants to Direct 'Top Gun 2'

Recently when we heard that Paramount was looking to woo Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott back to the studio to make a sequel to the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun I cast aspersions upon the idea that Tony Scott might actually direct a sequel. But I was wrong — Tony Scott said this weekend that he is, in fact, interested in doing Top Gun 2, and that he’s on board for the sequel. It won’t be his next film, but it could happen not too far down the road. Mr. Scott’s comments about what might draw him back to the fold are after the break.

HitFix spoke to the director, and he said, “I don’t want to do a remake. I don’t want to do a reinvention. I want to do a new movie.”

This film may or may not involved Maverick, the character played by Tom Cruise in the original, but Tony Scott’s current ideas sparked when he met a young Air Force ‘pilot’ who works with unmanned drones. And reading the director’s comments about the ‘new’ Air Force in these post-Cold War days, I’m quick to envision something that is like Top Gun plus WarGames… or perhaps a film that resembles Ender’s Game, with more alcohol and hot women.

Quote:
I’m not waiting for a script. I’m going to do my homework. I’m going down to I think it’s Fallon, Nevada, down near New Mexico and it’s a whole different world now… These computer geeks — these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night.
So take scenes of Denzel Washington working the transit control room in The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, and expand that into the new Top Gun. I know that the world of air combat has changed, but I’m very curious to see how Tony Scott makes a movie that can compare to the iconic Top Gun out of people conducting warfare at such a remove. He’s also saying that this will be, as we’d heard, about the end of the ‘old’ Air Force, to some extent, and he acknowledges that these guys are still trained as pilots. So will we see a drone pilot jumping into a manned aircraft to save the day in the end?

Screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie says Maverick is the Star of 'Top Gun 2'

Huge Top Gun 2 stories have flown onto our radar the past couple weeks, with reports that scribe Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) had been tapped for screenwriting duties and Tony Scott’s confirmation that he’ll be returning to the director’s chair both breaking. The initial belief was that McQuarrie had incorporated Tom Cruise’s Maverick character in a minor appearance and in hopes of avoiding the cameo from being deemed overtly “obvious”. Now McQuarrie has sent a polite revision of this rumor over to Vulture. His statement: “There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role.” Assuming his screenplay is left unscathed and welcomed by all parties involved, it sounds like Tom Cruise is to be expected back in his on-screen pilot’s seat after all. Now we just need to get Iceman on board as his wingman.

Top Gun 2 will be developed by Jerry Bruckheimer with Paramount and its financing partner, Skydance Productions. Scott is circling a variety of projects, one of which he’ll complete before setting his sights on Top Gun 2. His next film, Unstoppable, hits theaters November 12th.

Scott has said this with regards to what he’d like to examine in the post-millennial Air Force:

Quote:
“These computer geeks — these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night.”
It is unknown whether McQuarrie and Scott have been collaborating on drafts, but assuming this is the case and Top Gun 2 does in fact see the return of Maverick, where would he fit in a story about a fraternity of nerds who pilot aircraft in live combat like it’s a videogame? To me, it sounds vaguely reminiscent of a present-day Ender’s Game. Will we watch an obsolete Maverick struggle to get his bearings on his career as he plays babysitter? Leave your thoughts below.

I know someone probably already said this but WHY ? this is a terrible idea.Top Gun is just a cheesy 80's action flick(which I due love) but whats the point on making a sequel 25 years later with Tom Curies aka Mav taking a back set role. He's suppose to be a Mavrick and now he's going to be a teacher.LAME not every movie needs a sequel or just look at how back Wall Street 2,Lethal Weapon 3 and 4,Indiana Jones 4.....ect all turned out.

Leave the awesome 80's movies alone.

Default "Top Gun" sequel in the works: Tom Cruise

From CBS News:
Quote:
Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell may be back flying planes. Tom Cruise says that a "Top Gun" sequel is in the works.

"We're working on it," Cruise told MTV News about a follow-up to the hit 1986 film. "I hope we can figure this out to do it again."

Cruise said he's talking with director Tony Scott about a plot.

"If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot 'Top Gun,'" he said.

Cruise broke the "Top Gun 2" news while in Dubai plugging another film franchise, the latest "Mission Impossible" installment, "Ghost Protocol."

But what about the Iceman? Val Kilmer looks like he ate Goose. Maybe they can write that into the plot.

Oh. My. God. Lets be honest here - Top Gun was the cheesiest, clichededest, sappiest, most laughable film ever. Sure, it ooozed manliness with all the tough flying beefy young men. It had all the completely "stock", right off-the-shelf characters like the misunderstood & talented, yet misguided young hunky pilot. It had the totally unrealsitically super-hot flight instructor chick. It had the grizzled, old veteran pilot whom was all-wise. And, it had the perfect supporting cast. Great soundtrack too.

But...a SEQUEL? Is that what Tom Cruises career has come to? I mean.... really? He cant be broke..can he? Has Scientology ruined him this much?

Wow.

C'mom, s2mikey... it was a movie meant for entertainment. Top Gun was entertaining and I don't think I'm alone in that thinking.

I think it was heath ledger who said it best ... "why so serious?"

I'd definitely check out a TG sequel. I have no idea how they would run with it but I'd watch it just to see.

To be fair, Tom has received his share of award nominations (and even a few wins) throughout his career, so he doesn't have much to prove at this point. If he wants to indulge his inner youth by revisiting a film that made him a household name, and he has the backers to make it happen, he should pursue it. Hard to believe that it's been 25 years since he assumed the role of "Maverick", but he's held up well (for a 49-year old) and him being in the role of instructor or active duty isn't that much of a stretch.
