The scene in The Dark Knight where Bruce Wayne is testing the gun underground.
Serious LFE test! Anyone with a really powerful Subwoofer will feel it in their chest!

+1 to that, watched my digital copy on my pc the other day and could not believe how much sound (especially the lfe) made that scene

Had to resurrect the thread because I threw in the Matrix series while my neighbors were still away (they're back now ) and when I got to the Deus ex Machina scenes at the end, I almost crapped my pants.

Since getting my sub, I've been revisiting many old favorites and finding new stuff in them with the help of a sub. I usually watch a movie with my Onkyo turned up to a volume of -30 to -26 from reference.

But since the neighbors were away, my sub level was at the 12:30 position, with the receiver level at -10.0 from reference just to hear that big damn robo-baby talk.

Good FRIKKEN JESUS!!!!

My whole apartment shook, the floor beneath me quaked, and the strength of the sound from my lil ol' Polks, and my A2-300 -

I swear to god -

FELT LIKE WIND!!!!!

Those with similar or better setups - I'd definitely encourage you cranking these scenes up!! Even if you hate the Matrix and think parts 2&3 suck - if you own it, you owe it to yourself to truly crank it up, and hold on for dear life!

Best sound experience I've had ever!!!

Cheers, Doc.

Nice!

I agree....these 3 films, especialy 2 and 3 are some of the best HT audio to date. LOVE the use of LFE in these films, especialy 2 and 3.

finally pulled the trigger on Hell Boy II, and it is now my favorite reference audio disc. 5.1 mind you, someday I'll be able to check out the added benefit of 7.1.

The car chase scene at the beginning of Quantum of Solace, I think it actually cracked one of my windows. That is reference grade quality.

The best sounding blu will eventually go to the opening battle sequence in Gladiator, I don't think anything will ever top that. Except for maybe the "Fortunate Son" scene in Forrest Gump. We will have to wait and see.

I 100% agree with you. I find myself watching this scene over and over again! My neighbors probably know the sequence of sounds by heart. Last night I imagined my neighbors pointing on cue with each crash and gunshot. I also get a little turned on by the sound of that Aston Martin. What a beaut!

Strangest thing, my Forrest Gump DVD only has sound in the front channels. I checked the french 2.0 Dolby track and it played in surround, but when I switch it to english 5.1, it just plays up front. I even waited a couple years and bought another copy at a big discount. Same deal. And I've never had the same problem with any other movie.
Long story short, I can't wait for this one to come out in blu. It's a great movie and I'm sure will be fun to crank up loud.

Cloverfield, when they are below the city in the subway, and you hear the military battling from above. Very cool effect. It does a great job of sounding above you and in the distance

For acoustic guitar, here are some of my favorites

Dave Mathews and Tim Reynolds

John Mayer, the opening set

From a movie perspective: August Rush : 1) The scene where August first plays Robin Williams guitar 2) The scene in the park with August and Jonathan Rhys Meyers playing each other guitars.

I watched "Signs" for the first time on Blu-ray last night. Hadn't watched the film in at least a year. The surround effects and placement are really top-notch. The scene where they're banging on the door literally made me jump as I thought someone was doing so on mine!

Some that have been overlooked:
On DVD....
  • Titan A.E. : The ice ring scene
  • The Haunting (DTS) : It's cold in here scene

On Blu-Ray....
  • King Kong (Peter Jackson remake) : Throughout. BTW, the DTS-HD mix on the Blu-Ray is beteter than the DD+ on HDDVD. Worth upgrading.
  • Shoot Em' Up: Throughout

if you'd like a similar effect, master and commander does this superbly. also, consider getting 'The orphanage' and skip to the scene where the wife wakes up and goes out of her room into the hall way. oh you will know what im talking about.

Just going over my reference list:

Master and Commander
Cloverfield
Legends of Jazz
U-571
The Bourne Ultimatum
The Incredible Hulk
The Orphanage
Live free or Die Hard
Superman Returns
The Prestige
Kung Fu Panda
Man of Fire
X-MEN 2

At first I had X-MEN 2 just short of reference but i'll move it to reference. Along with great dialogue and score, scenes that stick out for me are the Cerebro scenes towards the end and the Jean holding back the dam and moving the jet.
