I truly believe the Magnolia Pictures BD release of Red Cliff Part I & II deserves a place on this list. The music, dialog, and varied sounds of battle are all first rate.

Default Reference Audio Demo?

I am finally close to installing my Home Theater setup. I have demo PQ that I show off, but what should I go to (movie and scene) that will show off great 7.1 surround sound? I am willing to buy a movie just for a sound demo. I understand that there is great 5.1 (most movies) and I would like those suggestions too.

I use Transformers as a general-purpose demo disc since it looks and sounds great, though I hate the movie.
As far as I know there aren't many native 7.1 mixes, since most theaters aren't equipped for it so most movies aren't mixed for it.

I like U571 for the depth charge scenes. Huge explosions and surround mixed with subtle creaking and scraping.

Brother every movie i list has some breath taking audio. I might miss a few but i will bet my life that these titles blow you away. Using all 5 speakers to show of detail, and loads of LFE. Here Goes

The Dark Knight (Best Dolby True HD track ive ever heard)

Sin City (Evil Narration AQ)

Red Cliff(If you own this one, But amazing, amazing PQ and AQ)

Termination Salvation( Insane AQ during certain Scenes)

Both Transformers (Also Insane AQ during the entire movie, the fights and Sound effects while they are transformers AMAZING)

The Watchmen (Crisp Clean AQ)

Hot Fuzz (Will Kill your sub loads of LFE)

Black Hawk Down (If you want to feel the War at home, you can feel the bullets flying through your HT)

EVERY SINGLE PIXAR FILM has reference PQ and AQ. Pixar doesn't "F" around with their films!!

And last but surly the best The Lord of Rings Trilogy ( the AQ is ridiculous, it has everything, dumb amounts of LFE, Razor clear battle scenes, And in depth Narration).

I believe out of this whole list Lord of the Rings and Transformers are the Best Audio References hands down.

All of these are 5.1 unless clarified

For LFE/Bass:
The Hurt Locker - Very Beginning
The Incredible Hulk - Campus Scene
Watchmen - Very Beginning

For Atmospheric Surround Sound:
Drag Me To Hell - Any scene inside a room
King Kong - Jungle Scenes (Very atmospheric)
Sunshine - Any scene

For Both:
Lord of the Rings Trilogy is DTS HD 6.1 - Any action scene.
Knowing - Plane crash.

Pixar films also have great clarity. You can year every distinct sound effect on any disc. My favorites are Wall-E and Toy Story 2.

I'd have to say Shoot Em Up is the ultimate film for an AQ demo. 7.1 audio with amazing shootouts and a nice hard rock soundtrack. Any scene where a gun is fired (there are plenty) would be demo worthy.

In terms of concerts, Within Temptation's Black Symphony is an epic 5.1 LPCM soundtrack, with a full orchestra combined with rock/metal and beautiful female vocals.

Terminator Salvation is quite an impressive ride if you want to WOW someone! From the opening scene the AQ is like a 12 on a 10 scale! Demo that 1st 10-15 minutes then demo the 10-15 minutes when everyone is captured. After those 2 scenes and you turn the lights back on ask your guests to pick up their jaws from the floor because they just witnessed lossless audio at its finest!

An unbelievable quick hitting scene that made me jump out of my seat the 1st time I saw it is the plane crash scene in Knowing. Use of fronts, backs and surrounds with the unexpectedness of what just happened and what you just saw makes this a great opening when demoing your 7.1 system.

Live free or Die Hard has one of the best AQ for demo. The neighbors might call the cops with all the gun fire coming from your house...and it's bass filled gunfire!

+1 with the Campus scene from the Incredible Hulk.

The 1st chapter of Toy Story 2 when Buzz fights Zorg...That's easily a 10 out of 10 in my book! The bass, the clarity...it's a real treat!

I use THX Ultra 2 setting on my AVR for 7.1!
