The Dark Knight - By default this gets on the list because of the IMAX scenes...simply amazing

Gladiator - Simply stunning clean picture. Came out right before the era of the awful Michael Bay like color grading where everything has an orange tint and huge shadows....aw the "blockbuster" look they call it. As much as I love computers, people have way to much control on the images which leads to silly "artistic" decisions.

Goldfinger - Just love the clean natural look to the movie.

If we are talking strictly color saturation and fine detail then I would rank the top 3 like so:

1) Avatar
2) Baraka
3) Blade Runner

Very surprised to see anyone mentioning Dark Knight. That movie looks pretty average outside of the imax scenes, and even they are not the best ive seen, especially that one where he's flying away from the building in Hong Kong. All kinds of flickering going on. And there isnt even that many imax scenes in it.

Anyway, mine would be:

Apocalypto
No Country
Casino Royale/Qos (cant really decide which actually looks better)

I don't really have that many:

How The West Was Won
The Wolfman
& I'm sure Ben-Hur will round that up to three

Best looking in terms of PQ or
Best looking in terms of the film itself?

the film itself:

1. Barry Lyndon
2. The Fall
3. Days of Heaven

True Grit is the best looking BD? I am going to cry foul on that one. Sure it's great, bit it's certainly not perfect.

Opinions I guess, not fact. Some are mentioning TDK which is crazy to me, but I guess to them it looks great. Most of it looks pretty average to me.

I agree that The Dark Knight is not perfect. The IMAX scenes are indeed perfect, but the regular 35mm parts of the film suffer from edge enhancement and some unresolved blacks.

What about that hong kong scene when he's flying away from the building? You can see all kinds of ugly flicker on the building. I remember tons of people talking about it, so even the arent perfect.

Was that not an aliasing issue?

No idea, looks like it though. It wasnt pretty, especially in such a huge release. I remember pages and pages of people arguing over that.

Hopefully nothing like that makes it into the imax scenes of TDKR, since they plan on shooting more of them.

If we were talking most flawless IMAX shots then it would be tossup between Avatar and Tron: Legacy IMHO.

Yeah well it's just the people complaining about that green tint issue. I figured you must have known about all those people arguing about that, so I figured someone was going to mention that one sooner or later.
