Yeah I would agree that Avatar looks better than TDK. Much more clarity and detail, more contrast, saturation, more everything.

Edit: I took out Sin City and put in Life. Amazing PQ in my opinion, even better than Planet Earth.

1. Avatar CE

2. Toy Story 3 (just because it's the latest from them, but every Pixar film would suffice)

3. A tie between Shrek 4 and HTTYD

BRING ON RANGO!! According to the site review, it's the best looking animation available on Blu-ray.

Not counting animation
Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Big Screen Edition
The Incredible Hulk
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (I am a bit biased because these are some of my favorite movies)

as well as Star Trek (2009),
I, Robot,
and Tron Legacy

I guess I gave two pairs of 3

EDIT: When it comes to animation, my favorite Transfers are
Cars/A Cars Toon: Mater's Tall Tales
Kung Fu Panda
Wall-E

This question worked about 4 years ago, but there are too many blus out there now. Most of them, both old & new releases, look great.

I don't know about limiting them to three, maybe ten. It's also hard to really compare live action shot on film, to live action shot with digital cameras, to cgi animation, to cell animation, to stop motion animation, and compare 3-D to 2-D, etc.

I agree, it is now impossible, especially for those of us with hundreds of Blu- Rays, to have just three. NO FRICK'N WAY. Seriously, you'd have to seperate it now into genre's, because the vast majority of the time the animated stuff is going to rank first. Stuff like "UP" is just to die for in term of PQ. Then you do have "live" stuff out there that is excellent, but again....there's just too many possibilities now. Perhaps if you changed the question to "top 20 in our collections". I think that would be more fitting. Heck, not even top 10 would cut it for me.

My three Favorites:

Baraka
2001: A Space Odyssey
Avatar

Honorable mention:

Aliens: Excellent Restoration

Saving Private Ryan: Knowing how gritty this film looks on DVD, my jaw Dropped when I popped in the Blu Ray.

Kung Fu Panda: my first Blu Ray purchase and another jaw dropper

Dragon Hunters: Just watch it

Coraline

- Aliens

- Taxi Driver

- Fantasia

(mentions to: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Beauty & The Beast, It's A Wonderful Life (B&W), Bridge On the River Kwai, Alien, Sleeping Beauty).

Whilst Avatar and other digitally shot films look nice, I don't think they look nearly as impressive as celluloid films that have had a 4K transfer. And once 4K becomes standard, some of those films in a 6K or 8K transfer will look superb.

After reading the stellar review earlier today I'm going to imagine a lot of us are soon going to be adding Rango to our lists

It looks as good as any Pixar title I have seen on BD.

1. Speed Racer
- Still the king of PQ despite being a HD-DVD/25GB disc movie. Flawless 100% digital filming and transfer.

2. Avatar
- You almost get the 3-D effect without 3D.

3. Land of the lost / King Kong tie
- both have a superb movie "feel" to them but still capture high details in skin etc

I didn't list any cartoon movies because they all look pretty much the same high quality IMO because they are all digital from a computer.

And I'm surprised so many people mentioned the Dark Knight. I thought it looked kind of ugly, too much obvious grain.

I never noticed that...maybe I need to get a real Blu-ray player instead of that crappy PS3?

My top 3 would be:

1. Natural Born Killers
2. The Thing
3. Transformers

Of course all Pixar titles are pretty much referance material.
