Definitely must have been something tweaked wrong in your system, or your screen is too small to show off the best attributes of these films. I have a projection system with a ten foot screen and the final ballet is the single best looking thing I have on bluray... Contrast, color, resolution, all spot on perfect. It's a jaw dropper. Check out the frame grabs at DVD Beaver. Likewise for The Searchers. John Ford movies demand a wall sized screen. The compositions are designed for that scale.

Ten Commandments was in Vistavision. The film was 35mm, but the orientation was horizontal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VistaVision

It's not 70mm, but it's still higher resolution than normal films.

Recently, I got my hands on a UK copy of Peeping Tom. That film will never win prizes in the resolution category, but the color was phenominal. i've never seen a more beautifully transferred color palette. It bests Criterion's Red Shoes, Pandora and the Flying Dutchman, and Criterion's own DVD transfer of Peeping Tom for color and contrast.

Modern effects films are usually sharp, but no modern film comes close to the richness of color of a good three strip Technicolor film.

Hmm.

Rango I agree with, but I have all three of these and 2001, for it's age, easily looks better than Saving Private Ryan to me. The Thin Red Line is actually a better-looking movie if we're comparing strictly 1998 World War II movies.

SPR is a fantastic transfer but I think the way it was filmed makes it inherently a little less pretty than 2001.

Just my $0.02.

I do think that the top 3 for video quality deserves its own thread. A lot of people like seeing which films are consistently given the highest praise in terms of video quality. I am one of those people, and I think it would be great if we retained that specific thread for quick reference.

My wife watched Valkyrie recently and the audio in that is FANTASTIC.

I never noticed it before however I was in the other room when I heard the sub and wow. The scene when they are in the bomb shelter might be one of the best out there for audio.

It was really fantastic... I think it is in my top 5 audio movies now.

I really love The Island's audio quality. And Up's AQ is magnificent as well. The scene with the dog fighter pilots is amazing.

Is is just me or do Dolby True HD tracks sound a little weak? They just dont seem to have the punch & dynamics that DTS HD & PCM have.

I'll give a couple:

Transformers 1&2 - Every action scene is awesome! Never disappoints!

Tron: Legacy - Best disc ever when your considering sfx + soundtrack.

Band of Brothers - Some of those set pieces are just freaking incredible.

WALLE - On one end you have ship landing on earth rocking your HT and on the other you have the space waltz caressing your speakers.
