Planet Earth 2 looks amazing on my C6, your B6 will thank you.
I would assume he has no idea about it and just wanted to get sale, but I'm still cautiously optimistic. As it is, there isn't a 4k disc in DV I actually want to watch until F8 comes put anyway.

The free movie list seems to be their whole 4K catalog minus whatever is out of stock.

I preordered the X800 but just redeemed my offer and the whole catalog is not available online. After you select the two free titles it allows you to select up to 3 titles for 60% off MSRP & free ship. On this screen the entire catalog is available ($14.60 for most titles).

I had a hard time selecting as I already owned the some of the titles. I ended up with Underworld Awakening and Magificent Seven with plans to sell M7.

I kinda regret not getting Crouching Tiger but the mastered in 4k Blu-ray is already so good! I care most about audio quality 3D vs 4k video.

Maybe they changed from when I redeemed it.

Default Sony UBP-X800 4K UHD Blu-ray player

In response to the AV forum review posted above.

I didn't buy the X800 in the hope it will receive DV. Also, if it doesn't get it, oh well. I won't be upset because I knew what I was buying. However, it would be a nice bonus if it did. Couldn't hurt to have it. With that said:

1) The author is stating definitively that it will not get DV. Where was that info published officially? If it wasn't, is that some inside info? I've been paying attention and haven't heard Sony say anything.

2) We know that DV can be updated via firmware/software now and doesn't need the imbedded chipset as DV initially required when first launched. Is the author trying to say that the X800 hardware doesn't have the power to correctly process it internally even if it did have the capacity to receive a DV software/firmware patch?

I am guessing this is the #1 4k player to get? Is it region free? I couldn't find anything on it.

It's certainly the player I would recommend, but there are are few things to consider. If Dolby Vision is important to you, you should look at an Oppo player or the LG 4K player. If build quality, compatibility with all disc formats, and customization are important to you, then the Sony UBP-X800 is the best value for your money.

The UHD disc format itself is region free (meaning that any UHD disc from anywhere in the world will play on any UHD player). However, the UBP-X800 is region-locked for standard Blu-rays and DVDs.

I plan on getting the 65" LG OLED curve once I have the money. It's looks like I could go with either the LG player or X-800. I was thinking about picking on of them up tomorrow.

Sad that the player is not region free. So many steelbooks they won't play. Such a shame.

220 makes a region free modded version of it, but for the price it would make more sense just to get 2 players. But if your curious: http://www.220-electronics.com/sony-...ay-player.html

I'm very happy with the X800. Most of the reviews of the lg haven't been promising. I have a region free s5100 for that stuff, even though I actually don't have that many B discs.

At the same time as the UBP-X800 was announced, Sony also revealed that their TVs using the X1 Extreme processor would be getting an upgrade for Dolby Vision. This good news was tempered by the realisation that the X800 wouldn't and couldn't support Dolby Vision, so was this an own-goal from Sony? It seemed fairly obvious at the time that Sony's decision to add Dolby Vision to certain TVs was taken very late in the day and the development of the X800 was too far along for such a significant change that would require a different chipset.
The Sony TV's are based on a quad-core MTK processor (SoC) that is DV capable. The x800 or x1000 are not.

John Archer put out this inaccurate article about Dolby Vision being a software update to many devices which a lot of the media replicated, but the facts are that you have either a hardware enabled against particular DV capable SoC or you have Dolby saying that the SoC without this, has to have enough processing power to handle the software implementation to Dolby’s satisfaction. Sony has been totally quiet about this.

Thanks for the info John. I'm pretty sure I know where you were going, but I'm having trouble deciphering the latter half of your second paragraph (from "the facts are..") Would you mind re-phrasing it?

Thanks!

I think he was basically saying that - yes, there can be a "software-only" implementation of DV (the internal chip doesn't necessarily have to be one of the original chips designed especially for DV), but the player's chip needs to at least meet some minimum speed/power requirement and possibly be approved by Dolby. At this point, we don't know the processing power of the X800 or if it would meet Dolby's requirements for DV implementation.

I don't know if any of that is true, but it would make sense.

Does this player have the Berlin Philharmonic's Digital Concert Hall app? I have a subscription and I've not seen anyone comment about it's inclusion in this player.

Just picked this baby up. So far so good. My only complaint is how big/heavy the player is. Where do I find the SN to redeem the movies?

That's close enough. I can't find the original Q&A but it goes like this:

Quote:
“There are implementations that can run Dolby Vision in software, certainly in the console space but also in the TV SoC space. Specifics vary on a case-by-case basis depending on the hardware capability of the silicon in question, but we have development kits for various types of implementations, depending on the application: full hardware, hybrid of software and hardware or [and this is the crucial bit] full software.
Pretty Vague, but full software is most difficult to get Dolby's approval it appears.

On the back of the player there is a sticker with the model number and serial number.
