If you are going to use any sort of cleansing agent ,REMEMBER TO USE DISTILLED WATER AS YOUR LAST CLEAN . Every cleaning agent will ALWAYS leave a FILM/COAT.
If you do not , EXPECT some detrimental effect on your viewing pleasure AND your precious collection .

in other words , IS THIS GOOD ADVICE !
And anyone reading ADVICE GIVEN ON THE INTERNET , SHOULD THINK TWICE and do a little RESEARCH to make sure you are doing the RIGHT THING .

I don't use distilled water, and my discs from 1985 still play.
Remember, there are many ways to clean your discs, and no scientific data as to which one is best. ...And the same with the various Disc cleaning machines.
Give the best advice you can as your experience.

Any ideas why Dunkirk won't pass HDR any more to my LG C7? Just reverts to standard SDR...

as a retired Audio Visual technician ,professional Photographer , lifelong Audiophile who has worked Government Archival contracts ,I feel my advice is sound .
It bothers me when Internet Einsteins who know it all ,who have no qualifications to back up the veracity of their statements , feel free to tell all what MIGHT work. When I see statements like the one I responded to ,I offer a safety net .

I don't question your professionalism and good advice on distilled water. I'm saying that other methods that don't use distilled water work too.

Some 4K UHD Blu-ray discs have difficulty playing properly with the Sony X800 4K Blu-ray player...freezes, audio dropouts or even not playing @ all. It also happens occasionally with other 4K Blu-ray player brands. And it is recommended trying to clean the disc first before you return it for an exchange or even return your player for a refund.

I posted three short videos on cleaning methods.The first one is free; dish soap and regular water from the kitchen tap. The other two are an investment on disc cleaning machines; they cost anywhere from roughly $10 to $40. Many of those kits use a liquid solution based from a mix of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water.

Many reports came back positive from using the first free method, with dish soap and regular water. Or you can use warm water and a chamois to dry.
It works for some, but not for all. We don't know exactly all the reasons why, but we've heard many...from some discs having a smearing smudge layer to sensitive reading lasers.

A simple quote from the conclusion review above:

"Unfortunately, the drive does not quite convince. Although the working noise is pleasantly low, discs with obvious signs of wear have difficulty reading in - the reading process slows down noticeably."

It's a German translation from Google so it is not perfect.
And of course it can happen with brand new 4K UHD Blu-ray discs.

But yes, try that when it happens:
- Clean the disc using dish soap.
- Rinse it under warm water.
- Let it dry by itself or use a soft chamois.
- Apply distilled water for a final rinse and soft dry it with a chamois.

Or:
- Find a disc cleaning machine, a manual rotary type that comes with a small solution bottle.
I think I paid $20 for my Allsop one a long time ago. It is very similar to the one from the third video I posted yesterday. There are few brands around...Google it from Amazon and eBay, plus other vendors.

Not much bothers me from the 'Internet's Einsteins'.
I don't have prejudices, I give the benefit of doubt equally to all.
When someone recommends a cleaning method that works for the Sony X800 player it's all good in my non-expert non-professional book of life.

* I'm looking forward to Coco in 4K. The Sony X800 should ace it.
And I wouldn't go without the 3D version from overseas.

On the very rare occasion that I need clean a disc, since 1985 I've just used liquid soap and warm tap water. It's always worked for me. 99% of any discs I've ever needed to clean were rentals. I've only needed to clean a few of my own personal, CD, DVDs, and 2K BDs during the last 33 years, since I only touch the sides.. So far, out of the 170+ UHD BD titles I own, I've never needed to clean one.

If i want to let the player upscale to 4K, is there any difference between setting the player to output 4K or set it to Auto, then set Auto 2 under upscale. These settings seems redundant.

If you set the player to 4K resolution then the upscale setting is entirely redundant, yes. Even if you set 4K upscaling to off it will still upscale non-4K stuff to 4K if you've got the main output resolution set to 4K.

I have my resolution set to 4k and have turned deep colour off and also turned upscale of. As I believe these are the correct settings also when you are playing a movie if you hit the option button and go into video settings have it set to direct. And with these settings on my LG c7 bluerays look great they look almost like a 4k disc to me not much difference at all.

They are basically saying the Sony is the best 4K player for the price, which i agree, but they actually said the Oppo is THE best 4K player. If they are basing their decision purely on PQ and AQ, then i disagree. I have both the Sony X1000es and the Oppo and as long as you leave the video output unmolested, the PQ on both machines are identical on both UHD's and BD's. If there is an advantage on the Oppo upscale capabilities, i just don't see it.

So Batman Begins and Wonder Women 4K seems to freeze up on my player, Sony is sending out a new one after telling them they play fine on the X-box One S, but this close to caving and getting an Oppo.

Both the Sony and OPPO are excellent 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players. OPPO has source direct that works better then Sony's native resolution feature.


The main HDMI output on both players have the same picture and sound quality. The build quality is better on the OPPO, and the Sony has streaming features that the OPPO lacks. The reason why everyone does not purchase a OPPO UDP-203 is because of the price of $549. OPPO is the best with a massive amount of input and output ports. Sony UBP-X800 gets the reward for being the best value priced 4K Blu-ray player. The reason people choose the Sony over the OPPO has to do mainly with the price. Some people only own OPPO players, some people only own Sony, while others own a mixture of brands like OPPO in the main home theater room and the Sony in the bedroom home theater setup.

If the Sony X800 was $449 and the Oppo 203 was also $449 there would still be people buying the Sony for its apps. On sale @ only $150 the Sony increases its sales.
In some countries the Oppo 203 is four times (4x) more expensive than the Sony X800 (@ their best sale price). If you want the numbers just ask.

So yes, prices are a big decision purchase for many, then apps, and the rest of features.

Performance wise where the main priority is say to play 4K UHD Blu-ray discs, for the average majority of customers, why not save your money and with the savings buy a bunch of 4K UHD Blu-ray discs when they are on sale for between $10 and $15. ...In North America.
