The Panasonic players are excellent performing HDR > SDR ... the best.

The Sony players are excellent @ upscaling DVD and standard Blu-ray to 4K, the Panasonic players are even better.

That according to most video expert reviewers...if not all
And eddievanhalen said it too; he had the goods, the eyes, the equipment (TVs).

Yes,I have both, The Sony X-800 and the Panasonic DP-UB420 both connected to a 49",nothing big or fancy, Samsung HDR set.
As HDR can be disabled both on the Sony and Panasonic 420 one can do a direct comparison of HDR to SDR is performed by these two player, also, using different software as it's not the same converting Blade Runner 2049 with its mild use of HDR than with Pacific Rim with its agressive use of HDR. The Panasonic 420 does a good job with both, Blade Runner 2049 looks OK converted to SDR by the Sony X-800 (color looks off anyway) but Pacific Rim looks dreadful with plenty of burned highlights.
Regarding upscaling HD to 4K, the Panasonic 420 looks sharp, clear and without visible aliasing, but when the Sony X-800 does the same its HD to 4K upconversion looks soft and lacks clarity like if some kind of DNR was used, overall picture is not clear.

The pro video expert reviewers said the same as you did above and few other times previously. I'll go with you and them. The new Panasonic 4K players are the best for picture quality, and in downconverting and in upscaling.

The Sony 800 is nice, for SACD and DVD-Audio support; if you have enough of them to enjoy. ...And for streaming and for high res audio files.
And the 800M2 is even better...with Dolby Vision support.
It uses more metal, and it also costs less, than the Panasonic 820, here in North America. But in the UK the 420 is amazingly inexpensive. If North America would have the 420, Panasonic would be as big as Amazon. ...Almost

Plex media server app was never on the X800 player. You can go into the apps menu and adjust what you want to see on the main startup screen for selection.

I don't know nothing about Plex app, I'm from Canada.
But the OP is from Belgium.

And I know that you can organize your apps.
Are you from the USA, UK?

The OP asked if they removed every single app or what; Netflix, Plex, ...
In Canada Netflix is still there, YouTube had few changes, Plex I know nothing.
The apps are still there here where I live, and they are functioning.

Yeah I'm from Belgium.

I used to have the Netflix and plex apps installed. But now they are gone, also the opera tv app. Can't install anything because I don't have a 'store' to access anymore.
But from what I see above here it isn't normal

Yes, Belgium...nice place, nice people.

I would contact Sony's customer service in Europe and ask them why my apps aren't there anymore.

Cheers,

Thats a very good idea, and furthermore; after you're done, disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet and wait roughly a minute before replugging it.

Ah, nothing last forever. When it comes to apps I expect nothing tomorrow; everything changes and not necessarily for a better life.

When I did a software update yesterday, I also had to agree to an End User Agreement or my player would've been rendered useless.
I wonder what that was about?

I have a question for my fellow x800 owners. Do you guys stack any other electronics on your x800? The player is solidly built so I thought maybe I could put my Monster power conditioner on top of it since it dont throw any heat and its light. I have heard of people stacking their electronics so I wondered if it would be ok to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't really class it as a Hi-Fi separate, I don't think that having the protector on top will do much harm, but if it's fully loaded then it might be preferable to place it elsewhere.
