Sony UBP-X800 4K UHD Blu-ray player

If I were to run the 1st HDMI out to my TV directly due to my receiver not being 4k capable, and the audio HDMI out to my Yamaha receiver, will I be able to adjust audio sync in the receiver like I can when audio/video is passing through one HDMI? Because sometimes I do run into sync issues on my other players, due either to some Italian audio tracks sometimes being a bit off or my TV sometimes causing a sync delay. I though I had heard that if I run the audio and video separate I won't be able to adjust sync in the receiver.

I guess that might be correct since I wouldn't be able to access the on-screen receiver menu while viewing the video. Maybe I can switch to another input on my receiver to see the menu when adjusting, but I don't even know if the receiver will allow audio sync adjustments for audio only. Does anybody have any experience with this?

My EU Samsung 49" HDR 4K set even plays native 4K video (UHD BD or some 2160p HDR MKV's) on HDR with the X-800 player set to output RGB video which is what more bandwith takes, no problem at all handling and displaying RGB with its huge bandwith, the owner manual states that the Samsung set WON'T DISPLAY 4K 10 bit or HDR with 50/60 Hz (thus fps) on RGB and will downscale color to 8 bit but keeping video resolution. Not bad as I'm not interested on 50/60 Hz or fps 4K HDR video and neither they will become the norm, and if they do the Samsung set will display it with its full resolution on 4:2:2 component.

What happens if HDR10+ becomes more of a thing? It seems some companies are betting on that format over Dolby Vision. Since we now know the X800 won't be getting Dolby Vision (an unfortunate decision), will this player at least be able to receive an update to enable HDR10+? And how likely is Sony to actually offer that feature in an update if the player can handle it?

I wouldn't feel so bad about the lack of Dolby Vision if I thought HDR10+ was going to gain support and the x800 was capable of supporting it. I'm very tempted to grab this player at this price point to at least give it a try, but as I understand it, both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ would be a particular benefit to panels like mine that can only display a limited max nits. On the other hand, we don't know if Dolby Vision will be sticking around long-term or not anyways.

I think my LG TV either received HDR10+ in a recent update, or will be soon. I keep hearing about it in the AVS forum for my model. Or maybe that was HLG. Too many HDR formats.

This is sort of where I'm at. I'm looking into getting the TCL 55P605 TV and the Sony UBP-X800 player. My receiver, however, is an Onkyo 7.1 I bought in 2013, which supports 3D playback (HT-S5400), but doubtfully supports 4K. I can't upgrade everything all at once, so what are my options for sound that doesn't include using TV speakers?

Currently, I run my Apple TV and PS3 (used solely for BDs) to my receiver, and from the receiver to the TV, and I get fantastic sound. If I understand correctly, if I do that here, I'll lose the benefit of 4K/HDR... ?

The Sony has dual HDMI outs, you can run one directly to the TV for 4K, the second to the receiver for audio.

As clarkbar said, you can run HDMI 1 on the x800 to the TV directly, for the 4k picture, and the HDMI 2 to the receiver. HDMI 2 is specifically for sending just the audio separate to your receiver, for situations like yours (and mine).

My only question is how that affects the ability for me to adjust audio sync in my receiver. It's not uncommon for me to have sync issues with my system that I need to manually correct for in my receiver's sync menu. I don't know if running dual HDMI cables will improve the sync issues or make it more of a problem to correct.

Theoretically, that should work, but when running separate HDMI cables, I can only imagine it could become an issue. I also want to upgrade to an Apple TV, and that seems to only have one HDMI connection, so I'm not sure what I'd do there if I want non-TV sound.

I believe Oppo is the only one supporting Dolby Vision right now. I'll get back to you on the justifiable part, picking one up today. I was close to getting the Oppo, but I just can't pull the trigger on a $550 player right now.

Thanks. Im looking at their LG $99 player but it just doesn’t look too appealing and I dont think LG players are the best. I want a DV player, would a firmware update add it?

I don't think Sony plans to update it, but I'm not sure. Sounds dumb but I'm probably just gonna hang onto this one until the next gen comes out and then get one with DV enabled. It's bugging me that I have like 10-11 4k movies but no way to watch them. This one will hold me over, for now.

The LG 870/875 that's on sale for $100 is an HDR10 only player. The 970 will be on sale for $150 on BF, and that's the only one they promise to upgrade to DV.

Agreed. I'd recommend waiting for CES announcements. Hopefully next year's Sony will add DV.

I just couldn't turn down the $149.99 price tag for a SONY...So I now have a 4K Player to play my discs on.

I have had the Sony UBP-x800 for several months now and I have no complaints. If there is any noise coming from it, I don't hear it. Picture looks amazing. Set-up is a breeze. The home screen is probably my least favorite part since it looks so 'blah', but that is because my BD player was the PS3 (super cool home screen).

The Sony UBP-x800 does not support Dolby Vision. That is the only drawback I can see. I was hoping a firmware update might add it, but no luck so far. The best buy guy supposedly 'worked for Sony' and 'sony definitely would' since 'sony is the pioneer in this technology'. Yeah, sure.

Granted - there are only several DV discs out there, so it would be nice to be able to watch the DV, but you still get the HDR support with the Sony.

I have mine hooked up to an OLED B6. Looks stunning. I do not have a receiver that supports ARC or Atmos, so as described above I have one HDMI going directly to the TV, and one HDMI going to the receiver (just use whatever input is not in use and select that when watching a movie for sound). I have not had any sync issues that I have noticed.

In looking at the thread for the LG player, it seems there have been many who have sent theirs in for repair, especially due to disc noise. I was considering that player as well due to the (supposed) DV firmware update, but ultimately went with Sony due to the build and reviews.

At $150, can't go wrong with this player!

My Sammy K8500 is acting up and its giving me a difficult time with streaming and 4K titles. It loses the image for 3-4 seconds and comes back on so I am already forced to get a brand new 4K player and I'm eyeing this one despite the fact it has no DV.

That's music to my ears. I can get a 4K player or I can get a 4K receiver -- the budget won't allow for both -- so that leads me to believe I can get a player now and buy a receiver down the line.

Remember now that purchases made from Best Buy now through Christmas can be returned until Jan 14th, and from Amazon until Jan 31st. That gives plenty of time to put this thing through it's paces.
