Any thoughts on the 4K-upscaling of 1080p content of this player? I recently upgraded to 4K and own this UHD player. Thought I'd watch Rogue One last night but found it to be soft and rather smeary. I have it set on Auto 2. I'd read Auto 1 is only used in conjunction with Sony displays.
Luckily, I also bought a region-modded 4K-upscaling BD player (the Panasonic DMP-BDT360) for playback of my Region B discs. I tried Rogue One on it and its upscaling blew the X800 out of the water. Looked damn good and nearly 4K. So is the X800's upscaling just shit? Looks like some automatic noise reduction is applied. I'd read that was common on some of Sony's earlier 4K-upscaling BD players, but figured they must have fixed that by now due to poor reviews. Any thoughts? |

![]() The player upscaling quality is excellent but you may have the wrong settings. First of all some people seem to have the misconception that upscaling produces an improved image, that is nonsense. No upscaling will ever generate detail that is not there to start with. Upscaling is the process of adding extra pixels to fill the screen otherwise a 1080 picture on a 4k display will appear 1/4 of the size. Those extra pixels are just the same pixels you already have but replicated. Some players do that process better than others but that's all there is, You don't get a 4k quality image and the bigger the screen the more noticeable this will be, in a 55" you may not notice but 75 and over it will start being obvious. What TV are you using? If you want the sharpest output from this player make sure the video is set on "direct". Keep in mind the inputs of many tv will store different settings for every HDMI so make sure the HDMI (on the tv) for the panasonic has the same settings as the one for the sony. You may have the sony one with the noise reducion on and the other in off. Same with sharpness, they could be set at different levels. |

You have chosen to ignore those responses that are all over this thread, please yourself, but at this rate while you keep avoiding, worrying and posting about your fears, this player is going to be discontinued, may be the next model might please you better. |

According to the last couple comments in here, along with others, it seems the upscaling is questionable due to possible DNR issues, just like other Sony players. And I continue to hear a lot of comments in here about freezing issues. Just because you don't have issues with the player doesn't mean others don't or won't. |

As I've said, if it makes you happy, its fine with me, just ignore any responses that don't say what you want to hear. Particularly, feel free to ignore any posts that may indicate which setting to change to disengage the three DNR types (which are also adjustable) provided by this player as a default factory setting. |

For out of the box DV you need to buy an Oppo which is a very good player but a lot more expensive. |

I just picked one of these up on a Black Friday sale. I'm going to use it with my 55" Sony 4K tv in my office/den. I just wanted to be able to play some of the 4K movies I've been buying in anticipation of upgrading my theater room projector to a 4K. My Sony 4K tv does a great job scaling DVD's and BD movies so I'll just leave the 800 to output the native resolution of the disc that's playing.

What brand is your TV set? Mine is an European model Samsung and its upscaling literally TROUNCES the X-800 upscaling. And I don't think my Samsung set may be doing right the opposite, that is oversharpennig video to make it look fakely sharper.

I've finally opened the US region A player I have, here you have a photo for your viewing pleasure.
It is certainly a very solid, well built player. I don't recommend anyone to open it unless you know what you are doing as it wasn't very straight forward to open, please don't ask me how as I hardly remember. It also seems no matter how small I make the picture it is still too big to post directly on the forum. since I don't have good editing software on this computer you'll have to click the link, sorry!
