Is no DV that big of a deal? I am about to jump into the 4K game but if DV is something that is better than HDR10 and will stick then I don't want to get a player without it.

Transformers are inherently noisy device and so are the rectifier diode bridge used to convert AC into DC.

I do agree with you in the power plug. I dont like them either because they usually take more real a state on the power bar than a normal plug.
Its debatable about ENR, yes I seen bricks come both as linear, and mostly now switch type, and a lot of them have fairly lengthy cords exiting the package. Most are used by devices where noise and interference is not a issue, as this player has probably little in the way of sensitive analog circuitry. I dislike DC power jacks as consumers just bend the center pins and break the female connector. I was thinking of the familiar tight bundling of power cords where 2 to 5 feet of a power adapter cord was in close proximity of AC cords.

More than half. Two times 1.4kg is 2.8kg
The X800 is 3.8kg
So, almost three times, minus roughly one pound.
3.1lbs (X700) versus 8.4lbs (X800)

* The Oppo 203 is 9.5lbs (4.3kg)

1. Oppo 205 > 22lbs, 1oz
2. Oppo 203 > 9lbs, 8oz
3. Sony 800 > 8lbs, 7oz
4. Sony 700 > 3lbs, 1oz
_____

The overall new trend of the future is lightweight for our audio/video electronics.
...TVs (very thin, very light), 4K Blu-ray players (smaller size, plastic and very light), AV receivers (40 pounds are the heavy ones now, many are around 35 pounds for the flagships; in the past we had 50, 55, 65, 70, 75 and even 95 pounds for a flagship receiver).

Are we putting weight to our weights? I sure do, @ 200 pounds plus I'm too heavy.

Gross because to me it looks ugly compared to the sleek design of the x800. At least in my opinion.

"Dolby Vision is theoretically designed to go much, much further—way beyond the capabilities of today's TVs, even. That creates some major differences between the two: Dolby Vision mastering supports up to 10,000 nits peak brightness, with a current 4,000 nit peak brightness target."
____

The way I see it today: It's a feature game, a number game. Dolby Vision is far from reaching its full potential in the year 2018. Today I wouldn't put too much importance, tomorrow in few years...we'll see. But today Dolby is collecting licencing fees and royalties from the Dolby Vision's logo name. It's the name of the business; like DACs, like weights, like 8K, like 3D, like gold, like bitcoin, ...

This is my opinion, today.

Note: I will also add this...Dolby Atmos is a great audio feature; but to be exclusive of 4K UHD Blu-ray discs is an insult to regular Blu-ray discs, 2D and 3D. IMO it's an aggressive attitude that we can do without. I'm all for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X ... all across the board, not just 4K exclusivity.

So mine just arrived from Massdrop and WOW it's larger than I was expecting. Was gonna put this below the 55" 4K HDR display I use at my computer desk but it probably won't fit next to my amp and external disc drive.

I'm excited to finally try out the HDR on the display though! Still haven't upgraded my PC to one that can output HDR.

Depends, if you have a TV that can display DV then you should get a player that does too. If your TV cannot display DV then you won't miss it.

To that Dolby Atmos part, some regular 2D Blu-rays do feature Dolby Atmos, we've actually been seeing more regular Blu-rays in the last few years having Dolby Atmos support.

Me I am seeing less and less. ...On both HD 3D Blu-ray discs, and also on regular HD 1080p Blu-ray discs.

The new Sony X700:

• DVD-AUDIO: No
• CERTIFIED HI-RES AUDIO: No
• DSEE HX: No
• BLUETOOTH®: No

* Few features that it's losing over the X800.
It does retain 3D though. ...And the two HDMI output jacks.

I've misplaced my optical cable so I can't connect it to my amp and have to use the built-in TV speakers. Oof. Also the backlight is absolute garbage on my Samsung in HDR; I'm glad to have FALD in my main Vizio display and will only go FALD in the future. Bright black bars are unacceptable but otherwise Blade Runner looks great.

I'll probably move this player to my main Vizio display though.

The X800 does not use an optical cable it has a Coaxial Audio Output.

I have X800, but was thinking of getting the Apple TV also. Do you find it has enough channels on it that aren't on the X800 to make it worth buying?

You can use a composite video cable as a coaxial cable. We all have those in our cable drawers.

Default Some differences between the 2017 Sony UBP-X800 and the 2018 Sony UBP-X700

Some differences between the 2017 Sony UBP-X800 and the 2018 Sony UBP-X700

The new 2018 Sony UBP-X700 has not been released yet, therefore there is no professional review or end user to compare the two players. However one can get a fairly accurate estimate of the differences between the two 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players by comparing the player specs.

The only major advantage of the Sony UBP-X700 is that the hardware is capable of playing back 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs that are encoded with Dolby Vision HDR (Sony promises to offer a Dolby Vision HDR firmware update, possible around the Summer of 2018 they might release a firmware update to make Dolby Vision HDR playback possible).

However according to the existing specs on the Sony website, the Sony UBP-X800 is a better 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player for audiophiles, since the UBP-800 plays back both Super Audio CD’s and DVD-Audio discs. While the Sony UBP-X700 does also playback SACD’s with DSD output, the problem is according to the existing spec sheet on the Sony website the UBP-X700 does not playback DVD-Audio discs. The Sony UBP-X700 might offer better compatibility with BD-RE and BD-RE dual layer discs since those discs are official mentioned in the specs but are not mentioned in the specs for the UBP-X800 (however most BD-RE and BD-RE dual layer discs should playback fine on all modern Blu-ray players even if those discs are not official mentioned in the spec sheet).

The Sony UBP-X800 has a list price of $299.99 and can sometimes be found on sale for $149.99 with free shipping (The Sony UBP-X800 might be out of production but that would need to be verified and is only a theory). The Sony UBP-X700 in theory will have a list price lower than the UBP-X800, but it is unknown what that USA list price will be. However just because the new model has a lower list price does not mean that player is a better player. There is evidence that the Sony UBP-X700 has a lower build quality when compared to the Sony UBP-X800 (for example there is evidence that the power supply is lower quality on the new UBP-X700). The UBP-X800 has a standard AC outlet with a built in AC to DC transformer inside the Blu-ray player. However, the UBP-X700 instead uses an external AC to DC wall style transformer that is normally found on lower end Blu-ray players. The only advantages I see to the Sony UBP-X700 external power supply is that the power plug can be unplugged from the Blu-ray player and replaced if the power cord were to get damaged by the consumer, and also for people that own boats and campers they can get an optional 12 volt universal DC cigarette lighter adapter that plugs directly into the back of the Blu-ray player. Both players have the exact same quality connection jacks like 100Mbps Ethernet, front USB 2.0, coaxial audio, and two HDMI outputs.

Those that own or who plan on getting a 4K Ultra HD display with built in Dolby Vision HDR, would be better off getting either the OPPO UDP-203 or getting the new Sony UBP-700 that promises the Dolby Vision HDR feature with a future firmware update. However for those people that own a 1080P display or a 4K Ultra HD display with no Dolby Vision HDR, then they might prefer the Sony UBP-800 since it plays DVD-Audio discs (The current specs for the UBP-700 does not list DVD-Audio playback).

I know family members that own both the OPPO UDP-203 with Dolby Vision HDR and they also own the Sony UBP-X800. Since their two Sony UBP-X800’s will be connected to displays without Dolby Vision HDR, these family members have no plans on switching out their players until they upgrade their display to one that offers the Dolby Vision HDR feature.

The Panasonic DP-UB820 also will get a Dolby Vision firmware update.
...Another alternative to Dolby Vision addicts.
