Also running the Sony network connection diagnostic test shows everything is working. However on two separate Sony UBP-X800’s, when I try and check for a firmware update over the internet I get the following message pop up on the screen:

“Update via Internet: Connection status cannot be confirmed. Cannot communicate with server. Please try again later.”

Therefore either the Sony automated firmware update server that the Sony UBP-X800 accesses has been down for around a day, or there is some kind of bug that needs to be fixed in the Sony UBP-X800 automated Internet firmware update process.

I have used 2010 model Blu-ray players before where the automated firmware update process works flawlessly. Almost 8 years later and I cannot even get a firmware update on a higher end model Sony Blu-ray player using the players automated firmware update application (After several hours of trying, one out of two players did download the update, but then after the update got the same message “Cannot communicate with the server”, instead of getting a message that one already has the latest firmware update installed).

On one Sony UBP-X800 I could never get the firmware to download, therefore I had to go to Sony’s support website and manually download that latest firmware which is M36.R.0178 that was released on 9-26-2017. However after successfully installing the firmware from a USB stick, when I check for a software update from the players menu, I still am getting the message that the player cannot connect to the server, instead of getting a message that the latest firmware update is already installed.

I am in shock that this problem is occurring on a 2017 model Blu-ray player. Either Sony is having problems with the update server on their end, or there is some type of software bug in the player’s ability to check for a firmware update over a wired connection (And again both players work fine for all the streaming applications). I guess this is one reason people stick with OPPO and Panasonic Blu-ray players since the update process works fine (however even $50 Sony Blu-ray players work fine for automated firmware updates). So far it appears all the other features on the Sony UBP-X800 works flawlessly.
Can you stream Netflix 4K Dolby Atmos where you are with your Sony X800 player?

With the Roku Ultra I can stream 4K Ultra HD with lossy Dolby Atmos on VUDU only. Had problems with the Roku Ultra showing Netflix 4K titles (a known bug), so was not able to try that. I have not tested the Sony X800 and Netflix 4K yet. However it appears VUDU on the Sony is only 1080P and they have not launched a 4K VUDU app for the Sony yet. I am still planning on testing streaming when I get time, I am more interested in how the Sony performs with optical discs (so far flawless with optical discs).

Until this problem is fixed by Sony, I found what appears to be a work around to the problem. If one unplugs the power cord to the UBP-X800, and then several hours later plugs the power cord back in. Then as soon as one turns on the Blu-ray player and selects software update over the Internet, the Sony UBP-X800 will successfully connect to the Sony server and say something like “Already updated”. However if one goes back into the software update over the Internet application a second time, the error message “Update via Internet: Connection status cannot be confirmed. Cannot communicate with server. Please try again later,” occurs again. Now if one unplugs the Blu-ray player for 10 minutes and plugs it back in the same error message occurs. The Sony UBP-X800 power cord has to be unplugged for several hours and then plugged back in for the automated firmware update feature to work again. However, it will only work one time during a small window, and then after that one has to unplug their player for several hours before trying again.

It appears the Sony automated firmware update server might have some type of IP blocking occurring, where it might only allow someone from the same IP address to access the server once every few hours or so. Some people own more than one Sony Blu-ray player on the same IP address. The other possibility is that the Sony UBP-X800 automated software update programming code is all messed up, and is some how stopping people from connecting to the firmware update server. What every is causing this issue, this problem needs to be fixed.

I have been having problems with my x800. It has been doing this thing where I come back to my entertainment center and the green light is on, but the system is not responding. I had previously left the unit switched off. No amount of button presses or holding down the power button results in any sort of response. The TV screen is black. The last time this happened I pulled the power plug and reset it, and it lost all of its internet and user settings. Could it be auto-updating or something? What in the world is this machine doing to turn the green light on by itself but yet it remains unresponsive.

I have the UPB-X800 playing through my Denon receiver into a Sony 75x900e. A friend of mine, who is a professional calibration tech for one of the networks was over performing a calibration (in the Custom mode). After he finished, we were looking at the Wonder Woman 4K disc. It did look pretty good, but.....read on.

As an experiment, we did the following. While leaving the HDR setting on the TV to Auto, we turned off the HDR setting in the X800 player and were surprised to see a marked difference, for the better, in the picture quality of the playback. The daytime scenes, especially on the island appeared more vibrant with the HDR setting in the player set to off. The nighttime scenes also appeared much sharper with the blacks showing a much deeper black with the player setting off. With the player's HDR setting to Auto, the blacks in the nighttime scenes appear to have a slightly grayer quality to them which appears to wash out the entire frame slightly, just enough to show a difference. The blacks are not as deep and rich with the player's HDR setting on Auto as they are when the setting is on Off. The overall image just seemed to have a richer quality to it in both daytime and nighttime scenes. Night really looks like night as opposed to night with a slight grayish tint to it.

Again, we did not touch the HDR setting on the TV, just the player. TV was left on Auto. I am wondering if it is better to leave the player setting off and let the TV's HDR setting in auto do the work? Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon?

If you set HDR to OFF on the player you are getting an SDR BT.709 signal instead of HDR BT.2020

Honestly I would be considering a Panasonic UHD player when it's time to purchase one this year but they are so expensive. I can't afford it. They're as expensive as the Oppos. Panasonic needs to bring their players down to a more approachable level. I own multiple Pansonic blu-rays players and they are nice, and it seems their UHD players will support multiple HDR formats. I was hoping the Sony x700 would be the answer but it's already apparent they're cheapening the build quality, dropping some playback functionality, and on top of that they're going to take their sweet time giving us a Dolby Vision update, with no mention of HDR10+.

For once I'd love to see a company do what's best for the consumer. Because in the end it would also be what's best for them.

Yep, I noticed that about the 700. One thing about the x800 is that it's built like a tank.

Yes, my tech friend and I discussed that when we were experimenting the other night. I just thought it was curious about the PQ that I noted in my post when the HDR on the player was off. I must add that I have not looked at any other 4K discs with the HDR off. I watched Blade Runner (1982) on 4K the other night, with the HDR on and thought it was the best looking 4K I've seen to date and that includes having watched Dunkirk in 4K. Blade Runner was superb. Anxiously waiting to see what Blade Runner 2049 will look like when I get it next week.

This one is affordable, very, when on sale:
http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/ub400-201704134454.htm
https://www.pocket-lint.com/tv/revie...fordable-price

I bet you can find it for around $149-199 (I'm not sure if it's available in the USA).
But the Sony you can also find for $149, and even $129.

I own Panasonic Blu-ray players and they are excellent. However I most likely will stick with OPPO and Sony because of the SACD and DVD-Audio support (The X700 dropped DVD-Audio). It would be nice if one day Panasonic would start supporting the legacy SACD and DVD-Audio format. For the price of their players they should.

PaulGo if you have 3 Sony UBP-X800's and you can update them all at the same time and are not getting the error message, then it might be a problem occurring in certain areas of the country. Maybe Sony routes traffic to different servers on the east or west coast. All I know is the problem is real and is being experienced by several Sony owners. Its a frustrating problem since the first thing one does when purchasing a new Blu-ray player is to check for the latest firmware update. I am sure some consumers after not being able to connect to the Sony automated update server, returned their player and purchase a different brand of Blu-ray player, or purchased a Roku Ultra or DVD player instead.

I think if you do that, then the player won't upscale BD's.
