I have a bunch of players with a USB port on the front, with and without doors, and none I can close the door when connecting a stick to it. An extra port on the back is nice, but the 800 has none. The Oppo 203/205 has two on the rear, and they are both blue...version 3.0

It's also nice when the USB port(s) is 5Volts/1Amp ... for a powerless external hard drive of two terabytes. The 800 is 500mA; I don't know if it can handle one terabyte powerless external hard drive....I wouldn't push it. No way. ...A stick with 256GB ok, and the door left open.

But it's a powered one, with its own power cord?

No. It's USB 3.0 with no external power needed. This is why I bought 3 of them.

And the Sony X800 has no problem powering that 5TB hard drive?
I just learned something new today, I'll be able to connect my external hard drives to the Sony player too, and not just to my Oppos. Awesome, thx.

* Sony makes no mention of this anywhere. ...From a cordless (non-powered) hard drive.

That's correct. They are the 5TB portable Seagate drives.

I was afraid to brick my Sony player by plugging a non-powered external hard drive (2TB) to its front USB port. I am no more afraid now, you people erased my fear, thank you kindly very much big bunch.

There is no way you are going to be able to close that door, the smallest USB 3.0 Ultra Fit drives are still not thin enough to close that front door. I used a 64GB Ultra Fit model number SDCZ43-064G-GAM46 and I placed black electrical tape over the flashing LED light so it cannot be seen in the dark. Its a cosmetic issue people either need to live with or go purchase a OPPO UDP-203 for $549.

However I do agree Sony on future Blu-ray players needs at least one rear USB 3.0 port. A front USB port is handy to plug in a USB keyboard or brief temp USB drive.

Try it, do it several times and observe the onscreen image shifting.

Also, on a 3D BR rolling credits @ the end, with white titles appearing and disappearing, the black level is changing/pulsating from dark black to grey to dark black and so on.
That was from 'Assassin's Creed'.
Update:

'Assassins Creed' 3D Blu-ray (Fox studios) has a pop up menu that screws all 3D Blu-ray players. It is a Fox issue, and not a player issue. When you use the pop up menu it disables the 3D program...It switches to 2D, unlike other studios with their pop up menus. FOX studios need to get on with the program. How many years still they need to fix something that other studios have no issue with for the last eight years?

And for the rolling credits, with black level changing, it is no more there after few video setting changes.

All is good with the 800...even Netflix. Picture quality and sound quality through the HDMI connections are the equal of the Oppo 205. I cannot tell the superiority of one over the other from those aspects of system reproduction.

For analog the Oppo 205 is clearly superior, 100% superior (the 800 has zero analog jacks).
But I did not check with the Sony 1000ES machine; I wanted no display in my secondary room from a 4K player; the 800 was one fitting that bill.
_____

The 800 lowest price was $129 ...that is pretty good for a Universal 4K Blu-ray player.
Sure, you can buy a LG 870 for only $49 when on sale, but without apps.
Or, if you want Dolby Vision, your options this year are ...

Life's good with Sony.

Also, there are plenty of USB sticks without flashing lights, but we knew that.
If Sony would add another USB port on the rear (version 3.0), it would be real swell, without charging more for it. ...Not in the new X700 coming up.

* The X1000ES (Elevated Standard series) has no USB port on its rear.

For the asking price on this player, Sony should have included an USB port on the back or at least some persistent memory built in like the Oppo. I think that and the lack of DV support is what's keeping that player for being perfect.

I decided to turn off the 4K upscale on the player. I was definitely losing detail in picture quality on Blu-rays. I'm letting my Samsung 4K TV do the upscaling.

Picture drastically improved for regular Blu-rays. Before it definitely felt like the picture was smeared with auto1 or auto2. My eyes were hurting because I was squinting thinking my contacts were out of focus.

Since turning off the upscaling, my Blu-rays looks crisp and clear. Still love the player

Exactemente, and it's easy to put a nice sticker on the little light. But the light is not annoying anyway. And you can also position it the way you like...that external hard drive. The primary best position of a USB port is . . . on the front face. And when not in use; with that door closed from getting the dust entering the home. "Close that door!" "Yes Mom." Oppo, no door.

Bonus: "Close the fridge's door, you let the cold escape and the energy gone to waste!" "Yes Mom, I just need to select the stuff to make myself a super combo sandwich." :-) /// "Did Dad bought dill pickles and red radish?" ;-D

Question: The Sony X800...Dolby Vision updateable? {-) ...Say Spring 2018? ]-)

* I decipher the meaning of Villeneuve's Blade 2049.

Say you connect a 5TB hard drive to the front USB port; can you live without another USB port on the rear, and can you get some persistent additional storage from that 5TB hard drive?

* The Sony X800, when it first came up was $299 MSRP. Then they offered two 4K Blu-ray titles...free. Today the X800 retails for $249, and on sale it went to $199 and even to $149 (someone even mentioned $129) ... that is incredibly affordable for the videophile and audiophile community @ large shopping for a universal 4K disc player.
Sure it's not Primus from Transformers...like the Oppo 203 and all the jazz that comes with it. But $149 versus $549 is a $400 difference. $400 can buy you a few 4K BR titles on sale @ say ten bucks a piece on Black Friday...40 titles to be exact. ...Or 20 4K titles @ $20 a piece, from the top best looking selections, like Lucy and The Shallows and King Kong and The Revenant and Sicario and Blade Runner and Unforgiven and The Bridge over the River Kwai ...

Five years from now the Oppo 203/205 will still be spinning discs.
And I bet the Sony 800 will too.
Me I won't though, I'll be spinning LPs with a brand new TT.

Different sites different eyes different taste. Oblivion on Blu-ray looks splendid.
It doesn't on 4K?
