Default A Few Pointers

My recently purchased X800 has been hassle-free (for $115 from BestBuy thanks to a sale/coupon) when combined with my Vizio via a Denon, but my Dad picked up the X800 at launch, and he experienced many of the issues cited here and elsewhere when directly connected to a Sony 900E. He returned it once, and although the second was less problematic, he still experienced issues.

With the last FW upgrade and following tips, his X800 is as stable as mine:
  1. Plug into an outlet, and not a surge protector.
  2. Place X800 on it's own shelf/space, and not on top/bottom with another device.
  3. Turn off Bluetooth when not using/permanently.
  4. Wipe discs before play.

The other issue is that the player should be set to Direct, and 4K Upscaling turned off as it often, but not always, exhibited poor results when compared to non-processed 1080p content for our 4K sets (Vizio P/Sony 900E).

Something isn't $115 just because you used reward certs. It was $150 or $200.

I haven't been having problems with my replacement unit yet which is great. So far I have been able to keep the internet connected, the HDMI power-control 'on', and the Quick Start Mode 'on' without any issues. It sounds like these are the options to turn off if you are having problems with your set.

The only odd thing that has happend so far is the player turned on automatically once when I powered on the TV. But again, that goes hand-in-hand with the HDMI power-on control issues which you can just turn off. Fingers crossed that it keeps working well because its an awesome set when everything is working.

Not plugging you equipment into a quality surge protector is bad advice.

Well, I'm just telling you what works, and while I agree it's a risk to run it without, you could alway try a different brand of surge protector. My Dad was using a full-up Amazon Basic; perhaps a more expensive surge protector or less populated SP is the ticket if you are experiencing issues with the X800, or, just return it.

Personally, I'm running it with a surge protector, and it's solid.

Sometimes a fancy surge protector can do more harm than good.
I bought an Eaton single socket surge protector with Electro Magnetic Interference rejection for my tube Phono preamp. I always had a hard time getting the right combination of 12AX7 tubes so the Phono preamp doesn't hum (it's not the usual design where one tube amps one channel, on mine V1 does main amp of both channels, V2 handles RIAA de-eq and does some more amp, V3 is used as a "buffer tube" to keep impedance low and reduce distorsion). One day I removed the Eaton surge protector with EMI rejection and hum was gone no matter the combination of tubes I put on it.
I then put the Eaton surge protector on my A/V receiver (Pioneer SC LX-76) and it limited it power output so it compressed dinamic range and led to some distorsion with high level signals. Needless to say I took it away.

Update on my previous post.

I just received a new one from amazon and plugged it up and popped in my Man From Nowhere Blu Ray and this time it loaded up and played fine. I went towards the end of the movie and it was running fine and then it started again. Freezing, skipping, and then just stopped. I took out the disc and again mint. I cleaned it just to see and it worked a little bit but then froze again. At this point I don’t know. The player is a good player for the price and I thought I had a home run for a inexpensive 4K player that also plays 3D but this experience puts a real sour taste in my mouth. I have played that movie a dozen times on my old Panasonic and it works like mint. I know I am making a big deal over one movie that does not work (that I know off, I did try my other foreign movies and they worked). I have checked else where and no issues are being reported about it so I am in minority. Anyways thought I give you my update.

I am with my x800 and plex from a PC. Although I am using the network browser in the x800 to view the folders I have in plex. Then I need to also use wifi with my x800 to be able to play the 100Mbps+ UHD files. Since the wired connection is only 100BT. But with the wifi connection I have no problem with 130Mbps UHD bitrate files playing smoothly. While the wired connection would constantly buffer or stutter with the high bitrate uhd files.

Just chimming in to say that I've watched about 25 UHD blu-rays in the last 2 weeks and had only 3 issues so far:

- Dunkirk: Sound cutting in two spots (and it ALWAYS cut in these two scenes). This occurs only when using Output as PCM. I can't use auto for that movie because my sound system doesn'T support DTS

- While watching Deadpool, the playback was choppy (like if it was at 20 fps). I turned it off and back again and it was ok. Never occured again and I'm pretty sure it's not deadpool related.

- Froze and pixelated during The Dark Knight (lamborghini scene) . again I closed it down and restart and no issue afterwards.

Played quietly and flawlessly for every other time (and I've watched some movies more than once). So bottom line, I find the player pretty reliable, especially for the half price I paid during boxing day.

Any news on when a new firmware update might be released? Is there some kind of news site or blog or something for Sony which might have information or am I living in a dream land?

I just check the Sony page once a month. If there is a new firmware, I download it and wait to see what issues may appear.

First time user question!!

Recently received my new x800 today. All plugged in with the necessary hdmi and everything. Turn it on and update it. Before playing one of my 4k discs (revenant), I check the output. 4k 30hz. the right output, if I'm correct.

The problem. Once I start playing the 4k disc it switches over to 1080 and 24hz. The menu and movie all play at 1080 instead of 4k. I don't know if it's a setting on the player that I need to alter to have it output in the right resolution or if it might be something else...?

I haven't tried streaming yet through the player. So wouldn't be able to say at this moment if that is also a problem. Maybe it won't. I'll have an update later today..

This forum has been very helpful to me and would love some help here! Thanks!!

May sound like a stupid question but, are you sure you put in the UHD, and not the BD? I ask because it happens to people now n then. If that's not the problem, then I would check to make sure your tv is set to HDMI 2.0. If you're still having problems, then read over the owner's manual carefully. Hope you get your problem solved.

It can also happen when using a 1080p TV.
