Hi,

I have recently bought the Sony UBP-X800. Dunkirk is AMAZING on OLED LG E6 55.
But i have a situation. The 4K UHD disk doesn't have portuguese subtitles(the blu-ray has). For me is fine but for the wife is tricky.
Is there anyway to embed subtitles or will i have to change wife?

Not for the UHD since drives are still in their infancy along with the beefy CPUs needed to support them.

Soooooo wife it is.

That's a "shame". Because the product information for subtitles(Amazon included) doesn't always provide subtitle information or all subtitles included.
Anyway how can we achieve that info? Go the source maybe?

P.S Oppo is the only one?

Not on this standalone player. If you have the right equipment and can rip the discs on your PC, you can play back the movies on a PC and add subs via the VLC player or other methods. That's your only real option.

I love the image on this player but I am getting multiple freeze ups. Not so much during playback but the player becomes un responsive. Already in one month I have to unplug the unit to get it to work again.

I get freeze ups during you tube streaming as well.

Default Sony UBP-X800 4K UHD Blu-ray player

I've had Sony players for a very long time and one thing about Sony is that sometimes it will take them a long time to acknowledge a problem and fix it. They haven't release any firmware for this player since last September but i'm sure they will eventually release one and fix the freezing issue. They always comes through even though they take their sweet time.

Maybe the issues are from the apps interfering with the good operation of the machine?

That is a strong posibility. I was having frequent freezing on my 1000es and haven't had any since disconnecting it from the internet.

A family member that I know uses this Sony UBP-X800 for both optical discs and streaming, and they are not having any problems with the player locking up when playing Blu-ray discs. They sometimes use it everyday and no issues so far.

The new Oppos they let go of the apps, making some people sad, but also making some happy.
There is a huge market for streaming 4K UHD HDR10 Dolby Vision Atmos Dts:X
The other market, the niche, they spin discs, 3D Blu-rays, 2D Blu-rays, DVDs, and 4K Blus. ...And the music discs of course...CDs, SACDs, DVD Audio and Blu-ray Audio.

Between there are digital copies, audio files, video files, ...

Sony$ strategy is add a new player, very light, small, but with improved apps and Dolby Vision ready.
The X1000ES and X800 become unsupported, unfortunately. It's a tough life...hard to stick with only one 4K player. And the same for projector's owners, and the same for flat panels supporting Dolby Vision, and the learning that nothing last forever in this fast changing and imperfect technological movie world. There is no time to adapt; as soon you start to, comes something newer and bigger. As times advances we also discover the flaws from yesterday. It's almost as we can predict the future better, even before manufacturers release their next products. E.g.; the new Marantz pre/pro and new Denon flagship receiver. But who would have predicted that Oppo would abandon apps in their players? Certainly not me.

Anyway, Sony with its first 4K players...1000 and 800...is now moving towards a new direction with its 700. For better? Maybe for Sony but for the 1000 and 800 owners it's a let down. If you stay and your TV wants DV, you're going to miss some. That, when and if Dolby Vision takes a major role in improving our 4K Dolby Vision Blus experience. ...Like in quality and in selections.
But Sony is not alone, Panasonic too is coming up with the DV engine...the 820.
So the owners of the 900 and 700 what are they going to do.? I'm not sure, for projector' s owners no problem, but Dolby Vision flat panel TVs out there you want a DV machine.

C'est la vie, times marches on and we move on...we make our choices, we stick with them or we make new ones. Tough to stick with only one player...Oppo is certainly ahead of the curve here.

Then that would disqualify the apps as the issue.

The home network is 100% wired 1Gbps. Perhaps people are having problems with the WI-FI causing lock ups when streaming.

I'm not sure if this problem has already been resolved, but I thought it was worth signing up to the forum to help anyone finding themselves as frustrated as I was!

I've had the Sony UBP-X800 for about a month and I absolutely love it, but 4K UHD discs never really 'wowed' me - in fact, my regular Blu-rays often looked a lot more colourful.

Now, my television is a Sony Bravia KD55XE7003 which I've also had for about a month. It's not a top of the range 4K telly but it's still capable of producing a lovely image. 4K videos on the built-in YouTube app look gorgeous, for example.

Anyway, I realised last night that every time I stick in a 4K UHD disc, the television is switching over to a dedicated HDR mode. No problem, right? Wrong - because this mode is stripping the image of its colour! It's hard to describe; the image is still highly detailed, but everything looks slightly grey and washed out.

Further exacerbating the problem, pressing 'OPTIONS' on the main TV remote was opening the options for the UBP-X800 player itself, NOT the television. It was definitely a HDR content issue too, as turning HDR off completely via the player menu returned the colours to their usual brightness and colour (albeit without the loveliness of HDR, which the Sony Bravia KD55XE7003 is capable of).

I didn't want to watch all my 4K discs without HDR, so I spent about 3 hours fiddling and finally discovered that you can still access your Sony TV picture options when the UBP-X800 is powered on!

Simply press the small button (near the top on my remote) labelled SYNC MENU and you can then scroll down and select the television. From there, I went into picture settings and found that my TV had two default profiles when in HDR mode - Standard and Vivid. Standard was the one always coming on by default - oddly grey and washed out. I selected Vivid - a setting I would never use on the regular channels or my PlayStation 4 Pro - and voila! The colours now look the way they should. This setting has stuck too, so it switches to HDR Vivid whenever I play a 4K UHD (HDR) disc, but this doesn't impact the picture when playing regular Blu-rays (which already looked great).

The only other small change I made was to raise the contrast a bit on the player itself, but I can now say I am very pleased with the picture quality. Sorry for the long post, I just thought this might be helpful - and interesting - for people with the same problem! I have no idea why the default setting is so washed out, but HDR Vivid looks great - and of course you can always tinker with the picture settings further if you want a more tailored image. I will probably experiment more with the settings tonight.

I can atleast say my player was not doing this freeze because of UHD disc as I played a used DVD wile the former freeze happened. So it can be caused by other things than plainly UHD playback.

Sony is the better and one of the best UHD players available.
