Oh i live in the USA too. But I've always had the 24p setting on "off" with all my players. Just what I'm used to I guess.

I could kiss you. This seems to have fixed the issue. Turned it off and now both discs I was having repeat audio mutes with play fine.

I got a replacement from Sony in the mail today. It's new, and not refurbished. Still stutters like mad while trying to watch Dunkirk. Pretty much rules out a bad batch of players early on. As I suspected, I'm pretty certain it's a firmware thing.

Ah well, it was worth a shot.

Can you be more specific on why you would prefer a different frame rate than what the director intended?

Sometimes having the 24fps on does something funky with the sync. That all depends on the hardware, though, and how it's all communicating.

That's great news, thx to Geoff. Sony's default setting for this very important feature is wrong.
It's the most important manual setting change that all owners of this player ought to do.
What were they thinking I'm sure they were sleeping.

With their new little baby, the X700, the default setting for this function is now the correct one. I guess they heard from the owners the pain with all the returns. If you build electronics @ least set the default settings to their proper selection.

[BD Audio MIX Setting] = [Off]

This ^ is the correct audio setting.

Just what I'm used to. Not trying to offend the director or anything. And as I said, having the 24p setting "on" has given me quite the headache. Maybe I'll try it again soon.

Just leave it on Auto, it's the correct setting. ...Both the [Output Video Resolution] and the [24p Output].

I'm watching The Wolverine on Blu-ray right now and it looks great. I really only notice it a little during slower moments. Can't tell during action scenes.
The soap opera effect is caused by motion interpolation. Not by frames being repeated. To go from 24 fps to120 the frames are repeated using 5:5 pull-down. 24 to 240 uses 10:10 pull-down. Only when you insert new info in between the existing frames, which is what motion interpolation does, is when you get the SOE. Repeating the same frames five or ten times does not cause the soap opera effect.

Got my replacement about a week ago. Still shuts off after like 10-20 mins of inactivity which is annoying. Their tech support claims it doesn't do this. I thought maybe it was the TV or AVR but it's not.

The solution just below:

Quote:
"Can anyone confirm if the "auto-power-off" feature can be disabled/turned OFF so the player will stay fully powered ON even if it sits idle for a while."

"No it can't.

However, its probably worth mentioning the "secret" workaround. If you never want the player to turn off on its own there is one thing you can do. You need to insert a USB thumb drive into the player and the player should remain on."

For some reason, my copy of Dunkirk doesn't pass HDR any more to my LG OLED C7 TV.

I have tried other movies and I get the "HDR" icon in the top right which appears briefly, however when I stick in Dunkirk, it just remains on SDR, same input channel (HDMI 1) obviously.

I have gone through the menus on the Sony X800, nothing obvious sticks out as being incorrect.

Any ideas why one film doesn't "do" HDR any more?

PS, I tried moving the player to HDMI 2 and same story. So it looks like an issue with the player or maybe the disc, who knows.

Thanks.

I have the X1000es which should have the same exact firmware, and Dunkirk plays fine from begining to end, and I have played that movie at least 3 times. Perhaps your disc is bad?

I thought so too, except it plays 100 percent fine in my Xbox One X.

Is there a way to reset the player back to factory defaults?

Under Settings scroll to the bottom under [Resetting]

x [Reset to Factory Default Settings]
Resets the player settings to the factory
default by selecting the group of settings. All
the settings within the group will be reset.

Let me know what you think. I find that anything other than 24fps for native 24fps causes jutter and/or motion blurring depending on the display.
