I finally got a chance to play with this thing last night, doing some testing on DVD upscaling and finally watching some UHD content on my not 4k tv. I love this player, it excels at everything I throw at it. I've seen some of the best picture quality I've ever had on this tired old tv, I'm amazed.

Standard Blu-ray is the same as anything else, but the way this handles upscaling DVD and downscaling 4k and doing the SDR conversion is fantastic.

UHD looks fine. Also, I can’t tell a difference between the auto setting and direct under video settings. So, some form of DNR is still being applied somewhere.

After testing it out, I told my wife I was afraid of what would happen when I started checking out my favorite movies. 4k 3D TV, 7.1 audio, kick-ass 3D UHD Blu-Ray player..? I still haven't played Fantasia. Told her once I did, someone would have to drag me out of the house with a tow truck.

Is the general consensus to leave upscaling for DVD and blu ray on auto 2 and video resolution 4k or auto?

Negative. I turn upscaling off on the X800 player and let my TV do the upscaling as it looks less unmolested.

I would think it depends on the tv right? I have a vizio m60-d1 4K HDR tv. Its a good tv but i would think the player would be better at upscaling.

Do you keep you resolution on original under video settings?

Maybe somewhere here can help me...

I upgraded my system back in November. Very novice with this stuff.

I received two 4K discs for free and at the time I thought they looked good when I tested them out. I started to buy some more and am just getting around to watching the full movies and the 4K discs look much darker than the Blu-ray. I watched GoTG Vol. 2 the other day and it was so dark. I watched The Last Jedi last night and actually took the 4K disc out and finished watching the Blu because it was just so noticeably darker. What is wrong? Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing or overlooking that should be enabled or disabled? Are there settings on two of the components that are working against each other?

I have:
Sony XBR75X900E 75" 4K X-1 LED TV
Sony UBP-X800 4K UHD Blu-ray player
Denon AVR-X2300W

I've watched 4K (with HDR10, setting is on Auto) things via apps through the TV and it is darker, but not like this... as far as I can tell.

Try hitting the options button during playback and go to video settings and see if something besides direct is selected. Also what were the first movies you watched that werent as dark? From what I recall, both GOTG 2 and TLJ are a little more on the darker side but nothing that was unwatchable to me in even a bright room. Try making sure any options on the TV to pass HDR are enabled and make sure the correct black level is set as well. I have an OLED so I would imagine your set should be considerably brighter during playback of those films than mine.

Your TV likely needs seperate calibration for SDR and HDR modes.

You need to find out the individual recommended settings for 4K/HDR content for your particular display. When you do you will probably notice that things don't look as dark.

Here are some settings to start with and then tweak as needed. Good Luck

From what I have read, those settings are not to be used when viewing HDR. If you check the attachment, it mentions that the brightness should switch to max among other things when HDR is detected. If you have entered in the SDR settings for HDR content, that could be the problem.

Nevermind, I cannot attached the photo at a reasonable size so what I am referring to is this text:

When HDR content is detected the TV should switch automatically to the good settings, but if you want to be sure you can verify that the 'Brightness' is set to max, that ' Auto local dimming' is set to 'High' and that 'X-tended Dynamic Range' is set to 'High'.

In the 'Video options', just verify that 'HDR mode', 'HDMI video range' and 'Color space' are set to 'Auto' and it should change automatically to match the type of content you are watching, in this case, HDR content.

Thats the only changes you should make for HDR content, under the "video options"

So it turns out the enhanced HDMI input was not on. I turned that on and it is working now.

But the issue I have now is, when this is enabled, I'm not getting sound when I switch to Cable on my Receiver. So I guess I need to find a setting on the receiver now.

Sorry I posted this in the forum for the player. I thought that is where the issue was from originally.

The answer is not a setting on the receiver unfortunately. I had the same issue with a Scientific Atlanta cable box, video but no audio. Similar issue with the newer cable box my provider uses from Samsung except I get audio and video but the video gets severely messed up looking. In both cases the answer is to run the cable box to an un enhanced HDMI port and run an optical cable to the receiver for audio.

Not sure what causes these cable boxes to be incomparable but I had this problem with the same exact boxes hooked to a KS8000 and now an X930E

I had the same problem as this. The cable box seems behind the times in tech which has seriously caused some issues in setup.

With OPPO Digital INC now stopping production of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players soon. As far as I am aware the Sony UBP-X800 is the only other brand and model of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players that offers SACD and DVD-Audio support.

There is so much competition in the market, people purchasing a Sony UBP-X800 last year for around $149.99, was no competition for an OPPO UDP-203 that was priced at $549. I like both the OPPO and Sony, but the OPPO is definitely a better player.

I truly hope the Oppo is a better player!

Where I live (Europe) Oppo UDP-203 is priced at €850.....

Sony X800 is priced at €300 and it was the most i could spend for a player
