For legal reasons all manufactories of Blu-ray players are not allowed to sale a Blu-ray player that is region selectable (region free). They sign a licensing agreement with the Blu-ray Disc Association that requires all North America Blu-ray players to be region A and region 1 locked.
However there are third party companies that are allowed under the law to make and sale a upgrade kit or modify an existing Blu-ray player so that its region selectable for region A, B, and C (plus all regions for DVD). Legally consumers are allowed to own and purchase third party hacked region selectable Blu-ray players and kits from various companies. However for some brands and models it has been known that a firmware update to the Blu-ray player can sometimes make the region free modification not work anymore or the Blu-ray player is unable to work until the hardware modification is removed. If you are interested in companies that offer Blu-ray players that have been modified for all regions, then search Amazon or other websites for more information. The Sony I reviewed was a region A and region one locked player. |

first off, early Happy Birthday! ![]() ![]() ![]() Okay to answer your question, they are correct, the 373 is a 5.1 only receiver. which means if you do select even a 7.1 signal it'll only translate to 5.1 because there's no option for additional speakers in the receiver itself. however if you get a 575 you would definitely be futureproofing. since it can do 7.1 and beyond (atmos). I feel though a little steeper, you'll appreciate it for longer since it has more features and room to upgrade the speakers. but be sure to look at both and look at what they include (feature wise) as it may surprise you that maybe all you need is the 373. it all depends on the type of room this will be set in too, don't forget. for speaker hunting, I advise you research what you are looking for in sound. for example my goal was to have a home theater setup that focused on music as its primary function, so I made sure to find speakers that could deliver amazing musical sound but be dynamic enough to also push movies to its limits. I also did purchase my speakers a pair at a time so it took about 4 years to get it all to where I wanted but it was worth it because I was so meticulous with selecting the speakers and pairing with the right receiver for me. however, I think the purchase that will make the biggest difference sound wise would actually be a Sub, as you don't have one, you're definitely missing out on the awesome low range that HT speakers can't deliver without it. regardless of what they get you, hey, be happy, you're getting something awesome for your birthday and it's not like you're really going to stop there! |

Although I don't own a 4k projector or television yet, I decided to get this player since my dream of owning an Oppo have died, and I wanted a universal player that could play both high resolution formats. I was disappointed to find out that it would not play DVD+R discs with DVD-Audio ISO burns. It states that the disc is an unrecognized format. This is very unfortunate since I have the first Oppo upscaling DVD player, and that thing plays all of them. They were discs that we're never available commercially like Dark Side of the Moon. Does the newest Oppo players still play burned DVD-AUDIO discs?

All Blu-ray players can play recordable optical discs, however certain brands of recordable discs have compatibility issues with certain players. Stamped optical discs in the factory do not have this problem, its only certain recordable discs that have compatibility issues when used on certain Blu-ray players.
For homemade family videos, one can copy it to another brand of optical disc that well sometimes overcome the incompatibility issue. |

Let's hope this thread doesn't become the second home of the oppo lot and their audiophilia, as there's better places for that. Also, please keep this thread on topic. |

Greetings,
Just replaced my Samsung UBD-K8500 with the Sony UBP-X800 and I am very pleased with it. My K8500 still is working fine, but there were a few things about it I was not a fan of. I was very pleased to see that virtually every aspect of the X800 is an improvement over the K8500 and the build quality is far exceeding the aforementioned. |

I never experimented with the Samsung 4K Blu-ray players. I've read the owners comments and professional reviews from various sources. They have some picture qualities, and some less than stellar other attributes.
I was totally turned off by their physical designs when I touched them from top to bottom and front to back @ my local video stores. Their front curvature to match their curved TVs is not my favorite design. Their lightweight plastic cases doesn't inspire confidence and reliability and noise reduction from the internal disc transport. I saw in person the 8500 right besides the Sony X800. The Samsung 8500 was $250 Canadian on sale @ the time...and the Sony X800 on sale @ $200 Canadian. I went for the cheaper player...price wise. I just couldn't afford the cheap looking plastic design of the Ssamsung player, and even if it would have been only $100 Canadian. But some reviewers rated it favorably for speed, for picture quality, streaming. Same for the Sony X800 player. |

This is a great player. I bought it to compliment a new 4k TV but I am using it with my old Pioneer Elite. Looks better playing regular blu rays than my older panasonic. it tracks motion much better. although, my old player was 50 bucks so this one should be better. better picture contrast and depth in blacks and lower light. its a winner.

I just purchased this player (X800) along with the LG 65UJ6540 (65 inch) television. Got the HDR/4K certified cables and whatnot as well.
I began playing Alien Covenant on UHD and noticed this being displayed by the player.... (HDR -> SDR) ![]() Why is it being downgraded from HDR to SDR or am I reading that wrong? Thanks! |
