Luckily the only problems I ever had with this player, was that it would sometimes not play a movie once a disc had been inserted, the screen would just stay black. Had to disconnect the power in order for it to work again. And the only disc that ever froze on me, was King Kong UHD. That was when I first got it, no more problems since then (knock on wood).

So far every optical disc I have put in the Sony plays flawless. The only real problem was that automatic firmware update feature not working. But now it looks like Sony fixed that issue since their server works fine now after the latest update.

I noticed the update was available last night when I tried watching a UHD... as 10-15 minutes in, it popped up on the screen whilst I was watching the film. (I had to pause the film and rewind given it eclipsed what was happening on screen...) Will make sure the update is applied later, but hopefully that interruption behaviour doesn't reoccur. Terrible design!

In the [System Settings] section, turn the [Software Update Notification] Off (page 25 in the manual)
Problem solved, you'll never get another interruption while watching a flick from your X800 machine. ___ * If you need another great universal 4K BR player try to get on the list for the last batch of Oppo 205 players. It's a solid unit with advantages. |

It is only suppose to notify of a firmware software update when a disc is not being played and when streaming services are not being used. There must of been some glitch or delay in the Sony firmware update feature. It is the norm for programmers to disable the automatic firmware update notification as soon as a optical disc starts playing. Something went wrong with the software design like you mentioned. Maybe after you update the firmware that auto update feature well be fixed. Problems on how the auto update work has been the only problems I have experienced with the Sony UBP-X800. For some reason those problems I mentioned before with the firmware update server connection errors all went away after the latest firmware update. The latest Sony firmware update has the latest AACS encryption keys to play the latest new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases. |

Unless of course a recent update added DD+ then my info is outdated. Haven't checked in a while. |

Mine was acting wonky again when I tried to play a disc. It said no disc detected then the screen went black. I was unable to eject the disc, and eventually had to unplug the player and restart. After a quick reboot I got the message that a new update was available. Does anybody else have these issues? I also notice an extreme lag (5 to 7 seconds) between the time I hit open/close on the remote, and when the tray actually performs it's function.

It means your AVR is using the Dolby Surround DSP to process the 2.0 audio, matrixing the audio into surround from a stereo source (as long as it's been mixed Lt/Rt).

Installing the latest firmware update should fix the issue. Some people have reported the automatic update feature notification causing some issues until one installs the latest update. It must be that when a new update is available the player might act up until the update is installed. I have never had a problem playing any optical disc on the Sony and a family member I know plays a different Blu-ray almost everyday in it since they have the Netflix unlimited Blu-ray rental plan by mail. The new update also has the latest security keys for coming soon new releases. |

I have owned this player since it came out in the UK and I watch discs on it most days.
My experience with it has been almost flawless, a couple of firmwares back I had some problem with the Revenant disc a couple of times, sound issues and other problems but that's been it (and unplugging the player and plugging it in again solved the problem). Otherwise it's played everything I've thrown at it well, including many ultra hd blu rays. Then again I only own about 20 ultra hd discs so there may be problems with some discs I haven't got. I've also always managed to update it wirelessly every time a new firmware has come out, without issue. I'm happy with this player especially as my tv although 4k and hdr etc, does not have dolby vision. (also I don't use the streaming apps on it so I can't comment on its performance with those). |

I've owned my X800 since launch. Initially I used both HDMi outputs and had the player freeze a couple of times where the plug needed to be pulled. But since July 2017 I've only been using one hDMI output and I've had no issues. It's been working great with the streaming services and UHD BD playback

Just for that alone this player is worth whatever the asking price is. Even @ full retail price it's like getting a machine for free. And as an added bonus it even plays multichannel DVD-Audio discs. Forget 4K, forget 3D, forget Blu-ray, forget DVD, forget Netflix, YouTube, Vudu, Pandora, Amazon, ...etc., get it for the high-res music audiofiles. Anything else is free. And it's available, unlike the Oppo 203. To do better you'd need to be real lucky and get on that list of the 205 reservation, for the last batch...August 2018. Comes next Christmas, if you have been a good boy, the X800 might come your way for almost free. Bugs? Do you know any electronic components without any bugs? |

I bought this player not long after it was originally released, never had any problems with it until yesterday when I was watching The Dark Knight. It froze about 40ish minutes in and actually wouldn't turn off at all (not from the remote, not at the box, etc). had to unplug it from the surge protector.
Went to see if I had a firmware update that I missed, and despite my modem/router being in the same room and the connectivity showing "strong", it wouldn't connect to the internet to check for any updates. I had been planning on moving this to being a secondary player and getting the new LG UBK90, since I have an LG TV (and soon an LG Soundbar), but I wasn't planning on making that change so soon. |

A firmware update won't fix The Dark Knight.
The Sony X800 won't last forever, but you did the right thing by unplugging it and replugging it. It works now...The Dark Knight? * I luv that flick, the UHD version. |
