I was having all manner of weirdo problems with my X800 recently.
Wierd colors on menu, no menu at all, blank screen, unable to turn off, Unknown discs. Had to unplug multiple times, then got the firmware update and turned off Quick Start. Now that it's booting from scratch every time, things are going better... |

[Quick Start Mode] ... I love the default setting best ... Off
I found that the less power you ask from that player the best it is to live without issues. It doesn't have a huge power supply, in all consideration. It's not say an Oppo 205. |

Is this player dying slowly.
Me I think so because all apps are inoperative now, caput. When you want to watch Netflix or any other app it tells you that you need to perform a network software update. So the only way to have the apps working is to update your player by force. And if you don't want to be forced your player's apps are all dead. I've never seen that before with any other players. Is there s hiding trick to watch Netflix without updating your Sony X800? I don't need to update my player, I don't want to, it was perfectly fine before; now if I don't update it I'll never get back my streaming apps for it...thanks very much so Sony, you lost me. What about the rest of you; are you too in that same boat? Or did you update your player to have your apps back and have zero or some issues now. Sony's support is very low, super low, way too low. |

But you did have to update it in order to have your apps back.
That's good you have no issues with the update, it would also be good that all others who did have no issues either. I'm reading audio forums in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, UK, China, Japan...and some owners of the Sony X800 4K BR players have all kind of issues now since they updated their players in order to stream from their apps; X800 freezing, audio/video sync problems, players stop playing, discs breaking out in pixelization, audio cut out, BD discs freezes, 4K BR discs freezes, door not opening, remote not responding, ... I'd like to hear from say one hundred owners to have a better overall view, here. But anyway, for Sony to make the apps inoperative is not good, it's bad. You don't need to force your customers to perform software updates if they don't want to, if they are happy, and nothing is broken. Why fix something that is not broken? If it ain't broken .... But Sony sure broke that player by making all apps caput. If you want your apps back you have zero choice; you have to update it, and see if it fits. If it does, good, if it doesn't, kiss your player goodbye. Last edited by LordoftheRings; 07-12-2018 at 05:00 PM. |

The Sony UBP-X800 could support the exact same streaming apps as the UBP-X700 if Sony would just have a programmer create new or similar apps. Then with a firmware update the UBP-X800 could have the same apps as the UBP-X700. However Dolby Vision HDR is not supported from streaming or optical disc on the UBP-X800 since the first generation processor is not powerful enough. Even the first generation 4K OPPO UDP-203/UDP-205 had challenges and some minor hardware limitations when Dolby Vision HDR was released.
I like the Sony UBP-X800 since it plays all optical discs including DVD-AUDIO. DVD-Audio was dropped and never offered on the new Sony UBP-X700. The UBP-X800 is ideal for someone that has a older 4K or 1080P display without the Dolby Vision HDR feature. |

We all know about the no go of Dolby Vision for the X800. And the OPPO 203/205...they have their own dedicated threads on why they are the best players in the world. Me too, I like the X800 (not as much as the 205 though). But for a second player or third...it's almost perfect. And for the price, it is perfect. ...Particularly with a non-Dolby Vision front projector and flat panel 4K UHD HDR10 TV. |

This is the first SACD player of any kind that outputs some kind of signal via coaxial output while playing an SACD disc. It must not do the HDMI handshake with a pre/receiver able of playing DSD via HDMI. If you set one input on your receiver to digital coaxial with no HDMI input asigned, set it on this input, then turn the X-800 on and play a stereo SACD you will get a 176.4/24 PCM signal.
There may be more players that do this but this is the first one I've seen doing it. |
