Some people need to watch more movies I think.
It's not like the X800 is ten years old, or that it costs a million bucks. It's no worst than buying a refurbished Oppo player for five times more. I'm watching Planet of the Apes tonight, in 3D. |

As far as I am aware no one currently has these refurbished players in stock, so it is a minor issue discussing something that is not even available for purchase anymore.
Of course factory new and sealed Blu-ray players are better. Some people purchase refurbished players when new ones are no longer available, others purchase refurbished players since the price is cheaper then a new one. Most of the time refurbished players are almost as good as a new player. |

I bought a "refurbished" Sony X700 player on Amazon in early June for $130, a nice discount from the $198 price for a new one. It came in a plain brown box but with all accessories and looked brand new. It certainly wasn't "refurbished" as when I started it up it immediately notified me there was a firmware update available, one that had been out for a couple weeks. Speaking for the X700, I don't get the interest in the X800 - the X700 is the latest model and has Dolby Vision which the X800 will never have. I've been 100% happy with my X700. Yes the Sony UBP-X700 is better for someone that wants Dolby Vision HDR. Someone mentioned awhile ago that the Sony UBP-X800 is out of production. The interest in the UBP-X800 is the ability to play DVD-AUDIO discs, wireless headphone support, and better build quality.
If one does not have DVD-AUDIO discs and never plans on buying a DVD-AUDIO disc then the UBP-X700 is a better player because of Dolby Vision HDR. Hopefully late this year or next year Sony could come out with a replacement for the UBP-X800 (maybe UBP-X900 with Dolby Vision HDR built in). |

Something that hasn’t been mentioned in the players thread but was in another one, the X700 in DV mode disables all the 3D functionality of the player. That is a deal breaker for me. Just hope I can get that last batch of oppo 205

___ On another feature of the X800: Netflix; now when you check different movie titles, horizontally and vertically, each time you stop @ a title the display gets all black with a flash and the player is making a reconnection...handshake. It never ever happened before; it is new, and I just don't know why it's doing that now. It was much better before, the display never went black for each movie title you stopped to read info and see the moving short clips. This is no doubt annoying now. I cannot be the only one, just no way Jose. And Sony as an attentive company to their quality products and customers they have to be aware and working on a quick solution to fix this annoying issue. I didn't want to update this player because I never had any issue, same for my Oppo 205. But I had no choice because all apps were frozen. Now my streaming player developed an issue, brand new Netflix issue. The more I see the more I realize Oppo's decision to stay away from streaming apps inside their 4K BR players as an intelligent decision. We are the lucky ones, they don't make them anymore the way they used to. * And of course, some Sony rep is reading this thread; good. |

My opinion is just as grounded in reality as yours. Many of us, where it isn't our first rodeo, know and understand that it is a bad idea to buy "open-box" returned electronics in general. It doesn't matter how good the price is when half of them are broken returns or display models. If you don't agree with other people's opinions then that's fine. But don't be so dismissive. More importantly, this x800 is a model where customer dissatisfaction % has flown far under the radar for some reason. MANY owners have had problems with their players constantly freezing up and resetting. That's kind of the point of these posts, that people need to be reminded. A "refurbished" x800 is not a good deal in at least half of instances. The x800 is one of those models where many of us DEFINITELY wouldn't recommend buying a used model due to the frequency of problems that owners have had. And save all the "well I have a x800 player and it works great so nyahhh!" posts in response to this post. That's fine; that's great. I have an x800 player that I like very much too [Show spoiler] TL;DR: Unlike other more reliable models the x800 is not an electronics product that you would want to buy used. |

Few days ago the power went out, black out, for roughly fifteen minutes. I noticed after that, but I don't remember if it first started after the software update. Thank you, setting it to "Off" fixed the issue. ![]() ___ * The photograph in your avatar is the best. ![]() Last edited by LordoftheRings; 07-23-2018 at 08:08 PM. |

This is a non issue since there is no native Blu-ray 3D discs that has HDR. All Blu-ray 3D discs are a maximum of native 1080P with SDR. Now if you want to convert 2D to simulated 3D that might be a issue. When in Dolby Vision HDR mode a player is using all its bandwidth resources to offer the Dolby Vision HDR feature. |

Is the 800 better then the 700 for 1080p blurays and dvds ? that all that matters to me for now . I have it but not opened yet , It was a steal and no player at $150 is going to come close no matter how much it's being criticized on this board .

II have a Sony HT-CT790 hooked up to this player. I see options for Stereo and Surround in the player settings, and wondered if there's a difference between the two when hooked up to a soundbar. I think mine is only capable of 2.1, but wondered if there's any change between the two sound wise.

It doesn't matter, it's for the [Downmix]...just leave it @ its default setting [Stereo]
But! If your Sound bar supports Dolby and dts surround sound select [Surround] ... Experiment. * Select [Off] for the [BD Audio MIX Setting] Last edited by LordoftheRings; 07-24-2018 at 06:06 PM. |

For 1080p Blu-rays which is the better player, the X800 or the X700?
...Most likely equal. • https://www.cnet.com/au/products/sony-ubp-x800/review/ For DVDs? "The Sony X700 compared to the X800 though, the more-expensive player (X800) was a little bit better at playing DVDs, with less moire on the edges of the buildings in our Star Trek test disc. ...The Sony X800 do a better job of reproducing DVDs with less jaggies." • https://www.cnet.com/au/products/sony-ubp-x700/review/ • https://www.cnet.com/au/products/son...x700/review/2/ ___ * Send your X800 to Amir for audio measurements...USB port, HDMI Audio output, digital coaxial out. For video measurements ask him if he can do that too; we live in an audio/video world...one without the other is not exactly the same, you have to use your imagination to see moving pictures where there are none. Live music concerts are best; you can see the emotions on the faces of the musicians; it gives you an additional advantage...a closer human relationship with the arts of high fidelity live music. Live music concerts on Blu-ray with hires surround audio is better than digital stereo music from internet hires download audio files or hifi stereo from analog albums (LPs) spinning on a turntable. Unless! You are in the higher brackets ($$%) of the analog world. Still, moving pictures are undeniable, in real life as on a screen. Have a pleasant day, send my regards to Amir. Quite a bit of power for a 2.1 soundbar. Yea, have the BD Audio Mix set to off...that was one of the first must-dos for the player when i got it. |
