Also, have a question on this player when paired with a Sony Soundbar.

I have this hooked up to a Sony HT-CT790, both the player and soundbar have similar options.

Under Screen Settings, for color space I have the player set to YCbCr 4:2:2 (I have a Vizio M65-D0...not a true 12 bit panel or even 10 bit for the matter...8 bit + FRC).

For the Soundbar it has similar options for the color space under Screen Settings.

Question is should be color space settings mirror one another...i.e., should they both be set to YCbCr 4:2:2 or is it ok for the soundbar to be set to Auto, or does it even matter?

Want to be sure no extra processing is happening at the soundbar that's unnecessary or if they have to match.

thanks!

I have the 800 and couldn't believe the difference in my 1080p discs. much more detail . I have been waiting to upgrade my TV but will only buy a 4k 3d tv. The only one I can really find now is the sony Z and thats like 4500 dollars . Just have to make do with my old 52 xbr.

Wow ,The box feels like almost 15 pounds ,Can't wait to get the 800 going .
It's not an Oppo but for a quarter of the price of a 203 I'm pretty happy and I can finally play my sacd I have been collecting .

My modified region free Sony bluray player is not even 2 pounds in weight and looks like companion cable box lol.

Quite a bit of power for a 2.1 soundbar.

Yea, have the BD Audio Mix set to off...that was one of the first must-dos for the player when i got it.
Your sound bar can be set to apply surround sound to stereo content, so in the Sony player it doesn't matter where you set Downmix.

I would simply set them both to Auto.

I finally updated my player, hooked it up to my receiver also and the blinking issue on the main menu screen is gone. If this player had Dolby vision I would be very satisfied and not go after the oppo 205.

It's a weird day, it's super hot and there is a lot of traffic on Amazon Prime with all the sales going on.

As for the X800, $160 is a great price for a great universal 4K BR player.
As for the bugs; like anywhere in real life...there are some somewhere, and more somewhere else, and none in different places. It depends...of many things, and nowhere is there an absolute global reaffirmation common to the universal general population.

Nobody has the two exactly same setups with the exact same combination of audio/video gear, and the exact same settings. Anything can happen, anytime, it happened before and it will happen again, it's just a question of when ...

Damn asteroids! They're even worse than a 4K Blu-Ray player that has bugs!!

I got my X800 in June of 2017 when I got my 4K OLED TV. It has generally performed very well with an occasional freeze up here and there. After seeing some A-B comparisons between HDR10 and Dolby Vision material, I found that, in most case, I preferred DV. When It became obvious that Sony either wouldn't or, for technical reasons, couldn't upgrade the X800 to DV I gulped hard and bought an Oppo-203 just before it was announced that Oppo would no longer make disc players. The Oppo and the Sony share some characteristics. Both are built like tanks and both do an excellent job of up-scaling 1080P Blu-rays to 4K. The Sony does have some limited streaming apps while the Oppo has none. The biggest difference is that the Oppo could do Dolby Vision out of the box. I decided to keep the X800 because it is an excellent unit and would be a worthy back up player if the Oppo needed repairs. After all, every boy should have two UHD players in his AV stand

I apologize if there’s a better thread for this question.

I watched Isle of Dogs last night and there were grayed out blocks of text that stayed on the screen until the next cut after they first appear in their full color. It only happens when I play the movie on my X800 (on both the BD and DVD), but not on my computer or PS4. Has anyone experienced something similar to this?

Depending on the settings of your X800 it may be related to the upscaling of the BD & DVD. Of course I know nothing of your PS4 or computer capabilities and config settings.

I would try changing the X800 upscale setting to "Original" (or "1080p" for BD) instead of "4K" or "Auto" if it's not already set that way.
This is purely an acid test to determine if the X800 upscaling accounts for the delta exhibited by your PS4 or computer.

Did you just get the unit? Have you tried other titles? If not, go ahead and spin some other discs. Have a good time! Enjoy.

If this is a recurring problem with multiple discs, it's likely a result of your panel settings needing adjusted for the superior X800.

Oh, and don't forget to change the upscale setting back to "Auto" when you're done.

I turned upscaling off to let the OLED do it. By all accounts, that's what I've read is best. I got it not too long ago, and have watched a handful of discs on it (both BD and UHD). First time noticing this kind of anomaly.

Uh-oh, is this one of those random OLED "features" I've heard about?

Okay, so you've had it for a little while. I always prefer the player handling the upscaling but different strokes as the saying goes.

Unless it's a show stopper I would just chalk it up to an anamoly for this particular title. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but better than driving yourself crazy over what amounts to a grand total of less than a minute?

Sorry I couldn't be of greater assistance.

The X-800 4K upscaling is lousy IMO. I have the video output set to Original Resolution and let my Samsung T.V. set do the upscaling, it just looks much better with more picture detail. The X-800 upscaling seems to apply some kind of DNR that renders a soft and fuzzy picture.

If the reference is to video noise reduction, the settings are available when watching a disc by pressing the OPTIONS key on the remote, then going down to Video Settings, and then choose Direct for no processing of any kind. These instructions are on pp. 18-19 of the manual for the U.S. model.
For audio which Sony labels DRC, that is under the Setup Menu, Audio Settings, Audio DRC and turn off for no compression (on p. 22 of manual).

Do you have to do it every time you put a disc in ?
