I set the audio DRC initially when I first purchased the machine and that stays off as long as you tell it to. But I'm pretty sure it remembers your last choice.

I checked last night with a disc I was watching and then switched to another disk and it stayed on Direct so for me, it remembers the last setting. I would assume if you do a factory reset, it goes back to whatever the original setting was which I believe was AUTO.

I have the video settings set to Direct and if I set output reolution to 4K and playing a 1080p BD the video smoothing/noise reduction is still there.
At least coupled with my Samsung set it's better to set the Sony X-800 ouput resolution to "Original Resolution" and let the Samsung set do the upscaling.

My understanding is that the Direct option under Video Settings while watching a disc passes the signal without modification while the other settings there can adjust the brightness output and/or perform noise reduction. That is different from the resolution or upscaling you mentioned which is found under Screen Settings in the Setup menu. The player or the tv can upscale as you said but the Direct option is separate from that. How much of a difference it makes is hard to say but Direct seems to be favored by some posters here and on AVS.

With this player it's best to use the direct setting and turn all upscaling off. My TV actually upscales 1080 content better than my player.

Direct does not apply the noise reduction, yep. Didn't matter whether I was outputting 1080p direct or 4K upscaled, direct is the most unmolested picture mode.

I 100% agree with you on that. Upscaling on this playing is lousy even with "Direct" mode on, picture is soft and fuzzy.

So this payer Is not good for dvds and blurays , I heard from a few reviews say this is as good as a oppo 203 , now it's not good , Which is it . I still have 1 week to return it . My 2016 W800C 1080p sony tv does not have the greatest upscaler . I was hoping for my bluray player to do the work since it was highly regarded as the Oppo 203 . The x800 was one of the highest rated for dvds in a showdown one some sight under .

I love the player and haven’t had any issues with it. Yes, I let the tv do the upscaling. But it still plays discs just fine; no matter if they’re DVDs, blu-rays or 4K Blu-rays.

I have had my X800 for one year and one month now. I have had no problems whatsoever, and it provides an excellent picture.

Weird experience with mine today. Turned it on, would only show gibberish. Unplugged it and plugged it back in. Would turn on but display nothing. Unplugged/Plugged again and it turned on but went back to initial setup. Worked fine after setting it up again. Had it for 15 months or so for those curious.

When watching UHD discs, does it make a difference whether I set the player setting to "Original Resolution" or "4K"?

The upscaling looks fine to me, very natural. One might be inclined to think that whatever your TV is doing to process 1080p signals is jazzing them up somewhat, that's fine if that's how you and others like it, but from testing this unit with a bevy of patterns and signals (and, AFAIK, being the first one to actually discover the forced noise reduction on upscaled content when set to Auto under Video Settings) it's doing nothing untoward to the upscaled images when Auto is disengaged.

Should be the same with UHD discs.

I missed that post.

There is not much you can do; it comes with the territory and under Sony's umbrella. Still, beats the Oppo 203 and 205 with zero apps in the players.

Look @ it this way: it's a universal 4K Blu-ray player, it costs only between $149 and $199 on sale, it streams more or less depending of where you live, it's built better than Samsung and LG and Philips, and some Panasonic models, it produces an excellent 4K picture, it sounds good, has two HDMI outputs, it plays a ton of discs (audio & video), it plays a ton of audio files, it has a front USB port, it looks cute, it doesnt take a lot of space, it's simple, no thrills no superficial features that nobody uses, it works as designed, it's a Sony.

It suits a certain clientele, if it doesn't because in Canada we don't have the support of as many apps as in the USA, it's not a very big deal. And it's not Sony's fault; we just live in one of the most beautiful and peaceful countries of the world...we can live harmoniously with less apps. Nothing is going to disturb our peace and our happiness, nothing and nobody.

It's too bad Oppo Digital left the building, but c'est la vie and there are many more happy players out there...just check the new Panasonic 4K players...they too come with apps, and less in Canada...it's normal with all the brands in Canada, but still better than Oppo 203 and 205 who aren't available anymore.

Also, keep an eye open on Pioneer Elite 4K BR universal player.

@ the end of the journey, even in Canada, the Sony X800 4K BR universal player is among one of the very top best...performance and universality and value wise...visually and auditory, more apps (USA) or less apps (the Great White North, land of peace, equality, respect and happiness) ... forever more after the beginning and end of times.

That is it; Netflix and YouTube.

Your next option is get a US citizenship, marry a beautiful American girl, and build a home sweet home in America. America is beautiful, and opportunities abound. The economy is strong. Then you'd get more apps. And they have all the best movie theaters and some of the best jazzmen.

Some of my best friends are Americans.

Youtube app stopped working all of a sudden. It loads the main screen but doesn't go further from there. A quick Google search shows more reports on this.

Anyone having the same problem?

Also having problems with YouTube. When it appears on screen the video is way off center and has a large black block on it's left side, and the screen covers the listings on the right side to a point that I can only see a few of them.
