It's a GE HDMI cable, it's good for 4k. The problem now is navigating this menu in the dark and getting the right setting back. I've been trying all kinds of combinations for a bit now, still working on it.

Tomorrow if you have the time, or Saturday, bring your player to your closest TV store, or Best Buy.
Ask to plug it in their 4K demo TV.

Forget the menu setting, your player needs a real shock treatment...way of speech.
It is not normal to have a blank screen.
And use their own HDMI cable, no need to bring yours.

Seems that is the final option here.

Thank you to everyone offering their help, it is very appreciated. Will update when I get the issue solved.

Oh yeah... not saying it is "easy" or even able to be done... it's just a shot in the dark. (badump bumpbump)

Went to a local place that rents/sells furniture and TV's. All they had were 4k's so I was in luck and the only customer in there. Didn't want to deal with trying to talk some employee at Wal-Mart into letting me do this and the closest Best Buy is an hour away.

Had to pose as someone wanting to purchase a new 4k TV, but it did the trick. Soon as I plugged in, the menu displayed and quicker than shit through a goose I changed the "output video resolution" back to "auto." Needless to say, I learned a huge lesson here, but still, this is something that Sony really should change with future players, if an idiot like me stumbles upon setting it to 4k, without a 4k TV or at the very least, build in some reboot button somewhere that can reset the player to factory settings when the main menu is inaccessible.

Soon as I got home and plugged in, the home menu was back. Thanks to all who took time and effort to try and help me with this issue and hopefully this helps someone in the future and they don't haphazardly play around with the output video settings like myself.

EDIT -- When you hit "display" while a film is playing it says, in the top left corner, "HDR->SDR", I admit I am fairly new to 4k, as you know I don't even have a 4k TV yet, but what does this mean exactly? I know what HDR is, but I don't think I know what "HDR->SDR" means exactly. Also what number do you guys display the "HDR conversion" at? Right now mine is on 2.

Now I just need to go through all the settings and make sure I didn't change too much while I was trying to navigate the menu while it was still black.

Also, I have noticed now since I've gotten the menu back, while a disc is in the player on the home menu where it displays the image of a disc, there is also the image of a folder on top of it in the bottom right corner of the display box. I don't know if this is something new, but I never noticed it before.

Glad you were able to get that fixed. I was going to suggest also that you check the settings on your HDMI port of the tv. I don't know if you have Deep Color as that may just be for 4k, but someone mentioned turning that off and their display came back from black but I think they were having a different type of issue.

The HDR to SDR should only come up if you're playing a 4K disc on your 1080p set which is what I currently have as I need a different cabinet if I get a new larger tv. When playing blu-rays, it should say 1080p and also for DVD's if you let the player upscale using Auto.

Thanks for the information. I'm playing a standard blu-ray now and just checked. "1080/24p SDR."

What exactly do you mean ? Put it on 1080p instead of auto ?
I experience the same issue you had with Isle of Dogs.
How about the 4K upscale on the player? Auto 1 or 2 or off ?

I checked the scene 4 times to see that it’s there all 4 times. Then I put the output on the player to 1080p instead of auto and checked again. Problem gone.
Then I switched back to auto and switched the 4K upscale to auto 2 instead of auto 1. Problem also gone. Then I checked again the setting I had in the beginning with auto 1, where the problem occurred and it was now also gone !
This is weird.

I wonder if a video setting in your TV would have also fixed the issue.
That was a radical step you took to fix that issue; Sony should be aware of this and have a solution. It should be included in their Troubleshooting section.

I see it as a flaw; the player should have an "emergency door exit" that would eliminate this...losing access to the main screen menu...and setup.

• It is my belief that a video setting in your TV would have get rid of that black screen.
_____

* Yes the HDR->SDR you see is simply the conversion of the 4K disc taking place to your 1080p TV. The adjustment slider for this (between 1 and 5), for a 1080p display, that you have now selected @ 2, is fine. Sometimes with some movies 1 is better. Adjust to own taste per each film basis.

** The last paragraph of your post; that folder image...I don't know.
Do you also have a USB stick plugged in into the front port?
Can you take a snapshot with your cell phone of that home menu with a disc inside the player?

I meant when the disc is playing press options on your remote and in that side menu go to video settings and change it to direct. For 4K upscaling, Auto 1 lets the tv handle it, while Auto 2 lets the player handle it. I had it off before, and recently put it on Auto 1.

Thanks for your reply, I will check that out tonight.
As far as for the 4K upscaling it depends on your tv apperantly .

Auto 1 w/ Sony TV - X800 upscales to 1080p, 1080p passed as is.
Auto 2 w/ Sony TV - X800 upscales to 4k

Auto 1 w/ another brand - X800 upscales to 4k
Auto 2 w/ another brand - X800 upscales to 4k

If you had the video setting on Auto then it was applying noise reduction to sub 4K content, like your isle of dogs and black panther (hence the frozen looking grain). That setting MUST be changed from Auto to avoid the baked-in DNR when watching regular Blus.

Interesting. The breakdown I read didn’t mention it depending on the brand of tv. But I’ve also seen conflicting reports about how well the X800 upscales, with most saying to let the tv do it, but you’re saying either Auto 1 or 2 will still make the player do it, since I don’t have a Sony tv?

The player upscales perfectly fine with my Sony panel. I have no clue what others are referring to.
Just configure the unit and lock in your settings.

I don’t have a Sony TV either, and if I choose auto 1 a Blu-ray plays 4K/24p SDR. On a Sony TV it is supposed to be 1080p/24p SDR if I’m correct and 4K/24p in auto 2. I will check a Blu-ray later and see what it states if I turn upscale off. But anyway, a Blu-ray will be upscaled anyway. You can’t choose an option on a TV to set the upscale off right? I have an LG OLED C7.
You’d have to check out then what device upscales better. The player or the TV.

This is from the Manuel:

Auto1: Outputs 2K (1920 × 1080) video signals during video playback and 4K video signals during photo play when connected to a 4K-compatible device made by Sony. Outputs 4K video signals during playback of 24p video contents or photo play when connected to a non-Sony 4K-compatible device. This setting does not work for 3D video image playback.
Auto2: Automatically outputs 4K/24p video signals when you connect a 4K/24p-compatible device and configure the appropriate settings in [Network content 24p Output]. Also outputs 4K/24p photo images when you play 2D photo files.
Off
Note
If your Sony device is not detected when [Auto1] is selected, the setting will have the same effect as the [Auto2] setting.
The [4K Output] setting does not affect video signals from the HDMI IN jacks. If you want to upscale video signals from the HDMI IN jacks to 4K, use [HDMI In 4K Scaling] in HDMI Settings menu

PS

Those ^ upscaling settings only work if the video resolution is set to Automatic. Anything other than that (original, 4K, whatever) and it means diddly, not that it does anything other than cause mucho confusion anyway.

Haha, now I’m even more confused
ANd that option should be set to direct right ?
So if you have it in DIRECT you can put it on auto 1 or 2 or off, it all don’t matter ?
