[Speaking BD-L, it's interesting to consider what might have been if the studios had been more forward-thinking and used that connectivity to deliver more substantive content . . . like streamed movies (and not just the "Community Live Screening" of The Dark Knight, which I remember participating in). It's one of the reasons any sympathy I might have for the studios' attitude towards Netflix is complicated. How ironic to remember that Netflix was d/b/a Red Envelope Entertainment in film production and distribution in 2006, quitting in 2008 so as to not offend their studio partners. Obviously, they got over that starting in 2012.] |

But according to Wikipedia, it was back in 2014 that Sony sold Gracenote to Tribune (who then sold it to Nielsen in 2017) . . .

Im looking for my first 4k Blu Ray player. Im looking to retire my ps3 as my main dvd player. I don't have a 4k tv yet. Still got my plasma. But I want to upgrade so that I will already have a 4k player when the time comes to update my tv. So my question is would you recommend this to me? Looks like its only about $200 at this time. Not sure Im willing to spend over $300 for a 4k dvd player.

The only question is Dolby Vision.
If you want it wait for the replacement in May, the UBP-X800M2, most likely for $299 retail. But, on Black Friday 2019 I bet it'll be $199 That was the second question; can you wait. Last edited by LordoftheRings; 03-15-2019 at 08:36 PM. |

In the future when the 2019 Sony UBP-X800M2 is released in theory someone should be creating a users thread for that player. The 2019 Sony UBP-X800M2 is exactly the same as the 2017 Sony UBP-X800 except for faster processor that supports Dolby Vision HDR and a $100 higher list price. When the Sony UBP-X800M2 is released it well have a $400 list price and most likely a $400 street price for a few months. Maybe one day the Sony could see a $299 to $349 retail price. Also logically a November 2019 price of $199 is possible if inflation does not kick in and if Sony is trying to clear out inventory. However the Sony UBP-X800M2 might be Sony's last Blu-ray player and made in smaller QTY's which could result in the player being priced locked at $400. Its hard to predict the future accurately and one well just have to wait and see what happens. It is not a good sign that Sony did not design a new Blu-ray player from the ground up and made small changes to the existing 2017 UBP-X800 when creating the 2019 UBP-X800M2. From what I read it is my understanding that there well be no new ES Sony Blu-ray player this year either. Hopefully that info is wrong. UPDATE the new 2019 Sony UBP-X800M2 official list price is $300. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...7&postcount=49 Last edited by HDTV1080P; 04-17-2019 at 01:51 AM. |

I am in the same boat as Mikevieira. Jumping into 4K soon, and was planning to get the X800, as according to rtings.com, it has superior DVD playback compared to the X700. Which is more desirable for me than Dolby Vision, as I watch a ton of DVD content still.
Will wait for reviews, but I would be ecstatic if the X800M2 had the same DVD playback as the X800, along with Dolby Vision. |

Right now the X800 list price is $299, but it's on sale everywhere for $199
$200 more (X800M2 @ $399) just to have Dolby Vision? No way, it won't take long for the X800M2 to be @ $299. When the M2 comes on sale @ Black Friday or/and @ Boxing Day for $199 or $149 I'll buy couple of them. If this is any indication of new players from Sony ... • https://launchstudio.bluetooth.com/ListingDetails/8229 Last edited by LordoftheRings; 03-15-2019 at 08:51 PM. |

The differences between the 2 are that the x800 has a much sturdier build, is quieter, and supports hi-res audio with SACD and DVD-Audio playback. |

SACD yes (but I doubt people buy that player for that feature).
DVD-Audio no (it really doesn't matter for people who buy the X700). The main essence of the X700 is Dolby Vision. When the X800M2 appears it all will fade away, more so on Boxing Day. And it will be just a bit harder for the Panasonic 820 player...money. |

I would like to have a Dolby Vision compatible player from the start, as I have a couple DV discs already, and would like to be prepared. If the M2 truly has a more powerful processor as well, seems worth the wait. The question is whether to wait for it on sale, or jump on it asap. Will keep a sharp eye on it.

After two years of glitch free play my X-800 has decided to be a pain in the ass. Might just be showing its age because i've put some serious miles on it - hours a day - be it playing discs, watching Netflix or Amazon Prime.
Latest firmware but problems with three different blemish free discs in the last week - pixelation and general freezing/skipping. Darkest Hour, the Darkest Hour replacement disc (crapping out in the exact same spots, which raises red flags that it was the player not the discs) and The Purge: Anarchy last night. All Universal titles, so I don't know if that means anything ![]() Also watched Tomb Raider (Warner Bros), Ghost in the Shell (Paramount), Snow White and the Huntsman (Universal) and Equalizer 2 (Sony) but they were all fine. Still, three discs in one week after nothing in two years is too much of a coincidence. Been meaning to buy a back-up player anyway so I went for the Panasonic 820 which i've wanted to check out for a while now. It'll be interesting to see if the same discs give me problems on the Panny. |
