If you want a Sony 4K BR player with Dolby Vision you have three options: 1. Buy the X700 2. Wait about three weeks for the X800M2 3. Wait for the X1100ES to be released "soon" Last edited by LordoftheRings; 04-23-2019 at 09:39 PM. |

hi just recently bought this player and have a couple of questions.
ive read a few comments about turning on quick play but cant find this option anywhere on the player or in the manual. also do all of you always update the firmware or are some of happy on whatever firmware your on. i only ask as many people say they only started getting problems with the player after firmware update. im currently on M36.R.0238 and am not sure if i should update or not. any help much appreciated |

Also, the Dolby Vision on this upgraded model should work with the Sony Z9D correct? It sounds as though they would be compatible for Dolby Vision. |

I assume you mean Quick Start mode which is on p. 25 of the manual and is found under Setup/System Settings from the home screen. As for firmware, I have always updated with no issues. A lot depends on your setup as some people have had issues with certain combinations of equipment such as projectors and receivers.

Don't know if it was coincidence, but the last firmware updated killed my previously rock solid X800. It started to occasionally turn its self on and lock up, started to lock up while powering down and it started to reset to factory settings on it's own. It progressed from being occasionally that the unit was being reset to every time I turned it on. I switched to a X700 and like it so far. The X800 was a launch model, so a few years old.

I encountered one major blip with the Sony X800 (latest firmware). ...The one and only one ever in about eighteen months. It totally froze on The Incredibles 2 4K BR. ...About half way.
Nothing worked, ...all remote control buttons, power button on the remote and front panel, eject button, ...nothing. The picture was frozen and that was it. The next logical step was supremely easy; disconnect the AC power cord from the wall AC outlet, wait thirty seconds, replug the AC power cord...bingo! ...All 100% working brand new normal again. That's not worst than my Oppo players. ...Extremely rarely I encountered a glitch involving my Oppo players. It has more to do or with a connection, or another component compatibility, or power fluctuations during heavy winds and rain outside...black bouts. This too: I believe that with any product, any brand, ...anything is possible. And it could be for a million reasons. ...From batches, connections, QC, HDMI compatibity, power, wires, jacks, discs, dirt, smudge, scratches, ...a million more reasons. I have the best luck with Oppo players, Sony players. And the bad luck I had with other players were quality control of the laser mechanism, or simply an inferior Blu-ray player brand with nowhere near the great support and service from Oppo. No wonder they sell the 203 and 205 on eBay for two to three times what they originally cost. But anyone can encounter issues with any player. It's fine if it can be remedied without much sweat, and if it is only occasionally for a good reason. But it is frustrating if no solution is found, and the player is practically caput and not under warranty. ...Even more so when the player costs from say $500 to $2,000 We're all different with our finances; a $200 4K BR player is a serious investment for some folks. Other folks don't even watch 4K BR movies because they don't make $10,000+ 4K BR players. ![]() Anyway, the X800 is inexpensive ($199), very. And the X800M2 (Dolby Vision) is coming up...$299. Sure there are other more expensive players from Panasonic and Pioneer. That's nice to have choices and spend what we want to spend. It's nice to pick a player for the features we like. It's a lovely spring day today, 29° Celsius outside. I stay under the tree's shade with a gentle breeze coming from the ocean. ...No problemo, all tranquility in paradise beachfront. ...Canada way of living. |

Quick question. Should I be able to notice a difference in resolution from a regular blu ray to an ultra HD while looking at a still image? I’m using the X-800 and when I’m watching a movie, it feels like there is a bump in resolution. But I’m not sure if that’s just my eyes playing tricks on me. When I pause a still image on the x-800 with a 4k blu ray, and then switch inputs to the same image, a regular blu ray in my Samsung blu ray player, I don’t really notice a resolution bump. Full disclosure, I am using a 4K tv that doesn’t support HDR, and I bought this specific player because it’s pretty good at converting an HDR signal to SDR, but I mainly invested in 4K blu rays for the resolution (and future proofing). Any chance I’m doing something wrong, or is it just hard to notice the resolution on a paused image?

A TV that supports HDR would be the first positive step.

Secondly, remember that independent of the content, a 4K TV presents the content in 4K. Furthermore, your perception of the resolution, e.g., the amount of detail, can vary widely dependent upon the distance you are seated from the screen along with your TV settings, e.g., gamma, brightness, sharpness, etc., and the settings for your X800, e.g., picture settings, resolution/upscaling, etc. And we haven't even touched on HDR, which does not apply in this case. The bottom line is that for certain discs, a comparison of Blu vs. UHD specific to image detail may appear negligible at best, especially given the absence of HDR. |

The Sony X-800 does a terrible job at both converting HDR to SDR and upconverting HD to 4K. |

Panasonic I've read is best @ performing this act, both ways.

I like 3D way to much to abandon it for HDR, TVs with both were way out of my price range, and now they are practically extinct.

I’ve also done the same test on a 65” Samsung JU7500, which does have HDR (albeit added afterwards, and possibly not the real thing). And I’ve had similar results. It seems extremely detailed in motion, but when comparing a paused still image, even that of a skyline or something with small details in the distance, I find it hard to notice much of a difference.
