The 4K OPPO, 4K Sony, 4K Panasonic, and 4K Pioneer Blu-ray players are much more reliable when compared to some other brands of 4K Blu-ray players. 90% of the time my year 2016 OPPO UDP-203 and my family members year 2017 Sony UBP-X800 play 100GB triple layer 4K Blu-ray discs back perfectly. However just recently after playing a total QTY of 23 100GB Blu-ray discs, a total QTY of 2 100GB discs were partially defective and needed to be exchanged. The optical discs were cleaned several times and the problem discs were verified on 3 separate 4K Blu-ray players.

This is for a boxset that was released on Nov 3rd 2020, therefore some studios need to work to make sure 100GB Blu-ray discs have no defects during the stamping and manufacturing process. My point is so far the problems I have seen with 100GB discs has always been the manufacturing process of the disc and not the player.

If you are talking about the Game Of Thrones UHD BD set, I was surprised but scared at the same time when I read all the issues with it.
Fortunately I got the UK set and all the discs looked pristine after visual inspection and after watching the whole set I'm happy to tell that I didn't have a single issue with the UK set without the need of cleaning a single disc. I guess European QC are more strict.

It is my understanding that that the UK version uses the exact same region free 33 Blu-ray discs that are in the USA version, and the only difference between the UK version and USA version is the retail box. My family member now has a complete flawless Game of Thrones set after exchanging two defective 100GB discs.

But most likely the discs on the Game Of Thrones UK UHD BD set were made in Europe, unlike most US releses which UHD BDs are made in Mexico that may have a lower quality control.

I've never had any kind of quality or playback issues with those Mexican-made discs. The total freeze-up I had on Man of Steel was with the UK/European disc. This update would have more to do with the player's ability to process high-bitrate data output.

Why don't Sony players auto switch HDR formats (on any of their players)?

This Sony player only has one HDR format - HDR10.

Incorrect. It also does Dolby Vision. The issue that yanksno1 is asking about it the fact that the Sony's do not do auto detect/switch for Dolby Vision UHDs. You need to manually switch it on and off in the settings menu.

The UBP-X800M2 does Dolby Vision. The UBP-X800 does not.

Really good to get an update for the X800 after so long, this represents very good value for money from Sony.

I have been very happy with my X800 overall, after some very early teething issues (I bought it as soon as it was available on Amazon UK and had some weird issues with early UHDs), resolved with firmware updates years ago, it has played every CD, DVD, blu ray and UHD blu ray I've thrown at it, flawlessly.

For my family members two Sony UDP-X800 4K Blu-ray players that were purchased 4 years ago in 2017, I just downloaded the latest firmware update over the Blu-ray players 100% wired ethernet connection. The process was fast and installation worked flawless with all user settings maintained. Now my family members can play the latest release 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs that contain the latest encryption keys. According to the firmware update information on the Sony website, the only improvements made is the ability to play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, which usually means the latest encryption keys are in the new firmware update to playback the latest 4K Blu-ray disc releases coming soon (sometimes firmware updates correct playback problems with older 4K Blu-ray disc titles that have already been released). It should be mentioned that on 8-23-2021 all Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players received a firmware update that can be installed by ethernet, WI-FI, or USB stick. However ethernet is the fastest and most reliable method to install the firmware update.

IMO it can be, if the X700 plastic casing contributes to overheating. Suggest ensuring good airflow.

The X800 has a better metal build with less sensitivity to overheating.

Updated my x800 but now everything looks so dark. iTunes is so bright with dolby vision when I go back to x800 HDR10 just seems dark.

Has anyone here been able to play the quadraphonic mix (not the 5.1-channel mix) on the Dark Side of the Moon Blu-ray? YouTube user Life in Surround could only get the front two channels to play, not the rear two channels.
