More like Oppo is using Sony parts. As stated above, Sony has been using MT a LONG time, and the laser in the Oppo 203 is a Sony

Anyone know when the uk version is coming? The american version is retailing at $300 but the uk is priced at £400 / $500.

Could i buy one from the usa and it would play ok on my uk tv? I know ild have to always buy american discs but the mark up is insane.

In Canada it is 400 loonies (MSRP). But give it a year or so for roughly $200 street, or less; discount, sale, inventory replacement, etc.

It's true that many brands use a Sony laser mechanism, even my Rotel CD players.
Panasonic used to be top @ plasmas, now they use LG OLED panels.
Is Sony also using LG OLED panels...I think so. ...Samsung?

By the way, I was late with the news; I didn't know that Sony could play DVD Audio discs.
But true, even some of their regular BR players have that capability, in addition to SACDs, of course. And both stereo and multichannel hi-res from them and from audio philes.
The Sony UBP-X800 is a true universal 4K/3D BR player; can it be easily modified to play all Blu-ray discs from all five world regions?

* 4K needs all the boost it can get, intelligent boost. ...With quality 4K BR transfers and compatible with all 4K BR players and 4K displays (TVs and PJs).

Right on! 3D is still alive with 4K BR players, thanks 3D heavens. And with the high prices for 75" and larger Sony and LG 4K TVs (2017 models with 2D only), 4k/3D front projectors are just sailing along with much better affordability. And bigger too...from 78" to 200" screen sizes, depending on your desire to be be fully 3D immersed.

Question: Computer monitors, are they still making them 3D ready? Because if they are and you sit two feet from a 40" 3D screen monitor, it's almost like being @ the IMAX 3D REAL theater.

Numer two question: 4K Blu-ray burners, can they play 3D Blu-ray flicks? Because if they do, those you can get from roughly the same price of a Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-ray player heavily discounted on the street. If not just get the Sony.

The future looks bright, the future is now...today. It's a good time to be a 4K/movie/3D/music lover. ...SACD, DVD-Audio multichannel, Atmos, DTS:X, ...all that jazz.

3-D computer monitors are not that good of quality when compared to a projector or OLED screen. Every BD-ROM drive made since the year 2006 can play Blu-ray 3D discs. All one needs to do is have the latest version of PowerDVD Ultra or another brand like Corel WinDVD Pro. One cannot play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs on a computer yet.

Here is a brief article from Sound and Vision magazine regarding the Sony UBP-X800 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Amazon has pictures of the remote and there is a Netflix button on the remote. So this player most likely ships with native 4K Ultra HD Netflix streaming. Also according to the article one will be able to receive two 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs that has a $50 value if they purchase the player thru June 30th. That is like paying only $250 for the player since one is getting two movies with it for free.

The OPPO UDP-203 offers better build quality using a metal case, etc. The OPPO has 7.1 analog audio outputs and optical audio output for older A/V receivers, RS-232 port, 2 USB 3.0 rear ports, rear IR and in/out triggers, promised Dolby Vision upgrade with firmware update. The OPPO UDP-203 for $250 more is a better Blu-ray player.

The only advantage of the new Sony is 4K Ultra HD streaming and a lower price. In the future OPPO Digital INC might decide to offer some streaming features with a firmware update, however that is not guaranteed.

The OPPO UDP-203 will always be priced locked at $549, however by late 2017 the Sony UBP-X800 should be available for $199.

My take is that there are those who value the additional I/O and are willing to pay an additional $250 (or perhaps $350 by Black Friday), but I'm sure that we would both agree it is a distinct minority.

In my opinion, its more likely Sony will add DV than Oppo adding Netflix streaming.

The build on the new Sony appears to be more robust then recent Sony players; my guess it will be good enough for all expect those who use an A/V rack. Agree on the price, which wouldn't represent that much of an issue for prospective Oppo buyers, except for the fact that Oppo is having significant issues to provide even basic playback functionality with the 203. Let's face it, what's the value of paying a premium, when the premium is for a player that is problematic.

I hope that by the end of 2017 there might be a professional review by Sound and Vision magazine and/or Widescreen Review magazine in regards to both the OPPO and Sony Blu-ray players. Yes the OPPO UDP-203 needs some firmware updates and its not perfect, however so far every optical disc I have tried in it works perfectly.

I know nothing about monitors, so thank you for the info.
I also know nothing about Blu-ray recording/playback drives, so it was a surprise to learn that they can also play 3D Blu-ray movies.

I do know that some laptops are 4K resolution, so some people who love small screens can play 4K Blu-ray movies on them, and I guess 3D too.

The Oppo 203 is the limo of all 4K BR players right now, from what you've just described. You told us how much you love that machine, to the point of buying four of them...for the entire family (you must have a big family).

For someone who simply want to play 4K Blu-rays, regular Blu-rays, 3D Blu-rays, SACDs, DVD-Video/Audio, CDs, Streaming, Netflix, ...the Sony universal player would do, even more so with 2 free 4K BR movies in the box, and few months from now when on sale for approximately $199 (that's $350 now less than the bullet-proof limousine all terrain vehicle Oppo 203 tank). ...Or the higher-end class.

I was just about going to say that.

Also from: Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity
http://hometheaterhifi.com/

And from Stereophile too; the Oppo 203 and Oppo 205.

And like you said; it works perfectly so far for some people, like being in the heavens, and for others, for whatever reason; dirty discs, bad connections, wrong video settings, long HDMI cables, handshake issues with certain brands, delay too short between powering all the components, bad batches of discs, disc correction errors, firmware updates needed for few little things, ...audio/video dropouts, wrong firmware for 3D (1229), few disc lock ups, ...so it's like a nightmare for them. But if they keep the faith they should eventually join the rest of the gang to the heavens.

And then there is the Sony 800. ...Also the Panny, the Sammy, the LG, the Philips, the Microsoft, more Panny, more Sammy, more Sony, ... and another Oppo, the 205.

I would buy the 203 in a heartbeat, with the assurance of a reliable player in my home. And I will; just not tomorrow morning, yet.

Anyway, it's very nice that we now have more 4K Blu-ray players, including the Sony 800. The more we have the better are our choices.

Next: 3D home comeback. Because 3D is the Real deal for movie immersion. There is nothing like it, nothing with that 3-dimensional experience. ...In my very humble opinion and experience. And when people like Paul said that the 203 is excellent @ 3D Blu-ray presentation, with a large collection of 3D Blu-ray movies and documentaries, and with the other vision from 4K (and future 8K), I simply don't want to miss the ferry to across the universe.

Plus, with HDMI 2.1 ... 3D have the potential to extend beyond the four walls or our living home theaters, outside and above in the sky.

James Cameron with Avatar scientology; #2, 3, 4 & 5 in (((3D)))),
should break the sound barrier and pulverize all and any walls erected, no matter how thick and how tall. ...And same from Disney with Star Wars "scientology".

'Titanic' in 3D is cooler than in 2D...in my "eyes" perspective. Next 'Titanic' in 8K...maybe.

When I go to IMAX, I go big or I go home...in 3D.

I live in British Colombia, in North America, not far by plane or by ferry from Vancouver, where the cinema industry is boiling, along with Lionsgate. ...Way of speech, and we love saving money...everyone movie actors/actresses, film directors, cinematographers from all around the world, including south of the border, without walls.

The Sony 800 might be small and light and inexpensive; but it has its place in this world, too. We here @ LordoftheRings, welcome it and thank you for your invaluable informations.

I am using the latest firmware version. My family members have a total of 5 OPPO UDP-203 players, and not 4. Out of those 5, I currently own 1 player since that is all I need for right now. It is becoming a common practice for some people to have several home theater rooms in one’s house, including ones bedroom.

The Sony would be my second choice of Blu-ray players. Currently I have OPPO, and Panasonic models of Blu-ray players. I only use OPPO, Panasonic, and Sony since they are the most reliable when it comes to firmware updates. The new Sony in theory will be the second best native 4K Blu-ray player on the market for audiophiles. This will be the first time in history that they offer DVD-AUDIO. And Sony will sell a lot more players then OPPO, since the player is much cheaper and offered in many retail stores. OPPO Blu-ray players have always been a more expensive niche market for those consumers that want the best. Of course in theory the Sony and OPPO should have the exact same picture and sound quality over HDMI for native 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.

I hate those Netflix buttons with a passion!!

For those who like to stream, got nothing against that but that doesn't mean there has to be an ugly, eye catching button on almost every remote for it these days.

Sorry, five Oppo 203, with yours included.

I thought Sony has some BR player models with DVD-Audio, before the 800?
Let me verify on that and I shall be back.

The latest OFFICIAL PUBLIC firmware update is the 1229. Do you like 3D Blu-ray movies, any other member of your family, with a total of "five" players?

Did anyone in your family also try the HDMI Input?
________

It don't matter to me; Sony, Oppo, Panasonic, LG, Philips, Samsung, Ayre, Bryston, Classe, ...as long as the machine works properly for what it was designed to work properly for...solid operation of all the features we love. The Sony 800 included...and no one has one yet, but very very soon...as they have already hit the Amazon stores across our walls.

The highest praise and contribution we can bring, in my opinion, is when awed by the performance and nice smooth operation of all the features of our electronics. ...And also from comparing with other similar products from the same goal...here 4K BR playback, with 3D BR playback, CD/SACD playback, DVD-V/A playback, regular Blu-ray (2D) playback, ...brief the main spinning attraction between the Sony 800 and the Oppo 203.
* The Oppo 203's thread is stagnant, meaning going nowhere much till most issues are resolved for most people, but not including you and your family with five players because you have already mentioned that all discs play without issues. I guess you and your family aren't into 3D Blu-ray movies?
You must also be cleaning your discs, and use only certified HDMI cables, and have perfect handshake, sync between all your other electronic components forming all the chains from all the five players.

That is great, 4K is the new thing and I'm all for new technologies. I saw it with my own eyes and it looks splendid, marvelous. If the 800 can reproduce what I saw and without issues, including 3D...it's going to be a beautiful day.

You are right; it is becoming a common practice, in North America, to have several BR players per each household.

I'll check for Sony's DVD-Audio playback thing, prior to the 800...
_____

@elwaylite, I think it's very good to compare...Sony, Oppo, Panasonic, etc.
Because it opens our views much more clear, and helps us to make the right decisions based on what our needs and priorities are in this new world of 4K Blu-ray. Like prices are very relevant for most people. In that perspective, it's a positive, I think.

* Can't wait to get 'Hacksaw Ridge' on Blu. I've read it's a great movie based on a true story, and boys love war movies with battles, blood, guns, heroic acts, bullets zigzagging by, mortars exploding, human limbs flying, etc. And, ...Mel Gibson as the film director, so we know that the fake stuff looks more real with Mel. ...Not for girls, in general, for the boys, restricted.

It's a beautiful day today Sunday, here. I wish a same majestic one to everyone, everywhere. ...DVD-Audio & Sony ....
_____

EDIT: I found it → http://www.sony.com/electronics/blu-...players/uhp-h1
It's also a new product (Spring 2016), and it plays DVD-Audio.

But yes, this is the first time in Sony's history, 2016-17, that DVD-Audio playback is added. To me...WoW!
And speaking of DVD-Audio, get Roger Waters "Amused to Death", and, Yes "Tales from Topographic Oceans" ...both on DVD-Audio/Blu-ray Audio. And Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here", "The Dark Side of the Moon", "The Wall", ...on SACDs.
Any of those hi-res spinning audio disc format...the Sony 800 can play them all. That's pretty cool, and from just one cable connection...HDMI.
The full multichannel hi-res audio in all its splendor, right here, and for the price of a bag of chips, on Black Friday roughly.

I'm primarily getting the Sony hoping that they have the Sony Ultra app in order to stream Sony 4k movies but I haven't heard a peep as to whether it will have the app or not. I don't know why Sony is keeping this so secret? They should have published the list of streaming apps included in the player by now.

Has any new info come out on if the SOC in the Sony is a MediaTek chip that could potentially be upgraded to Dolby Vision? Of the announced DV players the Oppo is overkill for what I want and I'm not sure on the quality of either the Phillips or LG having never owned either brand player. Anyone have experience with either brand? Are they worth taking a chance on?

The previous model Philips is nice, especially if disc playback is your priority.

I have the new LG on preorder, as well as the Sony, so Ill be experimenting with both. Id like Dolby Vision and Netflix/Amazon HDR in one package.

As far as Sony SoC's, they use MediaTek historically. One could assume the reason they did not have a player last year is waiting on mid 2016 for MT to get a chip out (which is supposed to do DV as well). This same chip is what Oppo made a custom version of for their player, or what we think putting clues together. So, I would assume the Sony can do DV, and an article above actually states it will get DV.

If the Sony gets DV, and has nice app support, it will prob be the player to get at $299.
