Sure, discounts happen. That really has no bearing on the 1st qtr player releases, and the Sony is in a good position.
If they give both Amazon and Netflix in HDR, that trumps what Panny is doing. |

Two freebies; 4K BR flicks. That's a nice touch.

'Ghostbusters: Answer the Call' and 'The Angry Birds Movie' → both full 4k/3D/BR combo packages.

Choose from over 15 titles! ...3D included or not. That's about a $50 bonus value. About 'The Magnificent Se7en'? You like westerns, remakes? About animations; 'The Angry Birds Movie' in 3D? By the way, what are the other over 11 titles to choose from? ...More 4K/3D/BR packages in there? |

It is my understanding that all Blu-ray players with HDMI 2.0a can be upgraded to HDMI 2.0b (DolbyVision) with a firmware update as long as the company pays the proper licensing fees to Dolby.
However to keep cost low some Blu-ray players might not get a DolbyVision upgrade. In the future maybe all second generation 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players might be HDMI 2.0b or HDMI 2.1 with DolbyVision support. Peoples A/V receivers also need to get firmware updates for HDMI 2.0b if they want DolbyVision pass through. |

UHD Blu-ray players have to have Dolby Vision "certified compatible" video chipsets and enough processing power to enable DV support via firmware update. So far the Oppo 203 and LG players will have Dolby Vision added in the near future. It's still unclear if the Sony players will be updated. |

Nope. A certain amount of onboard processing power is needed as well, if you dont have that on the SoC, it aint gonna get an upgrade. The Sony and Oppo with the MT chip of course do, the LG has had a custom chip with DV since last year so their player will, but dont expect the Panny 900 to get it. |

SoC must be powerful enough to decode both the standard HDR10 layer and the additional DV layer at the same time. Then of course they have to pay Dolby for the license...
