Sure, discounts happen. That really has no bearing on the 1st qtr player releases, and the Sony is in a good position.

If they give both Amazon and Netflix in HDR, that trumps what Panny is doing.

Two freebies; 4K BR flicks. That's a nice touch.

It's crazy that 299$ become 399€ without any movie bundled...

'Ghostbusters: Answer the Call' and 'The Angry Birds Movie' → both full 4k/3D/BR combo packages.

However, Ghostbusters 2016 is a steaming pile. No wonder they're giving the discs away for free.

Yay, that GB 2016 bashing in random threads never gets tiring...

Eh, it ain't the greatest movie in the world. I kinda dig the theatrical cut but the extended outstays its welcome, and it's a damned shame that's the only cut on the UHD.

What would be your two preferred 4K BR movie picks from Sony Pictures to go along with your new Sony 4K universal machine?
Choose from over 15 titles! ...3D included or not.

That's about a $50 bonus value. About 'The Magnificent Se7en'? You like westerns, remakes? About animations; 'The Angry Birds Movie' in 3D?

By the way, what are the other over 11 titles to choose from? ...More 4K/3D/BR packages in there?

Haven't thought about it. Would only consider this player if it gets solid reviews and a 12 bit Dolby Vision update.

Oh! That would also be my first priority, hopefully before the movie deal expired (June 30th 2017).

One article, after a hands on, said it was coming so you figure Sony would shoot that down. But who knows until it happens?

Ill be happy if it starts out with:
  • Reliable UHD Disc playback
  • Netflix and Amazon UHD WITH HDR
  • 24hz output on those apps

It is my understanding that all Blu-ray players with HDMI 2.0a can be upgraded to HDMI 2.0b (DolbyVision) with a firmware update as long as the company pays the proper licensing fees to Dolby.

However to keep cost low some Blu-ray players might not get a DolbyVision upgrade. In the future maybe all second generation 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players might be HDMI 2.0b or HDMI 2.1 with DolbyVision support.

Peoples A/V receivers also need to get firmware updates for HDMI 2.0b if they want DolbyVision pass through.

Not all receivers with HDMI 2.0a will be getting instructional updates to allow Dolby Vision metadata pass-through. DV runs through version 1.4, but the HDMI chips still need to be able to "see" the metadata to allow it through.

UHD Blu-ray players have to have Dolby Vision "certified compatible" video chipsets and enough processing power to enable DV support via firmware update.

So far the Oppo 203 and LG players will have Dolby Vision added in the near future. It's still unclear if the Sony players will be updated.

Nope. A certain amount of onboard processing power is needed as well, if you dont have that on the SoC, it aint gonna get an upgrade. The Sony and Oppo with the MT chip of course do, the LG has had a custom chip with DV since last year so their player will, but dont expect the Panny 900 to get it.

SoC must be powerful enough to decode both the standard HDR10 layer and the additional DV layer at the same time. Then of course they have to pay Dolby for the license...
