Are you using HDR Standard preset? Nothing else looks right to me. How about LG Color Gamut? I have mine on Normal. Are you using Dynamic Contrast on Low? Last edited by Frank@Chicago; 10-06-2017 at 03:10 PM. |

I've tried watching movies with dynamic contrast off - for some things it doesn't seem to make a huge difference but for others it seems pretty dramatic. So I usually have it in low, yes. Once in a while medium. I would never use high as that just blows out the picture. Probably not quite what it should look like but oh well. It's like my 0, -2 motion setting. I've tried 0,0 but then some of the pans on say PE2 look jittery to me. |

Should Smart LED be on for SDR and HDR content? If so, why and should it be on the high setting?

My main query here is, will it also support multi-channel DSD and FLAC files via USB? Last edited by Iain-; 10-07-2017 at 12:22 PM. Reason: add last para. |

You are quoting a old post from Jan. There are several $50-$100 Sony Blu-ray players that will not play the DSD section of the SACD. So with this model, Sony returned to being able to play native DSD from the SACD layer. All modern Blu-ray players play the audio CD layer on SACD's. Yes you are correct this is the first time Sony has support DVD-Audio discs, which was a smart move since less people will buy the more expensive OPPO Blu-ray players. |

A few days ago I got the X800 and for some reason I think that it has compatibility issues with my Sony 55X930D TV. When I set the x800 to auto in screen settings it takes several seconds to for my X930D to get a picture and sometimes it does not get the picture. This happens with a 4k movie, but on a bluray movies there is no issue. When I turn off deep color in the x800, the picture shows within a two seconds on a 4k movie and bluray movie is normal. When I select YCbCr 4:2:2 with deep color on, HDR auto, and 24p auto on the x800, the picture shows up right way both on 4k movie discs and bluray discs. I connected the x800 directly to my tv and to my receiver and had the same results. I'm using monoprice HDMI Certified Premium Highspeed cables. Does this picture issue have to do with the X800 thinking that my X930D has enough bandwidth to display YCbCr 4:4:4/10 bit or 12 bit/HDR/24p at the same time?

The Displayport 1.4 cable has a much higher capacity than HDMI 2.0, so the new HDMI 2.1 standard will help catching up to it. Last edited by Bishop_99; 10-08-2017 at 02:37 PM. |

Anyone else find themselves using the original resolution setting on the player? I feel like SDR BDs upscaled to 4K causes a loss in detail, because of what looks to be some smoothing filter used during the upscaling process.

Depends on whether the TV does a better job. Personally I like the 4K upscaling in the player as there's less chroma roll-off with a 4K signal being piped to the TV than a 1080p one.

I feel the same, played a few BD's this past week and I like how the X800 handles the upscale to my TV...I even fed it my old Criterion DVD copy of Silence of the Lambs just for the fun of it and I felt it even gave that a significant PQ boost that was pretty pleasing to me.

I’ve got my UBP-X800 player connected to either a VPL-VW1100ES projector or a TC-P65ZT60 TV. Using the Chroma Allignment (Num) on the Spears & Munsil BD disc, I was surprised to discover that the chroma upsampling may be better if the resolution scaling to 4K is done in the player and not in the projector (which has an excellent reputation for upscaling). Below are my test results for H chroma. Note that V chroma has always a 0.0 pixel error (i.e. perfect), so I did not list it.
X800 -> 1100ES - Original Resolution (1080p) Auto +0.5 (defaults to 4:4:4) 4:2:2 +1.5 4:4:4 +0.5 RGB +0.5 X800 -> 1100ES - Auto Resolution (2160p) Auto +0.5 (defaults to 4:2:2) 4:2:2 +0.5 4:4:4 0.0 <- BEST for projector RGB 0.0 <- BEST for projector X800 -> ZT60 - Auto Resolution (1080p) Auto +0.5 (defaults to 4:4:4) 4:2:2 0.0 <- BEST for TV 4:4:4 +0.5 RGB +0.5 So, with regard to chroma upsampling, for my equipment, it is best to use 4:4:4 or RGB and upscale the resolution in the player when watching on the projector, or 4:2:2 when watching on the TV. This is a bit annoying since I will have to remember to switch the settings, depending on the display in use (although 90% of my watching is on the projector). I have always tried to avoid double chroma upsampling - in the player: 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 and in the display 4:2:2 to 4:4:4 (and RGB) - and thought that single chroma upsampling (i.e. 4:2:0 to 4:4:4 in the player) would be better but it seems that the X800 + ZT60 combination defies this principle. As an aside, I also have a BDP-S6700 connected to a TC-P65VT50. Here are the results for this combination: S6700 -> VT50 - Auto Resolution (1080p) Auto 0.0 (defaults to 4:4:4) 4:2:2 -0.5 4:4:4 0.0 RGB 0.0 Having said all the above, if I assume that the processing in the two Panasonic TVs is identical, it may be that the X800 introduces a +0.5 pixel error across the board. Indeed, if I subtract 0.5 pixels from the X800 -> ZT60 combination results, an identical performance to the S6700 -> VT50 is obtained. Furthermore, if I subtract 0.5 pixels from the results of both X800 -> 1100ES combinations, the best chroma upscaling would be for 4:4:4 / RGB with the projector upscaling from 1080p to 2160p. In other words, for all cases, the 4:4:4 / RGB setting would be best if the resolution was upscaled in the display, not in the player (again, assuming the the X800 introduces a 0.5 chroma upsampling pixel error). Bottom line: My recommendation is to do your own tests with the Spears & Munsil disc to determine the best settings for your setup. Also, I am not sure how visible to us a 0.5 pixel error in chroma upsampling would be on film material. |

I've had both the TV and player do the upscaling and I still think that SDR content looks better in the original resolution. What I'm seeing through the upscaling are an almost washed out look to the picture. When I switch back to 1080p the details stand out a lot more.

HDR: Auto Resolution: Either Auto or Original Resolution 24P: Auto for BD\UHD Color Space: YCbCr 4:2:2 HDMI Deep Color: Auto By default the X800 outputs auto picture settings that exceeds the bandwidth speed on 4k UHD movies for HDMI 2.0 specifications. The X800 outputs 4k/24p/4:4:4 10 bit or 12 bit/HDR10 in auto mode. This can cause picture syncing issues on 4k UHD movies. |

With Sony x800 set to pass Source Direct will it pass Dolby Vision Blu Ray Disc movies to LG OLED or Vizio TV's with Dolby Vision??? So you can watch the Movie in Dolby Vision with the TV processing the DV metaData..
