I tried the S&M upsampling patterns out last night, this is going into a Sony ZD9 TV. Using 4:4:4 I got a chroma error of 0.5+ in both 1080p and 4K upscaled outputs. Using 4:2:2 I got no chroma error in both 1080p and 4K upscaled outputs.

And, just to reiterate what I said about the chroma roll-off, the chroma zone plate is much darker at the edges when the TV is upscaling the 1080p signal itself, whereas the zone plate is much brighter edge-to-edge when in upscaled 4K from the Sony X800 player. The chroma multiburst also shows a similar improvement in the highest resolution horizontal res burst. Additionally, chroma itself seemed to be contained much better when the player is doing the 4K upscaling, the colour bleeds out quite noticeably when the TV is doing the upscaling.

I have an X-800 and an EU model 50" mid range Samsung HDR 4K set and I have the player's output set to Original Resolution so the X-800 doesn't do upscaling to 4K. I like how my Samsung set upscales HD sources better.
Keep in mind that setting the HDMI color space to Auto may give different results depending on the T.V. set connected to the player. My Samsung 4K set prefered color space is 4:2:2, I knew it just doing this. Set HDMI to Auto and then change it back to 4:4:4, screen goes black for a brief moment and then picture is back. Did the same but this time changed from Auto to RGB with the same result brief moment of black screen and the picture is back. I repeated this again this time changing from Auto to 4:2:2 and there's no brief moment of black screen, picture remains like nothing has been touched on the player.
But sometimes when playing HD BDs I change HDMI color space to 4:4:4 or RGB with no upscaling to 4K on the player and I have the feeling that picture is cleaner. Setting HDMI to Auto sets the color space that suits my/your T.V. best for 4K HDR not HD or SD.

There you go! Do the tests and find out what works best for your X800 -> display combination.

Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by “chroma zone plate”?

Thanks.

Sorry for being off topic but have tried the same patterns with the Panasonic player? If yes, What were the results?

The zone plate is the big circular colour pattern. It's like two below the chroma Multiburst on Spears & Munsil.

Yes, the chroma is perfectly aligned with any combo of 4:2:2, 4:4:4, 1080p and upscaled 4K. One other thing that caught my eye is in the HD chroma upsampling tests on S&M, I've NEVER seen them look as cleanly defined as they do on the Panasonic and the Sony shows some noticeable jaggies in comparison.

BUUUUUUT the 480i playback on the Panny is noticeably worse than on the Sony, as the SD chroma upsampling tests display some extremely weird behaviour, looking all scalloped and wibbly on the Panny whereas the Sony is much better. This is also borne out in playback as I first noticed this months ago when viewing the DVD of Archer S7 on the Panny, it looks really jaggy and odd. I thought it was just a poorly mastered DVD but it looks soooooo much better on the Sony and its present on other 480i content too. I don't recall the Panny looking this shitty with 480i content before and 576i PAL is fine, maybe it's always been there but it could also have been a recent firmware bug. I really should send the Panny tech bods an email.

Do you guys do video straight to the tv or through your receivers? Im noticing lately a minor sync issue in my setup thats only noticeable with UHD bluray. Regualr blurays seems fine, and if I manually adjust delay in the reveiver, it fixes UHD but throws blu off a bit. This is sort of driving me nuts. Every possible setting I think would affect the video output I have turned off in my receiver... which is the Sony DN1070.

Any additional advice? I sometimes hate having such a nitpicky eye.

I have mine hooked up to the tv for video and the audio goes to my avr. That way DV works for me.

Question

I've got a a 75" 4K Samsung on order so I'm in the market for a 4K player. I'm giving serious thought to this one and since it's on sale right now I'd like to get it ASAP. I've skimmed over this thread but honestly, most of the technical terms are basically completely foreign to me. All I really need to know is is this a good choice and and if not which player in a similar price range would be?

Okay, so I had the Panny and sold it. I took some of the cash from my Panny and purchased a REFURBISHED Sony 800 on BestBuy.com $146 after using my $25 gift certificate. Here's two questions for you guys:

1)Did I make a mistake? I'm wondering in there is a PQ difference worth the money with the Panny.

2)Anyone suggest any tips/tricks/settings for this Sony? I'm using it with a Vizio P75-C1.

Thanks in advance.

I have to update this, for the 1080i50 playback I must have initially tried a region locked disc, I swear it didn't give a region message but just said disc not compatible.

Anyway, don't know what spurred me to retry, but I threw in an F1 season review that I know doesn't have region coding on it, and it says it's outputting at 1080p50. My Onkyo also says 1080p50 and is doing pass through of 1080p50 and my Viera plasma (VT60, North American model) is playing it fine.

I've since got the 2013 Wimbledon disc (Djokovich vs. Murray) and it's 1080i50 and also the Sony plays it fine outputting 1080p50.

Wonder if they updated it with the 178 update to include playback of 50Hz material because I believe it's not a hardware change on the inside.

So great news, I'm not even more likely to just keep this player.

Guys, is it just me, or does the Sony’s picture appear darker than that of the Panny? I checked my tv to make sure Full UHD color was on, and I’m using “calibrated” picture mode on my Vizio P75-C1, but it just looks darker. My imagination? Also, anyone have any issues with the audio being slightly out of sync?

The 178 update must have certainly changed disc compatibility in the UBP-X800. When I read your post, I decided to recheck some of my disc that would not play before. The Alligator people (101 Films), The Devil Rides Out (Shock), Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (Shock), The Mummy's Shroud (Shock), The Plague of the Zombies (Shock), and The Reptile (Shock). The Alligator People played fine and looked great, Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell played fine and looked great, both showing as 1080/50p, at this time I get a bit excited, thinking I can now just use the UBP-X800 to watch all of these blu's, only to find out that the others still refuse to play, even though they are also Shock Video releases. The player showed those as region 2 and would not play, even though the company I purchased them from claimed they were all region releases. Anyway, good to know that Sony is beginning to embrace such things and provide them to customers through these new updates. Hope it gets even better. Thank you for your post.

Default Advice needed.

So I picked up a UBP-X800 to use with my new XBR-65X900E and WOW!!! The only problem is that I use a Logitech Harmony One universal remote and my other BD player in my HT is a Sony BDP-S3200 and apparently Sony uses the same remote code for all their players because both players turn on when I use one of them. So I am seeking some advice as to what a few solutions to my problem might be. I'd sure appreciate it because id like to run these 2 Sony's in my HT. Thanks in advance!

I don't think there is a solution. I used to have the same problem when I had two Sony players running along side of each other in my setup. I teached myself to turn on the one I needed manually and to never use the "power on/off", "play" and "eject" buttons on the remotes. I got used to it after a while but I'm glad I now have only one Sony player. This is one of the reasons I had my X800 made region free btw, so I could get rid of the region free 1080p Sony player.

you could get a power strip with a on/off switch and turn one off while using the other
