Guys, I need help. Is this a worthy player to get? My Sammy K8500 has a faulty output HDMI port and it looks like I need to replace that player

I like the player, myself. I've had the Samsung K8500, the Panasonic ub900 and now the Sony. Picture Quality is excellent, the menu is fairly simple and the amount of apps are okay. However, none of these three players I have does Dolby Vision, and it looks like Sony is not going to update this player to display Dolby Vision HDR.

I got this player on BestBuy.com, refurbished for $160. If you can get it for that price(or lower), I recommend it as a cheaper alternative to the superior Panasonic or the Oppo(which does BOTH HDR-10 and Dolby Vision). If your TV is Dolby Vision compatible, I would wait for the 2nd generation players, which should be coming out soon. Supposedly, some of these players will have Dolby Vision, so there's that.

Otherwise, if you don't care about Dolby Vision, this is a reasonably priced player that does a nice job of upscaling non-4k material like 1080p blu-rays and DVD's. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for that detailed explanation, very helpful. I do plan on going to Dolby Vision next year.

Anybody have issues with dropped frames when watching regular Blu-rays on this player? It doesn’t seem to happen when watching UHDs, just BDs.

I've updated to the latest firmware too and have checked my HDMI cable to the receiver.
I had a lot of lost signal issues between my X800 and LG tv. I found that just firing up a disc would bring the picture back. Also, after we switched out our older cable box for an xfinity x1, the problem with the blu ray player resolved and hasn't returned in over 2 months. Other links in the chain can affect each other apparently.

Crap, Costco seems to have stopped carrying this (in stores and online). This was my backup plan if LG can't fix my UP970.

Costco gets a good deal on items but then carries many items for only a few months. There are plenty of other retail stores and mail order companies that stock the Sony UBP-X800. Around the Christmas season in theory new players will be around $199 which would be a excellent bargain. Possible some Philips or Samsung 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players will be around $99.99 this Christmas season.

Sounds like you may have already answered your own question. If DV is what you seek then I would advise to wait. Unless Sony decides to push DV update soon.

I'm considering my options, as I need a region B player to play my UK/German blu-ray discs since my Seiki is failing, and I'm considering importing the UK X800 because that would give me region B 3D/blu-ray playback and combine it with a good UHD player since I don't own a UHD player yet.

My concern is how the player from the UK will handle PAL/50Hz content on a US TV. My LG UHD TV doesn't accept 50Hz signals. If the default output of the X800 UK version is 50Hz, my TV won't display it. Does this player have an output option for 1080p@60Hz/2160p@60Hz in the video settings? If so, will it auto-detect the TV type when it first powers up and output 60Hz? If not, I won't be able to see the menu to select the video output options.

Don't worry with the EU version of the Sony X-800, I live in Spain and have the EU X-800 bought on a local store and the menus are by default at 2160p @ 60 Hz when the player's video resolution out is configured to "Auto", "Original Resolution" or "4K".

Even though it doesn’t support DV I may consider getting this if my LG UP970 doesn’t work out (this or that cheap Philips that is supposed to get DV update).

To be honest, I don't think DV is that big of a deal. I have both compatible DV equipment: The Oppo 203 and the LG 65" UHD, and I can't tell a big difference between DV and HDR. They both look similar to me (that is).

That's great news. Thanks for the reply. That solves that worry. Sounds like right out of the box it should work with my US TV.

So this might be a good option for me to replace my all-region Seiki as well as getting a UHD player. I'd just keep my region A Panasonic hooked up for standard region A material, but that's no problem because I currently have 2 players anyways (counting the Seiki).

The current US price is $199 though, so the UK price is much more expensive. Have they not received the price drop yet? The UK version would cost me around $390 US. Of course the US X800 at $199 plus a separate region B blu-ray player would cost close to that anyways. I hope the UK price drops though.

Now if only I knew if this player would get a Dolby Vision update. That's the other thing that's giving me pause. I could wait until the next model, but I need 3D support for region B blu-rays, and maybe next year's model will drop 3D like Samsung's player. The X800 gives me everything but Dolby Vision, and if it included that, it would have everything I need.

I keep wondering that too. I (and many others) am making my decision on whether or not the player will support DV. To my untrained eyes I probably won’t be able to tell.

If I did get this player though, I will always have that small part of me saying “wonder how it would look with DV” haha.
