Let’s get even smarter.

The recent HPA awards noms announcement (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/be...ations-1147163) reminds me of the last HPA tech conference presentations - http://www.hdtvexpert.com/2018-hpa-t...igital-desert/

It’s taken three years from the time of this hue heads-up - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t#post10417134 , but better late than never, for Gary (Chair of the ASC’s Advanced Imaging Committee whose worked with the UHDTV Committee) for Gary to enlighten the audience of industry experts as to the Maxwell spot’s existence and significance.

Anyway, for those who don’t desire to get into the color weeds, in a nutshell, the presentation was geared toward his parametric appearance compensation for ambient surround lighting as it relates to mastering and display, be it in the cinema or at home….
HPA Tech Retreat 2018: Parametric Appearance Compensation - YouTube and as he says near the end before it’s opened up to the audience for questions….”many of these effects are very significant visually, I mean, they’re not sweep under the rug things.”

Although not in the same desert locale as Rainbow Canyon and the Panamint dry lake bed (which is definitely a good thing if you don’t enjoy watching out for stepping on rattlesnakes all the time), I’m looking forward to the 2019 HPA Tech Retreat next February.

Not just as a means for entertainment, the sequel can also serve as a catalyst for important issues, e.g. –

Aside from the 3 above ^, perhaps too much cutting edge on topic postings (parametric appearance compensation, AV1, etc.) about which does/or will fundamentally effect HDR and other next gen video features?
Not to worry, as the AV1 encoder, at this point, is slow so there’s not a heck of a lot of AV1 content out there to begin with, ergo –

more Top Gun: Maverick talk to enjoy ->

will eventually receive an HDR grade, if not immediately for the theatrical presentation, rest assured for the home deliverable.

Quote of the week:

"4K HDR only makes the picture a tad sharper (and in many instances the difference is not substantial) while increasing contrast to the point where many times the image becomes unrealistic. This does nothing to make the movie more immersive, just “prettier”

And, of course, as I noted previously somewhere on this thread, Netflix is already involved in such a priority practice –

oh, it's some 3D fanboy in the solo thread. Not even worth it.

Looks like there's yet another Dolby Vision profile currently in existence:

Quote:
As the first game console to adopt Dolby Vision technology, Dolby, in partnership with Microsoft, developed an implementation tailored to game consoles. This leverages the power of Xbox to process and render Dolby Vision content, before sending over to the TV. With the Xbox handling most of the processing, this creates a framework to deliver an optimal Dolby Vision experience for our users.
Read more at https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2018/10/...JTC0Lt6VUKG.99
I was under the impression that they would be using the low latency profile that was developed prior to the Sony devices receiving their Dolby Vision firmware update, but it looks like this is a new one.
