Original one of my all time favorite childhood movies.

Overall relieved that it wasn’t terrible…pretty good movie.

But god, outside of Jennifer Connolly, the supporting characters and actors all sucked. Felt like a modern horror movie remake in that regard. Some of the dialogue was just bad as well. Maverick to Rooster before the final mission, “You got this.”

But it was fun to watch…and in some ways, that was good enough.
This is a new way of describing your racism towards a diverse cast.

The new characters were all great and added a lot to the movie.

The movie wouldn't have worked otherwise.

Yeah, I was surprised by how much I liked the new young characters. They were a lot of fun, and I thought the actors did a great job. Especially Glen Powell, playing a character like Hangman, having to find the right balance of making him cocky but still likable.

And I originally hadn't been that crazy about Miles Teller's casting, but when he first walked into the restaurant I was like, "Okay, yeah, that's definitely the son of Goose."

Some of you have incredibly low standards for acting and dialogue.

Ukraine Maverick, that's who

When Oscar time comes which movie(s) are they gong to talk about for the year 2022?
The Batman or Maverick?

Dr. Strange, Thor, Elvis, ...Nope.
Black Panther part two, Avatar part two?

Last year the Oscars was strange, very.
The next one ... Tom Cruise, that's who.

He's only won the Razzie so far, never the Oscar. Maybe that will change!

Maverick’s gong to be the talk of the town @ the next Oscars.
Cruise doesn't need an Oscar but the film is gong to collect few.
And Cruise is a big part of that flick, very.

* I bet today (day #93) it made $2,000,000 @ home.

Did anyone else who watched it digitally think the dynamic range of the surround mix was a bit lacking?

I think that's been brought up in the thread for the 4k disc, as well.

Ah, I see that now. Sorry. Good to know I'm not alone in thinking that. I watched Maverick back to back with the original and the difference really stood out to me.

Most of the time, I agree with this statement, but the scene where he essentially says to Rooster "Ha Ha! Your Dad's Dead! You shouldn't have any part of this mission!" with a big old shit-eating grin on his face bugs the hell out of me. I get his character is an egomaniacal cocky SOB, but he definitely should have got a punch in the face for that one. I really wanted all the people holding Rooster back to let him go & say "You know what? You're right. He's a prick. Deck him".

As for the rest of the pilots, the first time I watched Maverick, I thought they were all a bit one-note, but then I went back & watched the original again & hey, pretty much all the pilots in that one have exactly the same level of depth (or lack thereof) to their characters too. It's kind of a perfect homage.

I love that Hans Zimmer quotes the Danger Zone theme as Maverick climbs into THAT cockpit near the end. Didn't notice that the first two times.

Details. Matter.
