But...a SEQUEL? Is that what Tom Cruises career has come to? I mean.... really? He cant be broke..can he? Has Scientology ruined him this much?

Wow.
Your description of Top Gun is 100% absolutely CORRECT!! (Although I don't think the word "clichedest" actually exists. But I quibble.) I also wonder what Cruise's career has come to. It seems like a desperate move.

I remember reviews at the time ridiculing the movie as cliched, as well as referring to it as slick propaganda for the Navy.

Because his recent MI4: GP was such a failure (?)

He's certainly had more misses than hits lately, but, "COLLATERAL" was well-received & generally admired/enjoyed by most - same for "MINORITY REPORT". "KNIGHT & DAY" did fairly well, not to mention his Hilarious turn in "TROPIC THUNDER" as Les Grossman. "WAR OF THE WORLDS", another huge hit.

His next movie, the Rock Musical, "ROCK OF AGES", looks really good & I've read "mostly" good advance word on it, but obviously it's too early to tell.

Even thought Knight and Day made a profit after worldwide box-office was taken into account, it was considered one of the worst performers for a Cruise action flick. The film was supposed to have been a huge blockbuster for the studio, and that never happened. Domestic box-office was weak. The film had to make its money back in foreign markets. While Cruise did a great job in Tropic Thunder it wasn't his movie. His time in the film amounted to little more than a cameo.

In addition to Knight and Day, there was also other disappointments like Vanilla Sky and Valkyrie. Then there was also the bad publicity of Cruise being dropped by Paramount Pictures due to Cruise's past erratic behavior. His salary was restructured for the most recent Mission Impossible movie. http://www.vulture.com/2010/08/paramount.html I can see how an actor in his forties, with his longtime working relation with Paramount strained, would become more conservative in his choices of films to make. In that light it seems like a desperate gambit to try and recapture his former glory by repeating the types of films that made him a star. Hence, talk of a sequel to a movie made more than 25 years ago. If he had really wanted to make a sequel to that movie he would have done so years ago.

Jerry Bruckheimer still wants a Top Gun sequel. Tom Cruise has not publicly commented since on whether or not he’d still be onboard “Top Gun 2” without his close friend, I believe without Cruises involvement this project will never get launched off the aircraft carrier.

Just change it up so that it's not a Top Gun sequel and use a different name for the title.

Top Gun’ Sequel will see Tom Cruise grappling with Drone Warfare, Jerry Bruckheimer says.

Quote:
Jerry Bruckheimer is taking one of his biggest hits out of the hanger and adding a modern twist to make it relevant to 21 century moviegoers.

Plans for a sequel to “Top Gun” will have Tom Cruise grappling with a new kind of aerial warfare, one that is more reliant on drones, the veteran producer said during an interview this week with Bloomberg TV's Jon Erlichman.

“Technology has changed, obviously, since we made the first one,” Bruckheimer said. “So I think we're going to take advantage of what the world is like today with the drones really taking over in a lot of our wars.”

That may mean that Cruise's Maverick and his “need for speed” will have to get the old adrenaline fix in fresh ways.

“Is the pilot obsolete?” Bruckheimer asked. “Are those guys, those jet jockeys, are they gone from now? No I don't think so…because you still have to make quick decisions.”

“We're hopefully going to highlight both worlds,” he promised.

Bruckheimer said that drone concept was cooked up by Tony Scott, the director of the first film who committed suicide in 2012.

Most of the time I really hate the idea of making sequels years and most of all decades later but I am actual interested and want to see a sequel to Top Gun.If and when this movie gets made its more the likely going to be released in 2016 to mark the 30th anniversary of the first.

The idea of and older Maverick at the end of his career trying to show these youngster how its done and the need for real pilots and not just drones is and interesting storyline idea.

Justin Marks is feeling the need for speed today as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the screenwriter behind Jon Favreau's upcoming The Jungle Book has landed a job drafting Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions' Top Gun 2.

The Top Gun sequel, a followup to Tony Scott's 1986 hit, has been in the works for some time with Tom Cruise interested in reprising his role as United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. Scott was interested in returning to the director's chair himself prior to his tragic passing.

Marks takes over from Peter Craig, the writer behind Ben Affleck’s The Town, who wrote a previous Top Gun 2 draft.

The only way I'd want to see another "Top Gun" movie is if they stuck with the original's formula, instead of trying to radically reinvent it. Ideally, I'd like to see Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Tom Skerritt, Michael Ironside, and Clarence Gilyard all return for it, plus cameos from Meg Ryan and James Tolkan. It would be great if Kenny Loggins would do a new song for it, and Harold Faltermeyer came back for the score.

Why Clarence Gilyard? He's great in Die Hard but did **** all in the original Top gun. I'd rather have Adrian Pasdar back.

At this point in time, Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan could play DIFFERENT characters in the sequel and no one would notice.

I had to look him up; not familiar with the Chipper character.

That's messed up...seriously. Kelly could grow her hair back out, Val could work with a trainer, and Meg hasn't changed too much.

it's called a Joke, geez.

His point (I think), was nobody's seen her in anything Known for years, almost the same for Val, & Meg hasn't been doing much lately either.

Yeah Kelly could pass for Maverick's mom these days. Not sure where she could fit in the sequel.
