I have to go into my work place today for Active Shooter Training, as it is mandatory. They will have a cop come in and talk to us (feels like I am in elementary school) and then some Q&A. We actually take an online course for this as well. Such is the world we live in now.

Jeez! You're guys are like super geniuses. I could never do anything like that. But then, finances and math are my kryptonite. I can barely use a calculator.

Politics aside, does anyone live in a rural area and use Starlink? My parents live out in bumfuk-nowhere and have been using HughesNet for their internet for years, they haven't had much luck on the data side of things though, all I'll disclose is they've been overpaying for a measly capped 30GB/mo. That doesn't go far when you account for 3 devices using it at once, I'm pretty sure software updates eat that allowance up more than anything as they only do basic stuff online (no gaming, no streaming outside of YouTube, but they do partake in weekly virtual video chats).
I'm wondering if Starlink would be overkill or just as "good" as HughesNET for them. I'm considering the $120/mo residential package for them, it looks like they're running a "deal" where the initial start up cost is waved so long as you commit for a full year. Can anyone tell me what the FAP data blocks are for this plan? Last edited by Mike16; 05-08-2025 at 05:09 PM. |

I watched a streamer travel from Seattle to upper northern Alaska and streamed the entire trip, and the Starlink setup he had performed exceptional well considering the roads through Canada and into Alaska are about as remote as it gets. I dont have first hand knowledge myself but from what I have seen within the streaming realm on twitch, that it is the best option hands down currently for those out in the middle of nowhere.

I would like to know what's going on with A-Ha it says it was update but its a new entry because its a different release. This is the regular release in a standard clear DVD case not the Jewel Cases that they sometimes come in.

Get your parents off HughesNet. So many people left Hughes for Starlink and never looked back. The data caps suck and they throttle you. I was actually a Starlink beta tester and had the service for about 3 years. I rarely ever had an issue with the service. The $120 is a lot but nice that they offer a free kit if you sign up for a year now. I initially had to pay $550 for my dish (dishy) kit. My speeds varied but I never had a 100% clear view of the sky with all my trees. Even with partial obstructions I always had well over 100mb down and never any buffering. I think they have a 30-day trial period as well. It’s pretty awesome to just plug the router in and have internet within 5 minutes. Yeah,…it’s pricey but it was my only option vs. Verizon DSL which gave me a whopping 3mb download speed if I was lucky. *They needed to run fiber for the 911 communications in my area and it just so happened to go through my property line. I was hesitant at first until they told me I’d get cable. Had to sign a right of way but it’s been great. I don’t miss paying $120/month but Starlink definitely served me well over the 3 years I had service. I still have the dish mounted to my deck. They actually offered me a “back-up” 10gb plan for $10/month with full roam access. Essentially, I could take it camping! |
