I saw these movies in the theater. To be continued was on the original theater release.

As did I, and it was one of the most memorable afternoons of my youth and led me into film, but...no 'To Be Continued' title card in the theatrical release:

Just a flying DeLorean to the face and "Back in Time". First film after which I didn't even blink until the lights came up...

Yeah the fist half of part 2 is pretty bad. Part 3 is mediocre throughout.

I swear everybody on these sub-forums has got COVID-19. The lack of taste is astonishing.

Maybe go back and watch the 2015 stuff again. Every line of dialogue is so over the top and cringeworthy

I don't need to go back and watch it again. I've seen the film countless times. It's pretty much part of my DNA at this point.

And over the top doesn't always equal bad.

Meh. I don't try to judge each film when they're so interwoven like Back to the Future, as a whole they're up there with the best cinema has to offer.

The opening sequence with Marty walking around Doc's lab, showing off little tidbits of the plot is some of the best "Show Don't Tell" in popular cinema.

Excuse me while I bouncy bouncy off your post sir. I really hate how people just robotically dismiss 3 for stupid reasons like 3 doesn't have as much time travel. Like how much time travel did 1 have exactly? 1985 to 1955 then 1955 to 1985.

I just don't even bother wasting my breath with people who can't see the massive black hole in that criticism.

Anyway, for me, 2 just doesn't really add anything. It's a fun what if draft script exercise, that really shouldn't have turn out as good as it did. But still, they got away with it, somehow. Yet it can't escape it's own closed loop, where characters, world building ect, don't move an inch. Also the tone gets way to dark I think.

The only problem with 3 is the fact it's just underdeveloped. But all the elements of a true sequel to 1 are present and correct, just not fully fleshed out.

Like the ending is much more 1 in, you know, getting BACK to the future! The same tension is replicated for that great train sequence. But throughout it's build up to that finale, there is atchually real creative direction being employed in expansion on 1s legacy on.

They make usage of the technological limitations of the time period, and throw in the most dangerous incarnation of Biff into the mix, as it keeps building how out of place and vulnerable they are in the wild west setting.

And probably for this reason alone you can say 3 is better. But then there's Docs love story. Doc was a mad crazy scientist in 1, that's fine, 2 was pushing it. They needed to evolve his character, make him more human, with properly understood motivations.

But, as I said though, 3 was underdeveloped. And more the reasons i describe for loving it are the potential it demonstrates. Had it been given a few more months of development, added another 15/20 minutes to the run time. Then I'm pretty confident 3 could have rivalled 1.

Just saying, I liked part 2 way more as a kid. Parts of it have really not aged well for me. Original though is still as great as ever.

Part one will always be the best for me, simply because it builds all the way up until that moment where George pushes that twerp Dixon away from Lorraine and the music swells as he kisses her. Gave me chills the first time I watched it. Seeing history alter forever in the story was pretty powerful. Makes you wanna jump up and clap for him. Similar experience watching E.T. when the cops are chasing the boys on their bikes and E.T. lifts them all into the air as the main theme plays. THAT is how you make movies! Part two will always be cool for the fact it had the Nike Mags, Hover Board and Self Drying Jacket. :-)
Part 3 will always be a fun movie for what it is. Great moments throughout.

I think everybody accepts II and III aren’t as good as the original. However, when considering the first is one of the greatest films ever made, it’s miraculous how damn good the sequels actually are. I’ve always watched and regarded them as a three act trilogy, even though the first is self-contained. Other trilogies can only dream of having that same kind of attachment to all three of its chapters. There’s only a few, but BTTF is absolutely my favourite.

Going back to the original film in Part II and having Marty desperately trying not to mess it up is maybe the most post-modern, meta comment on sequels anyone has ever done.

These two moments absolutely my friend. I get the same feels.
You can add Temple of Doom to that. Snapping out of his poison, telling short round he’s ok with a wink, and then starting to waste the thugees to the Indy theme.

That we can agree on. Admittedly I did like the second one more as a kid. In fact, it was my favourite of the trilogy once upon a time.

The first one is the best by a mile. Then part 2 is just as good in some parts. And part 3 is just a overall fun time of going back to the ole west. Overall this is my favorite trilogy of all time. I own about 3 different versions of this. Now I'm patiently waiting for the announcement of the release date for the 4K UHD. If they have a steelbook I'll probably double dip and get both.

Part 2 might actually be just as good as the first imo, it's very, very close, Part 3 is excellent.

I’ve never understood the obsession with ranking and ordering stuff. Are you guys all on the spectrum? Would it send you all into a tizzy if I said 1 is the weakest & 2 is the best?
