I watched many letterboxed films on my 17" CRT on my computer. Oh yeah, I was the king over the saps with the 15" ones

I still watch many many Criterion Channel streaming movies on my 15-inch laptop, including some in the ultra-wide 2.55:1 ratio. Letterbox is (very obviously) better at any size screen.

I don't see the point in a gloriously butchered huge screen image.

And butchering scene can’t be compared with soundtrack remix. A remix is ADDING stuff (like it or not, that’s the fact), filling the screen is CUTTING OUT the scenes.

But I also agree that original unaltered soundtrack should also be included.

David, with respect: that's complete ****ing nonsense. It makes my brain hurt how so many otherwise knowledgable people say things like this about remixed audio. I'm not saying that remixes don't ADD things, of course they do, but what you do you think is happening to the original effect that was replaced with a new one? By definition it's been CUT OUT. And some stuff is actually just plain missing/drowned out in some audio remixes anyway, including dialogue, music cues and sound effects.

Personally I regard the 5.1 remix for the The Terminator to be the aural equivalent of what Lucas did with the visuals of the Star Wars special editions, it may even be worse because at least SW wasn't a total revision from top to bottom. But on Terminator they replaced the music (leaving out a cue just before the tanker blows up) and effects/foley completely and just retained the dialogue, and not only that but they used sound effects lifted directly from T2 (time displacement lightning, hunter killers) and also the general approach of that soundtrack (pew pew for hand pistols) to make it match with the sequel and I hate it with every fiber of my being. If we do ever get T1 on UHD then if it's only got the remix I won't be buying it, it's one of my favouritest films ever but the remix pisses me off so much I literally can't view the film in that state.

With regards to instances like this I agree. I don't view instances as this a remix, it's a complete re-done. That's why I always want the original mix to be available on the disc purchases.

Same as some people prefer a movie 'remixed' in Atmos sound instead of watching it in its orginal sound as purists would prefer.

People are different and for many this will be a subjective thing. What suits one person, perhaps does not suit another. Personally I think people should watch and enjoy in the way they prefer themselves.

I couldn't care less if somebody else wants to view something in the wrong aspect ratio. It's their loss, not mine.

I don't really see anything wrong in concept with matting for widescreen TVs if you're not losing information and you're still maintaining a pleasing composition in the taller format. I mean, almost no one complains about sound being optimized for the home, like near field audio or changing six track Dolby Stereo to 5.1, so why would you not use the same principal for the picture? They're not selling DCPs or film prints, they're selling home videos that will mostly be watched on televisions instead of gigantic curved projection screens. Should be done on a case by case basis, though.

I don't think remixes of an audio track is quite the same as reformatting the framing of a film, especially if it's being cropped. Unless you're dealing with actually changing the sound of the film, which has happened a few times (Batman, Terminator, Jaws, etc.)

As far as I know, the only person who has framed his films in a way that he likes to release them in scope for theaters and open-matte for home video is Robert Rogriguez, who has done that with a few of his films. Otherwise, that mentality kind of got abandoned once the whole "full-screen" thing disappeared once 16:9 HDTV took over. The only other exception I can think of is James Cameron's Avatar.

I used to prefer filling the screen when the amount cut off on the sides was negligible. Now I prefer black bars since I have burn in on my TV from movies with black bars, which is very distracting when the screen is filled.

We were so poor that we used to sneak over to the neighbor's house and watch movies through their window while eating popcorn our of their trash.
