I've never heard of Ron Cobb, largely because pre-internet and being born in 1974 I wouldn't have paid attention to this stuff. But.. wow. It isn't just that I've watched every movie mentioned in that article it's that I particularly liked all the thing he designed in those movies. In retrospect, I can say he's a huge reason I love practical effects and real sets instead of CGI.

Things still need to be designed, even if they're CG. It's just another tool, and these days you don't notice it because it permeates so many productions now, even mundane television shows.

Those who want to watch this in 4K DV / DA early. iTunes just upgraded my HD to 4K (parts 1 and 2. 3 still showing as HD). $14.99 well spent. Did a quick check and both looks excellent. Part 2 appears less grainier than part 1. Colours now looking natural. A good step up from the previous releases.

As if the disc is going to look radically different.

It's a good indicator of how the disc is going to look like.

That was my first real introduction to the series. I had a poster Toys "R" Us gave away when BTTF3 first came out in 1990 hanging in my bedroom for years, but I never saw the movie.

In the 90s, TBS had cable rights to the first film and USA had Parts II & III. I recorded the latter on one tape and pretty much wore it out until I found Part II at a flea market in 1998. I got Part III for my birthday that year, and watched them endlessly.

All of that seems likes yesterday. God I'm old.
haha, i remember getting that VHS from McDonalds as well, and I was super giddy about it. Ah good times.

Yep, I see the same thing on iTunes as well, but in my case the codes were redeemed from the 30th Anniversary Blu-ray. I’m much more excited about selling the codes that will come with the 4K set! Recoup some costs baby!

Ahh, see my codes were from the 25th Anniversary DVD set. My digital copies are HD, but when I bought the 30th Anniversary Blu-Ray set I gave away those digital codes with the DVD set. So, no changes to my iTunes movie library at this time.

Couldn't resist checking out a bit of the first film via the appleTV app on my 4K Firestick. I mean- free upgrade is a free upgrade so why not?

Skipped around to various parts and can say with confidence that overall it looks very, very nice. Dolby Vision is quite effective here and thankfully grain seems to be intact, albeit clumsily rendered because: streaming compression.

As usual, I'll let others more knowledgeable and/or intimately familiar with the grading on these films render final verdict. Personally though, having had a taste of what's to come, I'm even more excited to view these properly via the UHDs.

Also couldn't resist, especially for 8 bucks. Gonna hold off on the sequels until I have the physical release.

I watched the first 20 minutes or so and everything there looks like it's going to look great once it has an acceptable bitrate, but I couldn't help but notice the scenes where Marty first wanders into Hill Valley in 1955 looked heavily DNR'd to the point of waxyness. I want to believe it's due to streaming compression in cahoots with Australian internet speeds but on both my TV and my iPhone it looks awful. I'm hoping this is an exception and that the transfer is more consistent on the whole, but it does have me worried.

Disc should be pretty nice looking. Colors have definitely been toned back but look much more natural. Also some major signs of that brand new rescan. Took some pictures and Zoomed in. The window blinds in the blu-ray are nasty looking in this picture.

No. I do notice it. I don't consume large amounts of modern TV or movies so CGI stuff stands out when I see it.

It's like seeing hand drawn fake lighting that no one uses any more. I saw it yesterday in an episode of Hart to Hart from 1982 and it looked so odd.

I haven't had a proper watch yet, but sampling both #1 and #2 quickly I didn't notice any obnoxious DNR - though I imagine there'll have been some source clean-up going on. The scans look lovely, and HDR (in DV at least) is just on the right side of obnoxious. I was surprised, though, to see how desaturated the reds are on both films - clearly an artistic decision, and maybe all that red "pop" in the old HD transfers was not the way it was meant to look.

Extremely high bitrate on the iTunes versions, too - 25 Mbps average.

Bulloney.
Watch this VFX reel. There is CG in every shot shown.

Im going to guess the disc will look better due to the larger bitrates.

I’m only seeing part II updated. 1 & III are still the same.
