Update on my Target order. I had chatted with a rep, he canceled my order and reordered with same discount Wednesday, gave me free 2 day shipping. It shipped Thursday and it is already out for deliver today on Friday. : ) it’s for a 4kset and Blu-ray hoverboard set.

What's wrong with Apocalypto, if you don't mind my asking?

If that's not "sky is falling" for you, then why would you even bother?
Actually, it's not "sky is falling" for me either. I ain't gonna burn my set in my backyard. I enjoyed the transfer very much. But this sort of stupid things should be noted and passed along to the studio, so that they won't sit there thinking, huh, good job. Because remember Terence Fletcher: "There are no two words in the English language more harmful than "good job".

As I said in my own write up, I don't think it's a coincidence that it lasts for 10 minutes as that's the length of a reel. Sometimes reels are twice that length, yes, but it changes from film to film as to how they divvied it up.

Personally I think something went wrong with the physical scan of that film reel or the subsequent ingest of that data, Maxwell's letting his imagination run riot with all the film processing talk but why wasn't this artefact there on previous transfers if the actual neg was at fault? Old transfers were done from IP but even so, they were struck from the OG neg directly so would also have contained this chroma bleed.

Nah, it looks very much like a video-centric problem to me. Is it a big enough issue for Universal to fix? I highly doubt that, seeing as most review sites thus far didn't clock it and therefore nor would most people watching it.

PS

To whom it may concern:

The sky isn't falling, I said it myself that the oddness in BTTF's UHD lasts for ~14 minutes out of almost two hours and the good far outweighs the bad. But if things like this happen due to gross negligence or outright incompetence then they need to be called out for it, lest it happen to an entire movie next time.

I've just watched BTTF II 4K UHD and I have noticed something strange. If you watch it in Dolby Vision it's like there is no HDR at all. However if you watch it in HD10 then the HDR is fine and bright.

I'm watching on a LG C9 OLED with a Sony X800 M2.

Anyone else noticed this?

Watched the entire films with no freezes or glitches.

I watched 1 last night and overall I was very impressed across the board. I thought contrast and color saturation looked incredible. And those black levels are superb. Atmos was nice.

I don't know if Sony players actually read the Dolby Vision data on the disc, or if they simply convert the HDR10 layer to Dolby Vision, since it must be manually enabled and outputs everything as Dolby Vision when enabled. Also, their players probably only use their "low latency" version of Dolby Vision. If you have a friend who has a Panasonic, OPPO, Pioneer, LG, or Philips Dolby Vision-enabled player and Dolby Vision-capable display, try playing your disc through their setup.

His words: from 1h14m28s when Marty and Doc are setting up the 'weather experiment' in the square to 1h24m15s when Marty implores Marvin's band to play after he's cut his hand, something happens with the transfer. The colour is essentially defocused and bleeds horizontally, especially reds and blues. It's almost like you're watching smeary analogue video in a way because the colour is so ill-defined.

And indeed. It's absolutely obvious if you look at white surfaces, like a bass drum of the band, or the face of the clock.

The outer box is a bit odd with not having any open sides, have to unfold it either top/bottom to get it out. Thankfully they went with standard cases for the release here.

Watched the first film tonight and glad to finally see a release without that ugly DNR/sharpened look the last BD release had, so I can finally retire the DCP/HDTV rips.
So interesting they went with the steelbook artwork, even with the back covers as well. Never seen an amaray case without typical description copy on the back cover. Plus the Aus set doesn’t get an insert rundown of each film like the US and UK sets.

Great thing about this is you could print custom covers for each film (like the covers The Edge commissioned Nissen to make) and have the traditional movie posters as the covers.

I think you might be right, as I just tried another DV disc and I get the same problem.

How does it get manually enabled?
I have a Sony player... And it says it has Dolby Vision.

You have to go into settings and turn on "Dolby Vision Output". There is no "Auto" option. Once on, it will convert everything to Dolby Vision. All the other players do this automatically when a Dolby Vision (or HDR10+) disc is inserted. Also, Sony Pictures has almost never encoded any of their discs in Dolby Vision, only in the basic HDR10.

Still doesn't explain why Batman2 is saying it's dull.
Probably the TV's DV settings want looking at.
Of course Sony players read the DV data (if present) and not just convert the HDR10, but as you said it will convert a HDR10 only disc if DV is set to on.

With my Sony setup if you turn on DV at the player and play an HDR10 disc the player says "HDR" but the TV still goes into DV mode, if you play a DV disc the player says "Dolby Vision"

So I think the player is reading the disc correctly but once you turn DV on the TV goes into DV mode

Carlito's Way is going to be released in 4K? I had no idea about that.
