Bestbuy got it and shipped it to me and i had to exchange it because it was so bad the steelbook was mint though, so i got 2 digital out of it . Prob company who made the disc fault pressed the discs without looking at them.

More often than not, it's just poor handling at the factory/packaging stage. It's not only marks and scratches. I check every single disc I ever get under a spotlight on the day they arrive and a fair few have actual fingerprint smudges on the data side that I clean off. Says a lot about the f***heads handling them.

Still, it's better than it used to be. Remember back in the DVD/CD days, UK retailers like WH Smiths/Woolworths used to keep the actual discs in grotty draws behind the counter and you've have to take the empty case up to buy it. They'd then proceed to rifle through the draw, find the disc, carelessly pull it out of some infinitely re-used sleeve or plastic by grabbing it on both sides and then mash it into the disc holder. The horror.... Gawd, bless sealed products from the t'internet, I says.

It was the dreaded smearing and trails left in the shadow details (even when stepping frame-by-frame) that caught me off.
I have an x700 player as well and it has two distinct sets of configuration settings. On video playback, you can press "Options" on the remote and go to AV settings (or Video Settings, I forget the exact terminology). I set this to "Direct," which I believe is source direct to remove player processing.

There is also a player menu proper that you can access by pressing "Home" on the remote. Go into AV or Video settings again and turn off the junk. The one thing I leave on Auto/On is "Deep Color Mode," because I'm not sure what that is, but all the other processing I turn off.

In this way, I leave it to my Sony 900F to do the heavy lifting.

BTTF is a top five movie for me. I can't watch it enough.

I've seen 2 & 3 once each - and that was too much.

I say that to say this - I thought the iTunes copy of the first movie looks pretty good. Is the 4k disc significantly better to the point it's worth buying the whole set knowing full well I'm likely never taking 2 & 3 out of the case?

Bingo. That instruction should be printed out and stapled to the front of every manual for a Sony UHD player and should also be stickied to every such Sony UHD player thread.

I just can't understand the hate for the sequels, this one one of the best trilogies out there. It would be cool if the 100GB disc was large enough to fit Part 2 and 3 together as one seamless film.

Part 3 easily had the best PQ and AQ of the bunch. The colors just leap off the screen, and the detail is staggering at times. I rewatched one of the special feature segments right after that uses footage from old BD and you can easily see the monumental difference. The score really shines with the Atmos remix.

If this is as good as it gets for this series I am happy.

I used PayPal as payment. I can always fight with them if need be if my order never ships out or they won't let me cancel or refund me. I'm hoping in the next few weeks.

This is good to know. I have the x700 and never knew this. Is it something that needs doing with every disc you watch or once it's fibre you can forget it?

It doesn't seem to affect actual 4K UHD content but any regular Blu-Ray or DVD you've watched on the x700 thus far will have had some automatic noise reduction applied if the Options -> Video Settings is not set to Direct. Once it's set, then you can forget.

Received my order from Amazon.com yesterday. Was the disc sleeve packaging. NONE of the discs had any scratches whatsoever. It's only temporary since I'll be migrating those same discs to multi-disc 4K Viva cases and utilising Nissen's retro VHS coverarts. Haven't watched any but will in the next few days. It's all three in one go or none when I usually watch this Trilogy.

They are not fine. They are scratched and look like you bought a used set for full price. You shouldn't be OK with that. These cardboard sleeves need to go. Why do they do they only push that crap on the Americans? The sets in other countries are normal and functional.

These sets in the U.S. are plenty functional. And in fact, they function just well thank you very much.

As sad as it is, It seems that too big of a majority are "OK" with this sort of thing to the point that none of the manufacturers, retailers, or shipping handlers give a sh*t anymore. Even complaining to Amazon or whomever else doesn't do much. they will usually send out a replacement but no one you speak to over the phone is paid enough to really care unfortunately.

Personally, I'm right there with you though. If I'm paying a buck or 2 for something used at a thrift store or garage sale then yeah I can probably overlook a bit of wear and a few blemishes but if I'm paying $60+ for what is supposed to be a brand new factory sealed product then damaged packaging and scratched discs are absolutely unacceptable to me. I refuse to pay good money for something that already looks like it was mishandled by careless owners for 10 years.

I got this set in the mail last Friday ans none of the discs appear to be scratched but I absolutely hate this packaging style. I do not understand why studios continue to package their products in this crap.
